[cayugabirds-l] May's Point (MNWR), Sun 7/26 -- Red-headed Woodpeckers still present

2013-07-29 Thread Mark Chao
Tilden suggested that our family take a short detour on our return from
Buffalo on Sunday to allow his sister and especially his mom to see the
Red-headed Woodpeckers along South May's Point Road in Montezuma NWR. We
found both birds easily at around 4 PM in the stand of dead trees on the
west side of the road.

[cayugabirds-l] This past week-end notes

2013-07-29 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

It has been an incredible week with lots of new things to be found in our area.

Yesterday, I was supposed to be having picnic in Myers from 12.30 Pm to 4.30
Pm, but we cancelled it due to rain or otherwise I am sure to have seen the
good birds. But anyways, I did go to see the Red Knots and other shore bird
later in the evening. As soon as I got off the car, I saw lots of people with
scopes so decided I will not take my scope. Sure enough as soon a Jay saw me he
lowered his scope to my height and focused it on the bird and waited for my
arrival! Thanks Jay for sharing the scope and the bird! We got some nice videos
of the Red Know and I will post it later.

This past week-end also was a national moth week, we saw many interesting
moths, including several beautiful species, which were new to me!

Also saw my first Common Buckeye, first report of it in the region and monarchs
of the season on Saturday afternoon.

Yesterday afternoon I went in search of Primrose Moths as everyone else I spoke
to told me they see it in all Evening Primroses. Past year I had seen lots of
primroses along the lake shore near Children's garden so I went in search of
them. I found a few primroses but no moths or caterpillars! But instead I found
some Tompkins county records for odonates. I found a female Enallgma traviatum
Slender Bluet and also a male Blue-fronted Dancer Argia apicalis!

So it goes!

Cheers

[cayugabirds-l] Life member Karen Allaben-Confer - RTPI show

2013-07-29 Thread John Confer
Karen Allaben-Confer, life member of the Cayuga Bird Club, has a
retrospective art show at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural
History http://www.rtpi.org/ in Jamestown, NY. The show runs from August
9 to October 29 with the opening from 5:00 to 7:00 Friday, August 9.
Karen's work was selected as the poster piece for a show that toured in
Japan out of ~1000 juried submissions. She has been described as "among
the great wildlife artists of our time" (Bill Roberts, Emeritus
Professor of Art, Wells College) and as "among the world's finest
wildlife artists" (Alan Singer, Professor of Art RIT).

Over 50 pieces of Karen's works are on display with many from local
collectors including Ton and Laura Schat, Peter and Mary Lou Harriet,
Paul and Linda McBride, and Randy Wayne. The show spans 35 years of
creative effort and depicts the changing style from evocative acrylic to
more recent, delicate graphite and pastel. Images feature Pileated
Woodpeckers, Peregrine Falcons, and seabirds including Atlantic Puffin,
Common Tern, and the Great Auk.
The show features many of Karen's finest works, that
are unlikely to be assembled for display again.

I hope this personal note will not appear to violate the listserve norms
of use. JLC

Re: [cayugabirds-l] American White Pelican continues at Knox-Marsellus, East Rd, Tyre

2013-07-29 Thread Mickey Scilingo
Dave,

I was at Knox Marsellus marsh briefly on Saturday morning and I watched the
pelican feed while it was swimming across the shallow pool. It would lower its
head almost completely underwater while slowly swimming forward. After a few
seconds, it would raise its head up and swallow whatever was unfortunate enough
to be in its path. It did this multiple times and at one point swallowed on 9
consecutive attempts. I wondered what it was eating, but I could never really
see what it was picking up.

[cayugabirds-l] RFI: House Wrens or Black-capped CHickadees still nesting?

2013-07-29 Thread Marie P. Read
HI everyone,

I'm finishing up my nesting birds book project and still have a couple of gaps
for which I need some photo coverage. It's getting a little late, I know, but
does anyone have or know of active nests of House Wren or Black-capped
Chickadee, nest box or natural cavity. Looking to get images of big youngsters
looking out to be fed (nest exterior) and possibly some interior shots just of
smaller nestlings. Also, Eastern Phoebe?

Thanks all.

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma NWR (Benning Marsh) - Duck ID ?

2013-07-29 Thread Jason Huck
Hello all,

Fledging birder here looking for some expert identification support. Sorry for
the late post; I just uploaded the video clip this morning.

On Saturday, July 27th around 11:20am, at Benning Marsh (on Wildlife Drive) at
MNWR, as I studied my shorebirds (from a bit closer than Knox-Marcellus), I
sighted an "odd" duck amongst the locals. The following is a digiscoped iPhone
video: http://www.flickr.com/photos/69504362@N03/9394946943/ . Is this possibly
a Ring-necked Duck ??? According to eBird data, Ring-necked Ducks would be an
uncommon sighting.

Interestingly, I spied a similar duck in Anchorage, AK (Potters Marsh) several
weeks back that a local eBird reviewer group identified for me as a molting
male Ring-necked Duck (white bill band is not present). Here are the photos:

2013-07-29 Thread Kenneth V. Rosenberg
Hi Jason,

Yes, your bird is a molting Ring-necked Duck. There is a single Ring-neck, a
bit further along in it's molt into eclipse plumage, at Stewart Park in Ithaca
this week as well.
