[cayugabirds-l] TVs

2015-04-17 Thread Bill Mcaneny
2 TVs sitting on my shop roof. Ominous sign. A third on a branch over the
shop. Don't think I will work in the shop today. May be a good Idea to check
behind the barns for something dead or dying. Hope it's the neighbor's
killer cat. Hope the neighbor is not on this listserv.

[cayugabirds-l] Blue-headed Vireo

2015-04-17 Thread Geo Kloppel
In my yard I've had a Blue-headed Vireo this morning, a few Ruby-crowned
Kinglets, and a new group of brightly-painted White-throated Sparrows. Still
have Fox Sparrows singing. I just spotted a Blue Jay carrying nest material
into a clump of young white pines, the so-called "cabbage trees". Ravens are
making a big racket up on the high hill. The Crows seem to be pressing them
pretty hard.

[cayugabirds-l] goose plight?

2015-04-17 Thread Judith W. Jones
We visited the Fall creek gorge by the Ithaca Falls the other day
midday. Sitting on the south side at stream level, I looked way up. On
the highest cliff, wedged at the very edge by a fallen tree etc, was a
Canada goose. Not sure it could get out of there - being checked out by
turkey vulture and redtailed hawk. Anything to be done?

[cayugabirds-l] East Hill Osprey is back

2015-04-17 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
I just saw an Osprey from office window heading to East Hill form Beebe lake
site. It might be the same one! (For the sceptics - Don't ask me how I know it
the same one, but the route it seems to take is familiar to both me and the
osprey)

[cayugabirds-l] Grackles

2015-04-17 Thread bob mcguire
I know it is not that exciting for most of you - but I just noticed a Grackle
carrying nest material into one of the conifers next to the house. I’ve had
them raising young (and recorded the juvenile begging calls) in past years. But
this is the first time I have noticed a nest site. I’m looking forward to
checking on progress.

And Eastern Towhees - are back, adding their songs to the broadening dawn
chorus.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] TVs

2015-04-17 Thread Melanie Uhlir
I hate to see people expressing violence toward cats but I understand.

I keep my cats indoors. It keeps area wildlife safe from them and them
safe from area wildlife (including speeding cars and roving dogs, by
some of which [dogs], I have been attacked while biking.)

But my neighbors let both cats and dogs go all over and do whatever.
Extremely aggravating!!

[cayugabirds-l] hawk mortality question

2015-04-17 Thread Melanie Uhlir
Yesterday while walking on a trail near Flat Rock I saw a large cluster
of spotted feathers, which I thought looked like hawk feathers, under a
young hemlock tree. I thought a bird had been devoured at the spot. But
as I continued on the path, walking away from the creek toward the
stairway up to Forest Home Drive, I saw a deceased Red-tailed Hawk,
lying belly down, with outspread wings. Could the unfortunate raptor
have collided with a tree in pursuit of prey and sustained a serious
enough injury to fall dead 30 or so yards (not sure of actual distance),
away? It was a very sad sight.

[cayugabirds-l] Palm Wabler!

2015-04-17 Thread Jody W Enck
Hi all,

I walked out of work just before 4pm (front door of the Lab of Ornithology) and
started walking on the Wilson trail south. Just before entering the forest
proper a flash of color caught my attention. Imagine my pleasant surprise when
it turned into a brightly colored Palm Warbler chasing insects. I wasn’t
expecting anything but maybe Yellow-rumped Warblers for a little while longer.
A very nice way to start my weekend.
