following:

Nesting Northern Flickers
Nesting WhIte-breasted Nuthatches

Nesting American Kestrels

(...and/or anything else you find that seems to have potential as a good photo
op.) Any leads are much appreciated, and as always I offer a nice print of the
subject if the photography is successful.

For folks who kindly helped me out last year on my nesting birds project, my
book "Into The Nest: Intimate Views of the Courting, Parenting, and Family
Lives of Familiar Birds" (co-authored with Laura Erickson and published by
Storey Books) will be published next spring, and each of you will get a signed
copy!
(…but I take no responsibility for the title!)

Many thanks for your help

Here's a photo of the Prairie Warbler I found on the CBC field trip this

[cayugabirds-l] New Yard Warblers

2014-05-03 Thread Suan Yong
Just spent the last few minutes being entertained by the foraging antics of a
black-and-white warbler working the trees outside my window, close enough to
see its beautifully checkered undertail coverts. Earlier this morning I had a
fleeting look at what I'm pretty sure was a male black-throated blue warbler.

When I moved to this Commonland condo/townhouse, I was just a fledgling birder
and while I appreciated its view upon the woods, I hadn't appreciated that the
line of vegetation outside my window would turn out to be a decent warbler
magnet.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Willow Flycatcher and other migrants in Mundy

2014-05-03 Thread Matthew Medler
Hi Meena and All,

Since Empidonax flycatchers can be notoriously difficult to identify visually,
I thought I would mention the possibility that the flycatcher at Mundy might
have been a Least Flycatcher. Least also gives a "whit" call, and there have
been multiple reports of Least in our area in the past few days. Willow and
Alder Flycatcher are two of our latest arrivals in the area--when I tracked
spring arrival dates from 2000 to 2009, I calculated the average Basin arrival
dates for these two species as May 17 and May 16, respectively. (Least
Flycatcher's average arrival date for 2000-2009 was April 29.)

Here are the latest eBird maps for Least and Willow for May 2014:

Least:
http://ebird.org/ebird/map/leafly?neg=true&env.minX=-115.45075808685442&env.minY=25.872982715847318&env.maxX=-59.20075808685442&env.maxY=44.80438120556643&zh=true&gp=false&ev=Z&mr=on&bmo=5&emo=5&yr=cur&byr=2014&eyr=2014

Willow:
http://ebird.org/ebird/map/wilfly?neg=true&env.minX=-115.45075808685442&env.minY=25.872982715847318&env.maxX=-59.20075808685442&env.maxY=44.80438120556646&zh=true&gp=true&ev=Z&mr=on&bmo=5&emo=5&yr=cur&byr=2014&eyr=2014

And here is a table of the average arrival dates that I calculated for 2000 to
2009:

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Willow Flycatcher and other migrants in Mundy

Hi all,

I took a late lunch walk today. There were a few migrants. First I saw and
heard the House Wren, his bubbling song was exhilarating. Then I saw this
flycatcher with olive green back and wing bars and clear eye-ring, I called it
a Trail’s Flycatcher. But
later on the way back it was giving continuous ‘whit’ calls and confirmed that
it was a  Willow Flycatcher.  I also watched it chase a moth for some time. The
third migrant was also first heard and then I knew where exactly to look for it
among the newly emerging
buds. It was a beautiful Yellow Warbler.  Lastly, I heard a Gray Catbird call,
but did not get visuals on it.

So that was exciting!

[cayugabirds-l] Palmer Woods and Arrowwood/Brentwood area, Sat 5/3

2014-05-03 Thread Mark Chao
On Saturday morning, I decided to pay my first-ever visit to Palmer Woods,
next to the A-Lot at Cornell. I saw two BROWN THRASHERS singing on adjacent
territories, one from a tree behind a house on Pleasant Grove Road and one
right above the sledding slope. Then, alerted by its rising harmonica-chord
call note, I found a HERMIT THRUSH skulking in the brush. This bird also
issued a few partial songs - exquisite but very quiet, as if meant for only
for the bird himself or for no one at all.

Students David Weber, Eric Sibbald, and Andrew Dreelin arrived, and together
we spent about 15 minutes sifting through birds in the line of tamaracks.
We found a couple of NASHVILLE WARBLERS and one BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, but
nothing else unusual. I was most surprised to see many White-throated
Sparrows foraging like finches 25+ feet off the ground.

Later, my son Tilden and I paid a very brief visit to the woods between the
Arrowwood medical complex and Sapsucker Woods. As expected, we heard
several EASTERN TOWHEES and had a fine view of one teed up on a bush and
singing. The best surprise for us was finding both a BROAD-WINGED HAWK
(heard only) and a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK (plainly seen twice flying through
the treetops).

[cayugabirds-l] Help with fox vs song sparrow id

2014-05-03 Thread M & K Mannella
I have small sparrows under the feeders. The are heavily streaked on the face
and body, with a prominent spot on the breast. My first impression is that they
are song sparrows but then they do the backward hop to scrape at the decaying
leaves. My questions to anyone who can offer some advice on id:
Do song sparrows dig like that?
Are fox sparrows always reddish? (These birds are not)

However, when he spotted a LINCOLN'S SPARROW, his toast got cold, but his heart

A small sparrow with greyish head, and fine streaks on breast, with distinct
