Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rose Breasted Grosbeak

2014-04-29 Thread Dave Nutter
Melissa Groo's place is just outside the Cayuga Lake Basin in Shindagin Hollow.
We're still waiting for a report that Rose-breasted Grosbeaks got over the
Chesapeake - Great Lakes Divide into the CLB.

[cayugabirds-l] Thanks!

2014-04-29 Thread Carol Keeler
Wouldn't you know my email wasn't working right yesterday and only a few
messages got through, so I missed Melissa's post. Thanks for letting me know.
No one has seen a Hummingbird yet, have they?

[cayugabirds-l] Rose Breasted Grosbeak

2014-04-29 Thread Carol Keeler
A friend in Jordan, NY just had a RB Grosbeak at her feeder. Has anyone seen
them in the Cayuga bird list area? I don't remember seeing any mentioned. Any
Hummingbirds yet? Too early for their feeders? I usually put out my
Hummingbird or even Oriole feeders out when I read about sightings in Ithaca.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Raven carrying food

2014-04-29 Thread Geo Kloppel
Raven nests can get to be pretty noisy places, and you may easily hear the
nestlings begging, even from half a mile away. The racket gets louder and
deeper day by day!

[cayugabirds-l] Inlet Eagles

2014-04-29 Thread Marc Devokaitis
Finished up a run yesterday evening at 6:45pm, and standing at the north
edge of the Children's Garden, Kate and I observed two Bald Eagles--one
adult, and one that showed no traces of white. No bins, but we were
directly across the road--at one point they were only 30-40 yards away.

They came form the direction of the lake, and were swooping low over the
inlet in close quarters. At one point seemed to touch talons briefly. We
saw the young bird drop to the surface followed almost immediately along
the same orientation by the adult.

The young eagle appeared successful in his attempt, and continued with his
prey south along the inlet, and out of site. After 5-10 seconds, we took
our eyes off of the young bird and were surprised that neither of us could
re-locate the adult.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Raven carrying food

2014-04-29 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi Cayugabirders,

Half an hour ago I was hanging out in the swamp behind my property searching
for nesting flickers, when a Common Raven carrying food in its bill flew over
(north to south, heading toward Yellow Barn Forest area). It was being chased
by a couple of crows. The food item was somewhat elongated and curled, maybe
something like a really large earthworm. It's been thought for a long time that
ravens nested in the Yellow Barn area, but this is the first time I've
personally seen solid evidence.

[cayugabirds-l] Barn swallows

We had a few BARN SWALLOWS arrive yesterday, about 10 days later usual. They
were not happy with the house sparrows nesting in their space. SAVANNAH
