[cayugabirds-l] Downy Woodpecker Leg Band
So yesterday at Sapsucker Woods (near Owens Platform) I photographed a male Downy Woodpecker with a metal leg band, with enough resolution to read two sides of the band: http://suan-yong.com/banded/banded.html#dowo The front say "OPEN", the rear -- I initially guessed maybe ABRL (American Bird Research Lab?), but concluded it was "ABRE", Spanish for "OPEN". Are these standard bands? Does anyone happen to know if they might be banded at the lab, or elsewhere? Should I have mentally willed the bird to jiggle its leg so the "interesting" parts of the band face outwards? :-D Suan -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Sunday hawks
Spent the afternoon at/on Broadway Rd. north of Wolcott, NY and there were hundreds of turkey vultures migrating (a friend who had been counting for much of the day had over a thousand vultures!!!), a handful of red shouldered hawks, lots of red-tail, a bunch of sharpies and coopers, a few harriers, a couple of osprey and even a couple of immature bald eagles. This wed. is suppose to be sunny and a southerly flow so am thinking of returning. [cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull at compost piles this morning
Gull numbers have sure dropped over the last week, but a Thayer's Gull was a nice reward for venturing in on a rainy day. Looks like the same bird that Ian found earlier. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S28598494 Jeff -- Jeff Gerbracht Lead Application Developer Neotropical Birds, Breeding Bird Atlas, eBird Cornell Lab of Ornithology 607-254-2117 -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
