[cayugabirds-l] redpolls

2013-02-07 Thread Ray Zimmerman
I know I'm late to the party, but we FINALLY had our first flock of about 25
REDPOLLS drop in at our feeder in Eastern Heights this morning, if only for a
few seconds.

[cayugabirds-l] Fw: Tufted Duck, Oswego Harbor

2013-02-07 Thread Jay McGowan
*Subject: Tufted Duck*
Date: Thu Feb 7 2013 11:27 am
From: wpurcell AT twcny.rr.com

Just got a call from Andrew Van Norstrand and he described a bird that
sounds spot on for female Tufted Duck in Oswego. He was viewing the
bird from the bluff above Wright's Landing on the west side of the
river.

Also, Wayne Fidler posted some photos of a bird that looks good for a
Redhead x Ring-necked hybrid from the same area, so anyone looking for the
Tufted should keep and eye out for that bird and try to get more photos.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings/Horned Larks

2013-02-07 Thread Marie P Read
Up on the hill for my exercise walk this morning between 10:45 and 11:45, I saw
a flock of 20-ish Snow Buntings at the eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd. And at
three different spots between there and the observatory I found individual
Horned Larks, most likely the vanguard of those that typically show up in
mid-February to take possession of small patches of open ground and start their
flight songs on high, gearing up for breeding. I have a feeling that, come
tomorrow, they may regret their decision to get here early!

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club meeting - Monday, February 11

2013-02-07 Thread cl...@juno.com

The Cayuga Bird Club will hold its monthly meeting next Monday, February 11, at
7:30 at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, with cookies and conversation at 7:15.

Irby Lovette, Associate Professor in the Dept. of Ecology Evolutionary
Biology and Director of the Fuller Evolutionary Biology Program at the Cornell
Lab of Ornithology, will present
'Jays of our Lives' meets 'As the World Terns': The Soap Operas of Avian
Mating Behavior in the Wild. Birds have long served as metaphors for human
romance. In this Valentine’s week talk, Irby will discuss the complicated plot
twists of birds’ social lives.

The Club will also be hosting Irby Lovett for dinner at Taste of Thai Express
at 5:30 pm prior to the meeting. This is a great opportunity for members to
meet with Irby and others while enjoying some great food. If you would like to
join us for dinner, please RSVP to cl...@juno.com by Sunday evening so that
reservations can be made.

Good birding this weekend! Hope to see you Monday!
