[cayugabirds-l] Palm Warbler at Swan Pond, Stewart Pk, Ithaca
After an early evening meeting at City Hall there was still daylight, so I biked to Stewart Park. Ann Mitchell wrote that she had seen a Yellow-rumped Warbler at the Swan Pond this morning, so I looked very carefully. I kept hearing a vague trill, always from the opposite side. Finally on my second circuit I found a warbler, but instead it was a Palm Warbler, perched in bushes beside the lake, bobbing its tail constantly. Although the light was getting poor, I could see a yellow wash all below, strongest on the throat through upper central breast, but the markings on the side of the breast did not seem rufous, so I don't know whether it qualifies as Eastern. Some years I have had trouble tracking down a Palm Warbler, so I feel particularly fortunate finding an apparent year first for the basin. --Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] First nest building robin
Sharp looking female American Robin took long streamers of grasses and tried for log-sized goldenrod stalks to a nice solid crotch in an small ash this morning. I have seen more action in the nest site this evening. A Phoebe tried to fly into our garage, which I take as a nest site seeking sign. And our FOY Chipping Sparrow is at the feeder, while the Tree Sparrows, here two days ago, are apparently absent. [cayugabirds-l] Purple Finch
The Purple Finches and Chipping Sparrows have made it to Auburn. I got the Sparrow a couple of days ago, and just got a beautiful male Purple Finch. It was interesting to compare Sparrows. I had a Tree and Chipping Sparrow feeding side by side. A single LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH (first of year for me) was singing on Leonard Road this morning. Not the song that I have heard from the birds there in the past. [cayugabirds-l] Myers Point birds and other arrivals
I've been visiting Myers Point occasionally in the mornings before work. I haven't had anything rare so far, but I've had a few nice birds. Last Friday in wind and sleet, including an early Lesser Yellowlegs (subsequently seen by many over the weekend), Bank and Cliff swallows, and five migrating Red-throated Loons: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S35755309 Yesterday in the sun, with a large group of Bonaparte's Gulls and the first Common Tern of the year: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S35842830 And today, fairly slow with fewer Bonaparte's but my first CASPIAN TERNS and a nice GREATER YELLOWLEGS on the spit: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S35870058 We had our first BROAD-WINGED HAWK of the year over Sapsucker Woods yesterday at noon, as well as a pair of adult BALD EAGLES and a few migrant COMMON LOONS. A WILSON'S SNIPE was displaying over the marsh past the far parking lot here at the Lab last night, as well as two distant AMERICAN WOODCOCKS. YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS appeared in quite a few spots yesterday, as well as Brown Thrashers, Eastern Towhees, Field and Chipping sparrows, and Blue-headed Vireos. -- Jay McGowan Macaulay Library Cornell Lab of Ornithology jw...@cornell.edu -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
