RE: [cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egret(s)?

2013-11-04 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi Dave and all,

It may be the weather pattern that brought the Cattle Egrets to the town. I
believe there were two more Cattle Egrets in the Buffalo region in last two
days (reported to Genesee Birds).

The CATTLE EGRET which we saw on the east side of NYS-96 a short distance north
of Bromka Rd in Romulus had a slight wash of blond on the forehead. The bird on
the dock across Treman Marina was much farther away, so it was hard to see
whether it had this wash or not, but Jay showed me a photo he took by going
much closer (after noticing that it did not move when a guy with a big active
dog walked along that side of the marina), and that photo showed a much whiter
forehead. I bet the bird we saw in Romulus will come back again to the same
field, even though the cows are a bit unwelcoming. It came back after Marty saw
it leave yesterday. As for how crazy it is for Cattle Egrets to be around this
late, there seems to be a pattern of them showing up in the basin well into
autumn. I once found one at Goose Haven (along NYS-89 south of South Spring
Pool by Montezuma NWR) in mid-December. I welcome others' theories as to
whether these birds got blown north on the recent strong south winds or just
happened to show up now on their way south from somewhere else.

Around 11:30 a.m.Dave and I saw the Cattle Egret Marty spotted yesterday near
Romulus. It gave us great views next to the road with 20 plus cows. The cows
seemed to harass it a bit. It then flew to the west side of the road over some
trees. An hour plus later one was reported at Treman Marina. We stopped to see
that egret. It is hard to say if it was the same bird we saw up north.
Good birding,

Re: [cayugabirds-l] It's official .... LARUE'S LAGOON!!!!

2013-11-04 Thread Joe DeVito
I was lucky enough to spend a day with Larue and Jackie while doing their
counts about 2 years ago.

The enjoyment in Larue's voice as he was calling off counts contained a little
chuckle with each birds numbers. It was an absolute honor to be apart of that.

I wish I could have been there to see the ceremony for him. And he deserves at
the least, to have a part of MNWR named after him.

The only thing left is to figure out which part we one day dedicate to Jackie
Bakker. No one has had the affect on as many birders of the area than her.
Especially this one. She is always smiling and happy to assist anyone that
walks into that visitor center. Her enthusiasm is a brush fire that spreads
uncontrollably.

I will never forget my first visit to MNWR in April 2010. She circled all the
eagles nests on a map and directed us where to go visit and what to see there.
But it was her very last comment that stuck with me over 3 years ago and it is
my current sign off in dedication to her. As we were leaving the visitor center
she said "hey, don't forget to look up."

Don't forget to look up,
Joe DeVito

[cayugabirds-l] Larue's honor

2013-11-04 Thread CFSchmitt
How delightful to hear that Larue's Lagoon is now official, and Larue St.
Clair has been honored in this way for all his efforts!
I will now proudly admit that Ron and I originated the name "Larue's
Lagoon," in Sept. of 1995. When that area was first created, and given such
a pitiful name, we thought we could at least informally give Larue some
credit for his generous volunteer work and coined "Larue's Lagoon," liking
the
alliteration. I began to post sightings using that name and it quickly
caught on.
This is pleasing news!
