Saw many in a field on right going north on Rt. 89past Sheldrake.
They flew west, not far.

Gorgeous pattern of bright whites and dark wing tips against an ominous
purplish sky!

[cayugabirds-l] Help Prevent Bird Collisions--Volunteers Needed This Spring for Survey

2014-03-21 Thread Candace Cornell
Help Prevent Bird Collisions--Volunteers Needed This Spring for Survey

The Cayuga Bird Club Conservation Action Committee and the Cornell Student
Bird Club are conducting a survey on bird collisions with buildings on the
Cornell campus during the spring migration and need your help. Volunteers
are especially needed during the CU spring break (March 29-April 6) when
most of our student volunteers will be away. Morning survey walks will take
about 40 minutes of your time. Sign up for one morning or as often as you
can. Thank you in advance for your help!

*Cornell Campus Bird Strike Monitoring Program - Spring 2014*

The goal of the Cornell Campus Bird Strike Monitoring Program is to gather
data on which buildings are having the most problems with bird strikes. By
conducting morning surveys daily, we hope to collect consistent data to
learn more about the magnitude of the bird strike problem on campus. The
data collected from this project would allow us to be better informed when
investigating solutions to any campus bird strike concerns.

For more information on the program itself and its protocols, please take a

Re: [cayugabirds-l] snow geese sightings?

2014-03-21 Thread Donna Scott
Thursday I saw many flying over Sapsucker Woods area about 2 PM. Then when I
drove to Meadowridge Vet Clinic on rt. 34 in No. Lansing, I saw a large flock
landing in a corn stubble field just north of Vet's office.
So, driving around where there are old corn fields can offer good views of Snow
Geese. I enjoy this 'cause I see other birds along the way. I usually work my
way over to the lake after a drive in the countryside.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese

2014-03-21 Thread Chris R. Pelkie
As I stepped out of the truck in my driveway at 1545 yesterday, the barky
honking of a large ‘disorganized’ flock of SNOW GOOSE was heard overhead.
I did a quick count of a subset and estimated about 400. They were relatively
low (under 1000’ probably).
I grabbed binocs but only had time to look carefully at about 100 of them: all
were white, not blue, and no obvious Ross in there.
They were headed north.
It was great to see them in good light, somewhat surprising to have them flying
in a stiff SW or W wind, and somewhat unusual for them to be overhead of my
house.
However, the other sightings of flocks over SSW at 2 and in Lansing later
suggest this was not the only group yesterday.

I am hopeful we get a big collection on the northerly end of the lake so would
also appreciate early birders’ reporting conditions up there.
