[cayugabirds-l] injured banded pigeon

2014-09-23 Thread Dave Bulatek Teresa Wagner Bulatek
There is a multi-colored pigeon walking along West Northview Rd, off
Coddington, banded, can't seem to fly but quite tame. It was here yesterday,
barely walking according to the person who saw it yesterday. I couldn't find
it when I got home yesterday, and he called the Lab of O and was told his
message would be passed along to someone.

It is still here. I have a pic of it if someone wants me to text it to them.
Not sure what else to do.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] injured banded pigeon

2014-09-23 Thread Dave Bulatek Teresa Wagner Bulatek
The person who called Lab of O yesterday is back in town today, and we just
tried to find it - he had an appt he could not miss yesterday so told me about
it. Can't find it right now, but Victoria described how to catch it and where
to take it, so I have a towel and box ready if it appears again today or
tomorrow.

I have spoken with this gentleman and offered to send him to the Vet School.
He just wanted to do the right thing to let someone know and didn't want to
take it any further. I passed his concern to Victoria Campbell who was looking
into it. Thank you.

[cayugabirds-l] warblers, Ithaca South Hill

2014-05-10 Thread Dave Bulatek Teresa Wagner Bulatek
male and female Blackburnian warbler
male and female Yellow-rumped warbler

Both pairs of birds were really working on the catkins of the river birch near
our deck. One went briefly to the mixed-seed feeder on the deck but left as
soon as a goldfinch arrived.

We have not seen these before, though, of course, they may have been here many
times. That's always an interesting question we have - is a first for us also
a first for the birds visiting our yard? We assume we've just never found them
before.

We keep hearing something during the day and at night, making single chirps or
peeps. They chirp once or twice, then stop for a few minutes. This is not
much info, but I heard them recently in Massachusetts as well. Any info, or
possibilities?

Thanks, Teresa Bulatek

Re: Orioles and trumpet vines

2009-08-11 Thread Dave Bulatek Teresa Wagner Bulatek
We have just seen this happening - by both an either immature or female
oriole and a male oriole in our yellow trumpet vine - at different times in
one day. They hammered into the base of the bloom at different angles; the
bloom usually dropped off eventually. They then either dropped down to that
bloom on the ground or started a new one. It's a very different from the
gentle nodding of vine branches as the hummingbirds work their way through!

An immature oriole (Baltimore or Orchard--I'm not sure which--any tips on
identifying them would be appreciated) has been shredding the flowers on
our Trumpet vine--presumably to get at the nectar. Today I saw a humming
bird chase it!

Has anyone else seen this behavior? This is the first time I've noticed
it.
