Re: [cayugabirds-l] GHO calling from game farm road

2015-09-28 Thread Melanie Uhlir
In Freeville the clouds didn't cover the moon until it was coming out of
the eclipse. I did happen to see to meteor whilst admiring the "Super
Blood Moon." The only soundtrack accompanying my moon-gazing was a very
loud cricket chorus and what seemed to be all of two Katydids.

I used to hear both GHO and Barred Owls here pretty frequently but
haven't heard either for a while. I also used to find owl pellets and
hear a GHO calling from the little patch of coniferous woods in the back
of the property. Once, but only once, I heard a Screech Owl. Shall I
seed my property with extraneous mice to lure some owls back? I don't
know what changed to make them move on. There are houses across the road
which used to be a field but there is still a large field next to and
behind our place (please may it always be so).

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Screech owl and eclipse

2015-09-28 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Animals sense the eclipse. We did experiments to study effect of Total Solar
eclipse on animal behaviors in India. They become quite restless. So night
animals might have something similar effect on total lunar eclipse.

I am glad so many got to see the eclipse, the weather god cooperated with us!

I also took the opportunity to look at the two galaxies when there was
totality. I could see very clearly Andromeda and the galaxy in Cassiopeia.

While watching the eclipse from our driveway we had a super clear and cloudless

Re: [cayugabirds-l] GHO calling from game farm road

2015-09-28 Thread Geo Kloppel
Here in West Danby it was Barred Owl and eclipse. No vocal Great Blue Herons,
but apropos of that, Pat and I were paddling at Jennings Pond a couple of days
ago, and we flushed a group of Mallards, who circled the pond quacking. In a
sort of domino effect, this prompted a Great Blue Heron to lift off and fly to
the big snag on the hemlock-shaded penninsula at the back of the pond, where it
perched, dislodging an adult male Merlin, who stooped repeatedly upon the
heron. The heron squawked loudly, swaying and raising its wings, until the
Merlin flew off toward downtown Danby.
