Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Basin Highlights of 2012
Compared to Chris I am barely a birder, and considering the amount of time spent birding in 2012, I am even less of one. However, on May 8, at our feeders we had a Blue Grosbeak. Carmen Hockett spotted it first and she knew it was different. I was so consumed with eyeballing it that the camera, at hand, stayed unused. Others came to see it (Stu Kraznoff, Jay McGowan friends) but it had already fled. I was so accustomed to errant reports of Blue Grosbeak attributed to mis-sightings of Indigo Bunting, that my failure to take a photo is even more embarrassing. However, the large ruffous-brown wing bars, large silvery bill, and a size almost at large as the Rose-breasted Grosbeak at the same feeder, were clearly the field marks of the BLGR. There is no doubt that my life's most unusual sighting was indeed a Blue Grosbeak, which happened right at our home feeders. asher -Never play it the same way once. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
RE: [cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Basin Highlights of 2012
The best bird of 2012 for me was not the most beautiful (Painted Bunting, Florida) or most longed-for bird (Burrowing Owl, also Florida). It was the one that made itself available for close and repeated observations: the Eastern Screech-owl. During the summer, we hosted a family of 2 parents and 3 fledglings which hunted right outside our window for weeks- amazing! The first bird I saw on my birthday? A screech-owl. What bird kept me company while my fiancé was away for many weeks of Sandy relief? A screech-owl. There surely can be no doubt that 2012 was, for me, the Year of the Screech-owl, and it didn't even require any travel. A close second was seeing the Osprey return to and successfully nest at their restored home on Portland Point Road. It was great to see them back and raising a family after their former nest burned down. The best birds always have stories around them, don't they? May 2013 be full of stories for us all. [cayugabirds-l] Cooper's H.
About 11:40 this a.m., an adult Cooper's Hawk flew into our back yard and perched on the lower rail of our fence. Three crows (our resident family, less one) were in attendance without the showy dramatics they go thru with Red-Tails. The crows sort of stalked around and got closer and closer to Mr. Cooper. He flew into a juniper next to the fence. One crow peered into the bush and the hawk flew to a low branch in an ash nearby. He sat for a while so Shirley and I could confirm his lineage (definitely not a Sharpie), then flew out of sight towards the front of the house. This is the first accipiter that we have seen in the yard this winter, so he was actually welcome, especially since he left our yard residents alone. [cayugabirds-l] Cardinal singing
As I stepped out of the house this afternoon, I heard a cardinal belt out a few notes. The bird apparently thought better about its timing and promptly ceased singing. Anytime I hear birds singing during the winter, I keep praying that this might be a reliable harbinger of better weather to come. I'm not holding my breath, though! Larry -- W. [cayugabirds-l] Screech-Owls
It may be a good evening to listen for screech-owls. Jeff Gerbracht mentioned his was calling. We have one vocalizing spontaneously here at Monkey Run too. [cayugabirds-l] Hoary Redpoll
Hi All, Sorry for the late post. The Hoary Redpoll I saw was on Lake Como Road (in Summer Hill) at Nick's place. Sorry I don't know the exact address. I actually stayed on Lake Como Road even though his home is on the lake. There was a cleared off area, so... I grabbed my scope and watched from above. There were 3 or so feeders I could see, and Redpolls came in by the numbers. The Hoary was distinctive to me because there were hardly any strips on the sides. It did have a reddish breast, so it wasn't totally frosty. The face was a little more squished in than the other Redpolls. Three or so years back, Chris Wood and Jeff Gerbrecht helped me ID them. Good Birding, Ann ps While I was there I heard a bird call 3 times. I had no idea what it was and I couldn't find it. I am pretty good with bird songs, but I did't recognize that sound. If you go there, please pay attention to it. Thanks. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
