[cayugabirds-l] Windmap

2015-12-27 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

I was looking at the windmap to see where the snow geese would be moving if
they are and saw this strange line. http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/

conditions

Can anyone ( Dave Nicosia?? Bill Evans??) explain why the winds are forming a
kind of line across the country (see pictures below) where to the south of it
the winds are blowing from south to north and to the north of it the winds are
blowing from north to south? Is this pertaining to the way the front is moving?
I don't think there is any physical barrier such as mountain range or am I
wrong?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Windmap

2015-12-27 Thread Peter
Hi Meena.
As a Meteorology instructor, I've often seen wind map sites where
cooler, drier, polar air from the north/northwest meets warmer, moister
air from the southeast (a "front") but have never seen it depicted like
the one you've sent.
My best guess is that it IS a frontal boundary between the cooler
Canadian Air and the warmer, more moist Gulf aira classic
cold front.
See this site below for future use. In fact, it is now showing such a
frontal boundary (at 12:12 p.m. on the 27th.)

Hope this helps.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Windmap

2015-12-27 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Thanks Peter! Previously I used to use the map link you sent. But the one I
sent was colorful so I fell in love with this windmap. It is amazing how sharp
is the demarcation in both versions. I thought it was a front, but as you
mention I too have never seen anything so clearly dividing the country. I
think it is an unusual front.

I would keep watch to see how it changes over time!

I am always fascinated by the wind energy!

Cheers

Meena

[cayugabirds-l] Wood Duck @ Sapsucker Woods

2015-12-27 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
On this morning's birdy walk (with the rain more bearable than I expected),
there was a male wood duck with two mallards at Fuller, seen close from the
Owens platform as it slinked behind the reeds. Plenty of activity from
jingling tree sparrows, courting mallards, complaining blue jays, made for
a pleasant walk. Beaver devastation continues throughout.

[cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe--No, Montezuma Main Pool

2015-12-27 Thread Jay McGowan
The rain has made viewing difficult this morning, but with some effort
several of us have done a pretty thorough scan of the main pool, without
success. Six GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen near the tower, and a
SHORT-EARED OWL was being harassed by harriers out over the cattails. Duck
numbers and diversity are still impressive.

Less about wind and more about snow geese - my lovely SIL texted me earlier
today that 250-300 snow geese were feeding on Center Rd. King Ferry around
2pm today.
