Re: [cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant

2015-03-12 Thread Kenneth V. Rosenberg
You had better luck than me, Steve. I did go up for about an hour at 12:30 and
did not have a single bird flying — not even a local Red-tail. Small flock of
SNOW BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS at the east end of Mt. Pleasant Rd. and a RAVEN
calling somewhere to the west. Overly optimistic I guess!

I went up to Mt. Pleasant after my morning chores, assuming Ken would be there.
Hopefully he found something else useful to do. I also expected balmy
zephyrs, but that didn't happen either. From 1030 till 1145 I saw 1 ROBIN.
But then things picked up and in the next 45 minutes I had 3 flocks of SNOW
GEESE totaling around 250, plus 3 KILLDEER.
I was entertained by the local DEER flock, which numbers 17; all but 1 look in
good shape after the winter.

[cayugabirds-l] Tame redpoll? Lethargic?

2015-03-12 Thread Antonia Saxon
A single female redpoll has been hanging around our feeders
(Trumansburg, right in the village). She's comfortable on the
ground/snow. Doesn't flee until I get very close, and then doesn't fly
very far. I can't tell if she's sassy and unafraid, or if she's ill.
Been around for a week or two. Eyes look fine.

[cayugabirds-l] Morning EIRW walk to work

2015-03-12 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

On the way to work I came upon several species of noisy birds.

A pair of Carolina Wrens were goofing around, while the male was trying to sing
different songs to show off his vocabulary.

Then I came up on a big group of birds which consisted of about 60 to 70 Am.
Robins, about 30 Cedar waxwings, did not sift them through for the Bohemians,
Blue Jays, Cardinals and House Finches. Several American Robins were singing.

A passerby commented there are lots of birds!

[cayugabirds-l] question of the day

2015-03-12 Thread Marc Devokaitis
OK folks-- hoping to crowd-source the answer to this question. Of course i
will include the requisite warning against birding WHILE driving... But
maybe someone has an answer they are passionate about. I'm thinking a
hybrid hybrid would have great appeal. Or a self-driving Google car!

*Dear Cornell Lab,*

*What is the best vehicle by which to bird in your opinion? What vehicle is
considered to be best to enjoy birding? Convenience, space, space to put
stuff and yet be handy, price, and of course view from all locations in
vehicle!*

Thanks for any thoughts!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] question of the day

2015-03-12 Thread Kathleen Kramer
While I agree with Pete, some of us... me, at this stage of life and my
now-deceased and dear friend Caissa Wilmer... have physical limitations
but don't want to give up the joy of birding.

About vehicles... I used to have a Subaru Legacy which had good-sized
windows, a hatchback for carrying stuff and four-wheel drive. Had to
let that car go, but it was a good choice... for me. (I know, not a
hybrid. Shame on me.)
