[cayugabirds-l] Big brown bats .. Union Springs

2020-05-22 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
At 7:30 this evening I saw a big brown bat flying around the spruce tree
in front of the house. I probably missed seeing the 2nd one because I
was checking on the orange halves that have drawn unwanted ants. I
daubed Vaseline on the branch on which the feeder hangs.

This is the 3rd time I've seen the big bats flying in daytime. Insects
are truly rare here altho' I did see a large moth & some kind of beetle
flew into my hair. Thus far I've had no bug splats on my windshield.

Wishing everyone a safe Memorial weekend.

Fritzie

[cayugabirds-l] Barred owls at Lake Treman

2020-05-22 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

A barred owl nest with nestling peering out was observed in a basswood tree
cavity on the Treman Lake trail loop on the east side of the lake. Posted to
ebird with photos (a little blurry as the distance was a little too much for my
camera lens) and audio recording of adult parent.

Cheers,

Kevin

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Howland Island question

2020-05-22 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Hi everyone! I’ve heard some rumors going around, and we got a question at the
MAC, that Carncross Rd leading to Howland’s Island has been washed out at some
point. I haven’t been in the area recently so I checked with the DEC on Morgan
Rd. The road is not washed out. There was water over the road a few weeks ago
but there isn’t now. If anyone ever has questions about access to or use of
lands in the NYSDEC Northern Montezuma Wildlife Management Area (including
Howland’s Island, Guys Marsh, the Montezuma Audubon Center land, among others)
you are welcome to contact the DEC directly at (315) 365-2134, this is the
Morgan Rd office and they can provide the most accurate and up to date
information.

Have a great weekend.

I’ve only been there once, but I recall Killdeer nesting on the open dirt
tracks. Watch where you step!

Best,

Robyn

I, too, am interested in this location. If anyone is responding—please post to
the group.

better for birders? Do you recommend a driving loop or walking?

Thanks for any insights you can offer.

[cayugabirds-l] Blackpoll warbler

2020-05-22 Thread Laura Stenzler
Blackpoll warbler singing in the swamp on Armitage Rd, near the prothonotary
warbler box. The prothonotary is also singing, as well as eastern wood pewee,
northern waterthrush, yellow throated vireo, redstarts, Nashville warbler,
great crested flycatcher and all of the regulars. A beautiful morning.
