RE: [cayugabirds-l] Shrike in Danby and at Goetchius

2013-02-13 Thread John Confer

I presume the same shrike, still at Goetchius on 12 Feb. in tree top near
parking/bridge area. It is not always readily seen. I see it near the road on
my commute route about 1 out of 6 trips by the Preserve and about 1 out of 3
times I walk around in the Preserve. There have been two Rough-legged Hawks
occasionally at the Preserve, one light phase and one dark phase, but not
recently seen and definitely absent more than present. Lots of rodent trails in
the snow.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Shrike in Danby

Late this afternoon I saw a N. Shrike sitting in a small tree next to the bird
feeders. What a surprise. A few larger birds didn’t seem to be bothered by
its presence but there weren’t any little birds to be seen.

[cayugabirds-l] NORTHERN SHRIKE

2013-02-13 Thread Jill Vaughan
Seen at 3:30 this afternoon at the end of Cayuga Vista Drive where there
will be a new development - I walked the lane (cannot drive in there). The
NORTHERN SHRIKE flew in front of me, then landed in the field. I got some
fine views as it stayed still a few moments, then moved about in the dry
grass before it took off again, flying low into the hedgerow.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-shouldered Hawk near Brooktondale

2013-02-13 Thread bilbaker
Around 4 PM on my way home from town I was stuck behind school bus traffic
on Brooktondale Rd. about a 1/2 mile from Rt79. As I was waiting a fairly
large hawk flew across the road towards Six Mile Creek. My initial reaction
had been Coopers, but the tail was very dark with narrow white bands. It
landed long enough on the near side of the creek for me to get a decent
look through binoculars, and it was indeed a Red-Shouldered. It flew
across the creek and I lost it. As I was getting into my car it started
calling, a loud kee yur repeated several times, but I wasn't able to
re-find it visually.

[cayugabirds-l] Frontenac Island/Union Springs

2013-02-13 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Today Steve & Susie Fast, my daughter Becky & I saw 4 bald eagles in the trees
of Frontenac Island. Also saw some swans & vast numbers of ducks: redheads,
canvas backs, scaup, gadwall, mallard, buffles, common mergs, Canadas, etc..
Beautiful sunshine & a mild (?) day in which to observe.

Beaver has downed another tree along Factory St. pond where Becky & I had good
looks at a kingfisher.

Hopefully Steve & Susie will give a full report of their jaunt around the lake.
C'mon Steve, your scope is better than mine!

[cayugabirds-l] Jaunt up the lake

2013-02-13 Thread Susan Fast
Susie & I jaunted up the east side of Cayuga Lake and back today. We had a
good visit with Fritzie and Becky in Union Springs where a large raft of
mostly Aythya was close in. No ice to speak of. Fritzie seems to think that
I have a larger scope and can therefore see more. It's not the scope but
the eyeball looking through it that's important. For example, an early stop
for Susie & I was the Aurora boathouse. I found 9 grebes, and although way
out, felt sure they were all HORNED GREBES. A flicker (not the bird) of
doubt remained, so we stopped at the boathouse again on our way south later.
Because of sun angle, I could see only silhouettes, but this time one EARED
GREBE stood out clearly from 8 HORNED GREBES. One of the horned grebes
twice lunged aggressively at the eared to keep it away from the group. This
was new to me as previous observations over the years led me to believe they
all got along peacefully.

Another interesting encounter occurred at the Potato Bldg. in the Montezuma
Mucklands. The area was devoid of birds except for a small flock of
STARLINGS flitting about. As we got ready to leave, we noticed two large
birds flying towards us from the NW. They were the pair of adult BALD
EAGLES from the nest in the hedgerow in that direction. Right over the
building, they began to soar together in tight circles. They made 12-14
revolutions usually with an eagle on opposite sides of the circle. The
circle diameter varied somewhat, but was about 50'. This is supposedly
courtship behavior. We both heard one series of chittering sounds, but this
could have come from the starlings, which were imitating other bird songs.
Interestingly to me was that both birds, in their gyrations, held the wings
flat out in normal soaring position about 50% of the time. In the other
50%, the wings were held in an exaggerated dihedral, almost like the angle
one would see with turkey vultures. We're wondering if this dihedral
position has some aerodynamic function related to the tight circling, or if
it is another aspect of courtship behavior?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] NO. SHRIKE

2013-02-13 Thread nutter.dave
When I first read the subject line, I thought it was reporting the absence of a shrike: no shrike. Then I realized that it was an abbreviation for Northern Shrike. I often think it's worth the small extra effort to write the whole name of any bird in order to be clear, and I celebrate the very long names. I guess I'm on the compulsive end of the spectrum that way, maybe because I imagine so many ways to misinterpret other people (and I succeed quite a bit).I am not writing simply out of amusement or to harass Donna, I am also belatedly (for which everyone is welcome to ridicule me) reporting that I saw presumably the same bird, a Northern Shrike, atop a sapling beyond a brushy area north of Snyder Road and the airport on Sunday afternoon, 10 February. Of course I wonder if this is the same bird I found due east of the end of Cherry Road, a slightly different vantage into the same expanse of habitat, back on 4 January.--Dave NutterOn Feb 13, 2013, at 11:53 AM, Donna Scott wrote:in Hedgerow and on barbed wire of chain-link fence north east of Airport (Seen from Snyder Rd. 2013-02-13 Thread nutter.dave
About 11:30am I got a phone call from Melissa Groo, who had gone to Stewart Park in search of the Peregrine. If she doesn't post to the list by tomorrow morning what she told me she saw and photographed, I will do so. For the moment I will just say that Stewart Park is pretty special. --Dave NutterOn Feb 13, 2013, at 07:31 AM, 6072292...@vtext.com wrote:PEREGRINE FALCON on snag by swan pond, Stewart Park. --Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html'>http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
