[cayugabirds-l] Stealth Duck (and ID quiz)

2014-04-12 Thread Suan Yong
So I was eating lunch at Stewart Park in the beautiful weather, casually
watching lesser scaups and redheads loafing about as close to shore as I've
ever seen, and a muskrat swimming past even closer. I picked up my binoculars
to get a closer look at the muskrat, and instead saw a duck! crouched low to
the water as if in stealth mode. Every now and then it would dive slowly like a
muskrat. It did this very close to shore, moving along until it reached the
dock, went under the footbridge to the dock, then moved back east possibly in
response to my stalking :-).

I snatched a few photos of this strange behavior, plus a few more from the few
times it "stood up proper". The ID of this duck stumped me for a bit but I
think I figured it out. Can you ID this bird? (Answer below):

Female redhead.

At least that's what I think it is.

[cayugabirds-l] Courting Merlins in Dryden

2014-04-12 Thread Matthew A. Young
Hello all,

I stopped today at Bard Prentiss' in Dryden and observed a pair of courting
MERLINS. They were calling and wing fluttering as they kept flying back and
forth Rt 392 going in and out of a tall Norway spruce. As you come into the
4-corners in Dryden stay straight and birds can be heard a few houses up.

cheers,

Matt

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt. Ospreys on nest

2014-04-12 Thread Lee Ann van Leer
I haven't been keeping up with which ospreys are nesting where this year and I
deleted a bunch of email from this list. How long have the Ospreys been on the
nest platform this year at Salt Point?

They are there right now but I am not sure if they are "Robyn and Paul" as I
didn't study them last year.

I'm at Myers Point, Lansing. There are some Horned Grebes and a Common Loon.
Nothing unusual at the moment.

[cayugabirds-l] Shindagin Hollow walk

2014-04-12 Thread Susan Fast
There's still some ice on the road at the bottom of Shindagin Hollow, but it's
navigable.
Unlooked for highlight was listening to a singing HERMIT THRUSH in the cool
early morning fog.
Also 2 singing BLUE-HEADED VIREOS.
