Re: [cayugabirds-l] East Hill osprey

2014-04-22 Thread Anne Clark
Through the 1990s, ospreys used to appear occasionally out at the Cornell Pond
Unit 1 and forage in the lake area there. (Am betting they still do--I am not
there to see)

I remember standing in my waders, taking out my video camera with its fully
exposed 2 hrs of parental feeding at a redwing nest, only to have a hunting
osprey swoop in. It was hunting clearly and gave me just time to wonder if I
should (or could) rewind a short bit of tape and tape over whatever unknown
feeding data there were. I stood there with my dilemma, not doing anything and
then, too late to act, watched as it elegantly captured a quite large fish and
flew off.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] East Hill osprey

2014-04-22 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
I think someone, probably Chris Tessaglia-Hymes reported seeing an Osprey
carrying nesting material to one of the light fixtures of the foot ball (?)
field in East Hill. I think Anne Clarke also reported seeing one in that area.
I presume it may be the same pair/or bird possibly. I looked at the map it
seems BTI is half between Beebe Lake and the Game Farm road. Distance seem to
be just under a mile and half between the two points as an Osprey flies!

So it may not be very far from the Ospreys point of view. And South end of
Cayuga Lake is about 2.5 miles, again as an Osprey flies.

I am blessed that Osprey has chosen that highway where BTI is on the way! I am
expecting to see more of them as the days progress with lots of fish!

I have also seen them hunting along Fall Creek in the past near Flat Rock and
beyond.

Cheers

Geo said "Apparently the promise of "owning" Beebe Lake as a mostly private
fishing reserve outweighs the longish commute!" Ospreys are usually not
territorial about their fishing grounds because fish are a moving resource that
can't be easily defended. Their nests, however, are stationary and are
well-guarded by the adults as is the airspace around the nest.

If there is a nest near BTI, it is not very far from Beebe Lake or Cayuga Lake
as the "osprey" flies. Ospreys prefer to live within 3.1 miles (3 km) of
abundant food sources, but will travel further if they must. As Marie pointed
out, in areas with limited resources, some ospreys will travel as far as 12
miles between their nests and food source. The limiting resource for ospreys in
our area is adequate nesting sites. Since sturdy large, dead trees or tall live
trees with open tops located out in the open and close to adequate food
resources are rare, ospreys must depend on people to build osprey platforms.or
take their chances nesting on utility poles and light fixtures.

2014-04-22 Thread Marty Schlabach
Thanks to Bill for noting that there is a west side of the lake as well!

For several years there has been an osprey nest at the top of the light tower
of the former landing strip at the Seneca Army Depot. It is visible from rt
96a, less than a mile past the entrance to the veterans cemetery and before you
get to the entrance to Sampson Park. It is sort of behind a relatively new
dairy operation on the east side of rt 96a.

There has also been an osprey nest in downtown Geneva at the top of the Verizon

Thank you so much Fritzie for rechecking and notating the exact locations of
the osprey nests in your area. As I said in my earlier e-mail, I am trying to
keep track of all the osprey nests on Cayuga Lake and am starting to collect
information on Seneca Lake. Your list of active nests is invaluable to my
efforts is greatly appreciated.

Do you have any anecdotal data on how long these individual nests have been in
use by ospreys? Any recollections, no matter how approximate, may be useful. I
know you are very busy and will patiently await your reply. Meanwhile, I hope
you are enjoying this delightful, albeit changeable, weather and the birds it

[cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk etc.

2014-04-22 Thread Chris R. Pelkie
While we were finishing dinner in our glass-roofed conservatory, I saw a
crow-sized bird soar in and begin circling overhead. Hoping for a raven, I
grabbed the binocs at hand and was as happy to see it was a BROAD-WINGED HAWK
(not a new yard bird but first of year for me and for yard). It circled several
times giving great looks at the tail before sailing off to the east up West
Meadow Dr Lansing.

Shortly after 2 WOOD DUCKs flew over (they were in the creek a couple weeks
back).

I went out to see what other goodies would appear when what to my wondering
eyes but about 50 RING-BILLED GULLs flying in an almost perfect goose-like V
(somewhat flatter than the typical goose pattern) on their way back to the lake
for the night. This is the biggest organized gull group I’ve ever seen. I have
had small well-formed V’s of a dozen or so gulls pass over in the past (not
this year) but at first glance up I thought ‘wow what are those snow geese
doing here now?’.

[cayugabirds-l] Courtship flight

2014-04-22 Thread Geo Kloppel
My local pair of Broad-winged Hawks was up in the light sprinkles, doing an
afternoon courtship flight (my interpretation) just a few minutes ago.

Early this morning I went out in the woods looking for any new arrivals.
Hearing nothing but Junco trills, I was perhaps getting a little bored. To
entertain myself I played a couple of Pine Warbler trills on my iPhone.
Immediately a Junco flew in close to investigate. "Oops! Sorry..." I apologized
and moved on.

[cayugabirds-l] Fascinating Blue Jay behavior (courtship?)

2014-04-22 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi all,

I just witnessed some really cool Blue Jay behavior. Two jays were on the
ground under one of my feeders, when suddenly one began hopping around the
other in a very odd pose, leaning inward as it circled around the other bird,
almost hopping on one foot at times, standing up tall and with its outside wing
slightly spread. It did this several times, sometimes switching direction,
while the other watched it. The two separated and both strutted around standing
up very tall with their crests elevated. Then the circling was repeated several
times and I am pretty sure that, at least once, it was the other bird that did
the circling! Then some more strutting. Then both birds seemed to lose
interest, and started to feed instead.

Never seen anything like it! Quite amusing to watch. I wonder if it was
courtship…will do some reading to find out.

[cayugabirds-l] Please Report Osprey Nests Locations!

2014-04-22 Thread Candace Cornell
I am tracking the local osprey population distribution and density in the
Cayuga Lake Basin. I am also starting to locate nests in the Seneca Lake
Basin and am interested in knowing osprey nest locations elsewhere in
Tompkins County. However, during the spring and summer, I spend the
majority of my time observing the osprey nest at Salt Point, Lansing,
making this data collection nearly impossible without the help of others.

If you have any osprey sightings or see any active and inactive osprey
nests in areas *other *than those listed below, please send them to me <

which was one of the very few in the region at the time.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey nests.

These are all nests with visible birds.
I went back twice to check. I'm swamped with work so will check on
a couple other nests soon as I have time but not before the end of the mo. at
the rate I'm going. Hope this helps/clarifies.
