[nfc-l] My goodness

2012-09-27 Thread Benjamin Van Doren
All -

Just spent 1.5+ hours listening to flight calls. Radar showed very dense
movement (some returns over 35 dBZ!), local conditions low cloud ceiling with a
light misty rain. Calling rates approaching 60 calls/min (~50 counted in one
timed minute, but varied). Lots and lots of Gray-cheeked Thrush, several per
minute. Definitely in the hundreds of calls--never heard this many before! 5-7x
as many Swainson's Thrush as a rough guess, plus assorted warblers and
sparrows.

I was listening in a field/parking lot on the Cornell campus. Can only imagine
what it was like at Mt Pleasant or other better spots.

[cayugabirds-l] siskins now - great egret night flight calls tonight - DDT then & now

2012-09-27 Thread Bill Evans
Greetings birders:

Right now there are a few siskins feeding in cedar trees on Green St. adjacent
to Agway.

The timing and conditions look good for hearing great egret night flight calls
tonight. My past experience suggests that 8:30-10PM is the window to hear
egrets, presumably individuals originating from the southern Lake Ontario
marshes. I’m unable to go up to Mt Pleasant tonight for a listen but perhaps
others can – should be a great night for listening with lots of migrants aloft!

Today is the 50th anniversary of the publication of Rachael Carson’s Silent
Spring. For a reflective read, check out the article Insecticides and Birds,
which was presented orally to the National Audubon Society in November 1958,
later published in Audubon Magazine (Jan-Feb 1959), and reprinted in the WI
Ornithological Society’s Journal: The Passenger Pigeon (linked article). The
article details how a serendipitous American Robin study on the University of
Michigan campus in Lansing, MI documented the decimation of the local breeding
American Robin population due to spraying of DDT over the campus to treat Dutch
Elm Disease.

For an excellent recent reflection on DDT, Rachel Carson, and our modern toxic
stew, see Paul Ehrlich’s piece linked below:

[cayugabirds-l] lunch hour migrants (+Common Tern)

2012-09-27 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
I enjoyed a late lunch hour on my back deck (1-2 PM) today -- birds were
definitely moving on the north winds. I saw at least 6 high-streaming
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS (I'm sure I missed many), plus a migrating AM KESTREL, a low
imm. BALD EAGLE, and a very high "v" of 30 CANADA GEESE. Anyone at Mount
Pleasant today?? Also in the yard were 2 WINTER WRENS, 2 YELLOW-RUMPED and 1
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER.

Yesterday morning, an imm. COMMON TERN was flying around and landed on the red
lighthouse jetty off Stewart Park -- sorry for this late post.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Gallinule at Hog Hole

2012-09-27 Thread Tim Lenz
Hi all,

Apologies for the late post. I enjoyed a splendid morning of birding at Hog
Hole, highlighted by an immature COMMON GALLINULE in the channel below Rt.
89. Because of the flocks of sparrows, kinglets, and warblers along the way
it took me an hour just to reach the north shoreline. Full checklist with
photos is here:

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Hummer in Mecklenberg

2012-09-27 Thread David McCartt
As of yesterday morning we had a female coming to our feeder too.  I think our
breeders  departed on 9/12 but beginning again on 9/23 we've had one daily,
with the exception of today (could have just missed seeing it this AM).  I
suspect this latest bird is a migrant that has chosen to stop and refuel for
awhile.  It is a noticeably chunkier looking than the birds seen earlier this
month. Don't know if it is fluffed up due to the temperatures or if it has
added fat in preparation for migration.

Just one more sighting to add to all the others.  I’ve been hearing from a
woman in Mecklenberg who still has a young male Ruby-throat coming regularly to
her feeder and she’s got the photos to prove it.

[cayugabirds-l] FW: eBird Report - Wise Acres, Sep 27, 2012

2012-09-27 Thread Nancy W Dickinson
I had a wonderful walk around our hillside this morning with my dog, and found
many birds (with many more hiding and whispering in the leaves). I was
especially excited by a clear view of a Swainson's Thrush, because just a week
ago I studied my first one, on Monhegan Island with Jeff Wells and the Audubon
camp! It was also interesting to have both young Purple Finch and RB Grosbeak
near each other for comparison. My eBird list follows.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods, N Feeder area Hopping this am

2012-09-27 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all,
I'm lucky enough to have a direct view from my office on the north feeders and
the edge of the woods at the Lab of Ornithology. This morning, from my office
between 9 and 9:45 am (and still going), I've had great looks at:
Wilson's Warbler (nice male with dark black cap)
Yellow rumped Warbler
Magnolia Warbler
Blue headed Vireo
Phoebe
White Throated Sparrow
Song Sparrow (LOTS of these around)
Chipping Sparrow
Cardinals
Grackles
Red-winged Blackbirds
Mourning Dove
Titmouse
Chickadee
White breasted Nuthatch
Red breasted Nuthatch
House Finch
Goldfinch
Cedar Waxwings

And things still keep popping up. Mary Winston at the front emailed that a
Grey-cheeked Thrush just hit the window of the observatory.

Nice morning!
