[cayugabirds-l] Cool cardinal courtship behavior

2013-03-15 Thread Marie P Read
This morning in Sapsucker Woods I observed some fascinating Northern Cardinal
courtship. Listening to the male sing, I was struck by how long the trills
were at the end of his song phrases. He was obviously hot, hot, hot!!! Suddenly
he flew down parachuting his wings to where the female cardinal crouched,
fluttering her wings in an obvious solicitation pose. Approaching her closely,
the male stood up tall with his crest high and began swaying to and fro in
front of her. This went on for quite a few seconds, then the pair flew off
together. I always feel blessed when I see intimate moments such as this
between birds!

[cayugabirds-l] Lesser Black-backed invasion and other gulls

2013-03-15 Thread Jay McGowan
As you may have noticed from recent posts, we are in the midst of what by
Cayuga Lake standards amounts to an invasion of LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
The day of the white-fronted goose, several observers had 7-9 Lessers at
Stewart Park (mostly adults), Brad Walker found five at Bluegrass Lane a
couple days ago, and numbers have been increasing at the compost this week,
with 12 yesterday morning, and 17 this morning (I'd say we typically see
between 3 and 8 different birds in a typical winter). I've also been seeing
a complete range of plumages, from bright, white-headed adults with shining
yellow legs to juvenile birds, and everything in between. I have tried to
photograph as many as I could this week and will try to post some
comparison shots soon. I am very interested in how many birds may actually
be in the area right now.

Other gulls are around as well. A juvenile GLAUCOUS GULL made an appearance
at Stewart Park last weekend, but to my knowledge has not been seen
again--let us know if you see it, they have been scarce this season. At
least four ICELAND GULLS are around as well, a small, dark-gray wingtipped
2nd cycle, a fairly pale, advanced 2nd cycle (with noticeably gray back and
bicolored bill), a typically pale 1st cycle, and a nice adult, with gray in
the wingtips and a bit of pale streaking on the nape. The 1st cycle and the
adult were at the compost this morning.

Finally, I saw for the first time today what I took to be a HERRING x
BLACK-BACKED GULL HYBRID. This bird was quite similar to the surrounding
Herring Gulls in size and structure, but with a noticeable dark mantle that
was still much paler than the Lesser Black-backed Gulls. The legs were
pinkish. Birds that I have called Herring x Great Black-backed have been
larger than this one was, but this seems on the large end of Herring x
Lesser, so I'm not positive on that. The photos make the mantle look a
little darker than it appeared in life, but the pinkish legs, white
mirrors, and blocky head pretty much rule out a pure Lesser.

https://picasaweb.google.com/37855303614931880/LateWinter2013#5855621166613291154

As I mentioned above, I'm interested in tracking the Lesser Black-backed
and other gulls, so try to get a picture if you see one!

Cheers,
-Jay

[cayugabirds-l] Short eared owl

2013-03-15 Thread Donna Scott
1 SHORT EARED OWL well after sunset on Carncross Rd., near the berm and the new
bridge to Howland Island.

After viewing the 100s of thousands of SNOW GEESE at Cayuga Lake State Park,
after my sister left to return to Fairport, I drove north to Carncross Rd. to
see if I could find a Short Eared Owl. (BTW, many 1000s of Snow geese left the
lake and flew sort of NW by 5 PM yesterday; the numbers on the water seemed
less than 3 hours earlier).

It got very cold walking on Carncross Rd. and some of the gusts of wind out of
the west were so strong I almost got blown off the berm near the new bridge.
Also, a couple huge farm dump trucks appeared to be taking soil into Howland
Island. They stirred up a lot of dust.

After walks up and down the road, I had to keep getting back in the car to warm
up and wolf down my supper, while keeping an eye peeled for an owl.

I was finally rewarded well after sunset, when a Short Eared Owl appeared right
near my car over the field to the north of the road (field has tamped down
grass and reeds, not cornstalks).
It flew and hovered, back and forth over the field, while I leaned over the
passenger seat with my binocs looking out the open window. It was sihouetted
against the sky that still had enough light to see its colors. Beautiful!
After 2-3 minutes of watching the owl, I got out of the car as quietly as I
could, but a vehicle went by just then, and I did not see the owl after that.

What a great day of birding!

[cayugabirds-l] Comet watching & geese

2013-03-15 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Last evening, 3.14.13, watching westward for the comet from my LR window I
suddenly saw tremendous flocks of SNOW GEESE heading north over the lake + more
over the west shore. I immediately thought of Donna Scott's post earlier in the
day about 100s of thousands of Snows on the lake down her way.

This is my 21st winter in Union Springs. NEVER have I seen migration flights
such as I watched for over 1/2 hr. last night. There was no break in the
flocks. Tens of thousands. Even in the fading light, with binox, I could see
them to the south, north & west.

Becky said she could see flocks from her house which is 3 mi. east of us. I
didn't go look that way. Only in the last 10 min. did I see what I could say
were only Canadas & some of those appeared to be dropping to the lake. Bill
Hecht should have a lot out from his house this a.m.. Surely this was the LAST
big show! I thought that last wk., too. Nature is filled with surprises.

In all the excitement I did get to see the comet!! Geese were far more
exciting. Habbagudday, everybody.
