Re: [cayugabirds-l] Painted ladies

2017-09-24 Thread Suan Yong
Big Painted Lady irruption this year, was detected early elsewhere, and now
coming through our neck of the woods. The species has an almost worldwide
distribution, and is famous for their migrations, but they're irruptive and
irregular (another way of saying we don't fully understand when and why it
happens, I think).

Haven't noticed any American Painted Ladies among this lot; they're harder to
tell apart from above, easier from below (four small eyes instead of two big
eyes). I'm using this opportunity to get familiar with the few upperside
patterns that distinguish them from American.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Ladies

2017-09-24 Thread Geo Kloppel
Hi Bard,

I tried to determine which species mine were. They had strings of 4 - 5
equal-sized submarginal black spots with blue centers both topside and
underside of the hindwings, so I called them painted ladies (Vanessa cardui)
rather than American ladies (Vanessa virginiensis).

I was struck by how small the individuals in this fall generation are. Earlier
in the summer I had some _big_ painted ladies, nearly the size of Great
Spangled Fritillary.

I had three ladies in my yard yesterday am not happy to see what appears to be
increased interest in butterflies. Butterflies and moths were my way into
nature studies although my parents were bird watchers. My interest in birds
came much later.

[cayugabirds-l] Not birds--Painted lady butterfly obs across Eastern US

2017-09-24 Thread AB Clark
Both Cayuglists are noting the painted lady explosion.

And interestingly, if you type "painted lady butterfly" into a search engine
right now, you will find that there are “wow—all the painted ladies” reports
from Minnesota, Jamestown, and many more places. What kind of synchrony is
this?
