Re: [cayugabirds-l] Question about "blackbirds."

2021-03-13 Thread Linda Orkin
Liz that’s a great question that I’ve wondered about myself. Hope
answers/guesses get posted here. Starlings aren’t even related.

[cayugabirds-l] Question about "blackbirds."

2021-03-13 Thread Liz Brown
Here's something I wonder about every spring, when the big mixed flocks of
grackles, blackbirds, cowbirds, and starlings show up:

Why do all our black passerines (with the exception of crows and ravens) hang
out together? There aren't any small black birds who DON'T join these big
flocks, are there?
Or, to flip the question around - why are these birds all black?

[cayugabirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon at Stewart Park

2021-03-13 Thread Diane Morton
The male Eurasian Wigeon found by Dave Nutter at Stewart Park yesterday is
still there this morning. Foraging with American Wigeon and Green-winged
Teal on a mud bar out from the tennis courts.
It is windy viewing but good light.

2021-03-13 Thread Kyle Gage
I live on Canandaigua Lake & we can get flocks of several thousand & in fact a
sizable flock was around most of this winter. Seneca Lake can also have decent
numbers but neither lake has the incredible numbers Cayuga Lake gets. I’m not
sure of numbers on the other Finger Lakes but eBird records would give an idea.
