[cayugabirds-l] Deep Muck site

2013-08-15 Thread Geo Kloppel
The "Deep Muck" site is off the Savannah - Spring Lake Road at the edge of the
marsh between Morgan Road and Carncross Road, with a view toward the southwest
corner of Howland Island. I haven't been there, but the pictures on Facebook by
the Friends of Montezuma look really promising.

Can someone please give David (and the rest of us who may not know) the answer
to his question regarding the Deep Muck site referenced in the MNWR Muckrace
information.

Thanks in advance.

[cayugabirds-l] Upcoming field trip

2013-08-15 Thread Linda Orkin
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up on a scheduled field trip. Paul
Parradine, forester for NYSEG and responsible, together with Robyn Bailey,
for the Salt Point Osprey platform, has offered to lead a field trip to an
area where only he can take us. This is at the Bell Station, a lake front
forest that currently is NYSEG private property. It promises to be a
beautiful trip.

This will happen on August 31. The time and meeting place are still to be
determined, but I just wanted interested people to have time to put this on
their calendar.

It is a Cayuga Bird Club field trip but as is usually true, it is open to
non-members as well. But while you're planning this, I would love it if you
would consider becoming a member of the club. We are entering the start of
a new year. You can easily join by accessing our website
cayugabirdclub.organd paying the $15 annual membership using PayPal.

Hope to see you.

[cayugabirds-l] Mourning Warbler at Lab

2013-08-15 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
Looking at the photos I took of my little warbler flock at lunch, I realized
the bird I thought was a young Hooded Warbler (not mentioned in the first post)
was in fact a first-year female MOURNING WARBLER. That was a nice little
migrant flock!

[cayugabirds-l] Hooded Warbler at Lab

2013-08-15 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
A short lunchtime walk on the Wilson Trail NW of the Lab building turned up a
beautiful male HOODED WARBLER between the little bridge and the main pond.
Also, a Chestnut-sided Warbler, American Redstart, and Common Yellowthroat.

Together with an unexpected female CERULEAN WARBLER this morning on Yellow Barn
Rd, I've seen more warblers today than I expected!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Shorebird walks

2013-08-15 Thread Dave Nutter
Just to clarify, ALL these trips are open to the public and meet at the posted time at the Montezuma NWR Visitor Center. If you missed or liked last Sunday evening's walk at Knox-Marsellus, or want to see it in a different light from another vantage, you can try the morning walk this Sunday 18 August, led by Steve Benedict. I plan to be there. The Clark's Ridge walk the following Sunday, 25 August, I believe also led by Steve Benedict, is to Tschache Pool, but somewhere on the opposite side of this giant impoundment, and far from the tower we all know on NYS-89 by I-90.--Dave NutterOn Aug 14, 2013, at 09:55 PM, chuck gibson wrote:  From: Van Beusichem, Andrea Sent: Wednesday, August 14, 2013 11:55 AMTo: Chuck Gibson Subject: Shorebird walks Hi Chuck, The Rochester Birding Association is going to open up their field trips on Saturday, August 24 and Saturday, September 28 to the public so that they can go into Knox-Marsellus.  Could you please post that info. on the Cayuga Birdlist? All of the trip dates are: Sunday, August 18, 8 AM with the Eaton Birding SocietySaturday, August 24, 11:15 AM with the Rochester Birding AssociationBONUS WALK at Clarks Ridge, Sunday, August 25,  8 AM with the Eaton Birding SocietySunday, September 1,  8 AM with Kevin McGowanSaturday, September 28,  11:15 AM with the Rochester Birding Association Thank you!Andrea Andrea VanBeusichemVisitor Services ManagerMontezuma National Wildlife Refuge3395 U.S. Route 20 EastSeneca Falls, New York 13148315/568-5987, extension 228--
