[cayugabirds-l] Special visitor at our pond
At about 5:30 tonight, as I walked around our half acre pond, I scared up a Least Bittern that was at the pond edge. I got to within 15 feet of it when if flew up in front of me, which startled me, and it flew 50 feet directly away from me heading for a pine tree. It flew into the pine, but I couldn’t see it land. Never found it again. I feel badly that I made it leave a place that perhaps it was going to spend the night. [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park Black Terns
This morning just before 9am Jay McGowan sent a text rare bird alert about a Black Tern among the swallows off Stewart Park. I arrived a little over an hour later. On my first scope scan of the lake I saw plenty of swallows and cormorants but no black tern. After an unsuccessful binocular scan, I tried another scope scan and found a Black Tern flying low above the lake among the many swallows. It was farther away than East Shore Park and initially in the direction of Portland Point. It was amazingly agile at short fast dives & turns when it went after some hapless airborne insect. After awhile the Black Tern began working its way west, passing in front of the piling cluster but beyond the Red Lighthouse toward the lakeshore at Treman. It went out of view momentarily in the SW corner of the lake, then reappeared flying north, but flying straighter and gradually climbing, and with a second Black Tern. They continued northbound but separated so much that I could only follow one in my scope. I eventually lost it against the sky above the tree line above the Ithaca Yacht Club at 1036am. I looked for the second Black Tern but did not refind it, so my guess is that it also continued north. But, it’s worth scanning the swallows in case the same or another Black Tern joins them. - - Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
Re: [cayugabirds-l] First
Orioles, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. Catbirds and indigo bunting (1?) and finally this am a hummer are turning my feeders into something a bit tropical looking. More mild aggressive displays than I have ever seen. Catbirds doing a cute little wide beak gape. Fruit update: grosbeaks and maybe catbirds like split open bananas to go with orange and peanut suet blocks. [cayugabirds-l] Warblers!
Inspired by Dave Nutter's post about warblers along the Black Diamond Trail, Ken and I decided to walk a section of the Black Diamond trail that is accessible from a parking area above the Cayuga Nature Center. Right away we started seeing/hearing yellow warblers, catbirds, yellowthroats and song and field sparrows. But also a gorgeous Cape May warbler in a tree right at the parking area. On the Black Diamond trail we ran into our first large mixed warbler flock of this spring. Lots of yellow-rumps, but also Nashville, Black-throated Green, Northern Parula, Redstart, Chestnut-sided, Palm and Magnolia warblers busily foraging. So fun to see them flitting through the trees, though they were mostly backlit from our vantage point. We also heard our first Red-eyed Vireo of the year, heard a drumming Ruffed Grouse and saw a Veery. On our way back we had very close views of 2 Northern Parulas foraging for insects in the new leaves of a small maple! In all, we found 54 species on our 2.6 mile round-trip walk. Re: [cayugabirds-l] First
We've had more orioles this year at our orange feeder (and sometimes peanut feeder) than ever - at least 4 males and 3 females. They also perch on our window mullions and are often sitting in the bushes near the feeders. I hope this is because they're having a great year as a species. Also we've had more sightings of both male and female rose-breasted grosbeaks than ever before.
