[cayugabirds-l] RFI: locations of nesting birds for upcoming photo book project

2013-04-30 Thread Marie P. Read
HI everyone,

Spring is happening and a number of local birds are already nesting. I'm hoping
to enlist your help in finding some nests that I can photograph for my upcoming
book about nesting behavior (co-authored with Laura Erickson and slated for
publication Fall 2014).

Here's what I need:

Black-capped Chickadee nest in nestbox (openable so I can photograph the eggs)
WHite-breasted Nuthatch " "
House Wren"
  "
Northern Cardinal nest
Killdeer nest
Yellow Warbler (a bit early for them yet, I know...)

For all the above, be assured I just need quick shots of the nest and eggs, and
possibly to return later for more quick shots of the nestlings.
And of course I'd be interested in any other possible photo ops you'd share...

Many thanks for all leads.

Marie

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods Migrants

2013-04-30 Thread Brad Walker
Hi all,

There were some new arrivals at Sapsucker Woods this morning, the most
notable being: OVENBIRD singing along the west side of Sapsucker Woods
Road, a BLUE-HEADED VIREO singing in the same location, GRAY CATBIRD on the
Wilson Trail North, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT singing along the powerline cut
near the Fuller Wetlands, YELLOW WARBLER near the eastern powerline cut,
several singing EASTERN TOWHEES and HOUSE WRENS, and , although not a new
arrival, I heard the winnowing of a WILSON'S SNIPE near the entrance to the
Visitor's Lot.

[cayugabirds-l] Tuesday birds

2013-04-30 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
I had my first yard Black-throated Green Warbler this morning, very exciting.
Stewart Park is loaded with Yellow-rumped ,Yellow and Palm Warblers this
morning. I was also able to finally find a Green Heron by the carp pool. I
heard one Warbling Vireo but no others.
Happy birding

[cayugabirds-l] White-throated Sparrows

2013-04-30 Thread bilbaker
While we've had a single White-throated Sparrow around for at least 2
weeks, today all of a sudden we have at least 6. I kept looking for
White-crowned but no luck so far.

Other yard birds include 8+ Purple Finches, an Eastern Towhee singing
throughout the day it seems, a Red-breasted Nuthatch that appeared 2 days
ago, finally Tree Swallows up at our nest boxes and the usual coterie of
resident birds all giving us a nice morning chorus.

[cayugabirds-l] Pics of the screechie

2013-04-30 Thread Chris R. Pelkie
A couple people asked, so I put a couple images on Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/73284351@N03/8696531183/in/set-72157633375403153/

I misspoke about my owl house design: the hinges are above (not below) the
hole, but the idea of hinging at top front rather than at bottom or hinging the
roof is the basic change from some designs I found.

Kaufmann's (Audubon) is here:
http://archive.audubonmagazine.org/backyard/backyard0201.html
This was my main guide for cutting and sizes.

[cayugabirds-l] evening thrasher

2013-04-30 Thread James Gaffney
I took an evening walk out back and profited from my bird song disks by
hearing a brown thrasher and locating it vociferously repeating over the
horse/deer field at the corner of Ellis Hollow Creek road and Turkey Hill
road. It repeated numerous phrases 2 to 3 times each. I also thought maybe
I heard a great crested flycatchers "Wheep" but it was the call note of a
male towhee instead of it's much more familiar song it.

[cayugabirds-l] Prairie warblers off Hunt Hill Rd and Hunt Grove Pl.?

2013-04-30 Thread Anne Clark
I COULD be mistaken as always--I don't trust my audio-identifications--
but am pretty sure it was two Prairie Warblers singing (loudly) on or
near Hunt Grove, the dead end just off Hunt Hill Rd off Ellis Hollow Rd.
Nice scales over and over. Doesn't seem like a prairie warbler
habitat, although there is open field S of Hunt Hill there.

Jon Weeks just reported one, his first, in Broome today.
