[cayugabirds-l] Warblers at Stewart Park!

2016-04-24 Thread Sandy Wold
I walked through Renwick Woods today and saw a warbler up high in a tree
with yellow belly and black streaks, but forgot the facial markings when I
saw the stunning Yellow-rumped Warbler later at Fuertes. It might have
been a Magnolia Warbler, but I am not sure. Renwick was loaded with
robins, starlings, grackles, a few ducks (Mallards?), and one Red-winged
Blackbird. There was also a Red-bellied Woodpecker, a Northern Flicker,
and a Downy Woodpecker.

Along the inlet were many geese, and a pair with four goslings! Isn't it
early for goslings??? They looked to be a few weeks old. The tribe of
cormorants is back (about 37 in the trees at Jetty Woods and another 20+
out on in the water. As I walked into Fuertes, I was greeted by a
Yellow-rumped Warbler with stunning blue slate, black, yellow, and white
colors in the shrubs and gave me close views with lots of calling. I
thought there were four of them, but heard only one calling and figured
that there were only two circling around me. A Song Sparrow was up high,
and I flushed out two small shorebirds. They were smaller than killdeer,
not calling, and had one white stripe on the wings and no strong markings
otherwise.

Lastly, there were 4 Hooded Mergansers, one male displaying vigorously and
3 female. On the way home, I heard the kingfisher zip by, heard and saw
six swifts hunting furiously and high over Fall Creek and what I think
might have been one Bank Swallow (lightness under the chin).

[cayugabirds-l] 3 Ospreys

2016-04-24 Thread Betsy Darlington
I was just walking up Falls St. ("Gun Shop Hill") in Ithaca, and 3 ospreys
were circling low, interacting, and calling almost constantly. At one
point, at least two of them landed on top of the tall old Ithaca Gun
smokestack (one at a time, not simultaneously).

We just drove past this pole. There was an osprey in the nest and one across 89
eating a fish in the dead tree.

[cayugabirds-l] Winter Wren, Virginia Rail

2016-04-24 Thread Geo Kloppel
On a short walk west from Michigan Hollow Road up the south leg of the Abbotts
Loop Trail, Pat and I found a Winter Wren singing near a promising nest site
(overturned tree roots), a few Blue-headed Vireos, some Ruby-crowned Kinglets,
etc.

Earlier we stopped at the little marsh in front of the old county landfill,
hoping for Virginia Rail, and were not disappointed! I got out of the car and
said hello to Meena, who was already there. As we exchanged greetings, a series
of grunts came from the cattails on the north side of the causeway. Over the
next few minutes we had a nice encounter with a talkative Virginia Rail, who
gave "kiddick" calls and a series of grunts, and eventually left its hiding
place to walk around in the (comparative) open.

Earlier still, we looked in on the heron colony at Sylvan Lane, to find about a
dozen Great Blues hanging around the nests, sitting the nests, or fussing with
sticks.

[cayugabirds-l] Eagles and Osprey Final Note

2016-04-24 Thread Peter
I forgot to mention in my last post that at Mud Lock my companions and I
witnessed an osprey harassing the heck out of a bald eagle for about 3-5
minutes. It was quite a spectacle with the osprey being sure to "attack"
from the top side of the eagle. At one point the eagle half turned its
body over (much like a Canada goose can do as it slows down while coming
in for a landing) to attack back. I had no idea the big bird could be so
agile. Seeing the two raptors so close together was very instructive
with respect to ascertaining the relative size difference between the two.
