Re: [cayugabirds-l] Finger Lakes Land Trust Spring Bird Quest update

2020-05-04 Thread Dave Spier
The FLLT (https://www.fllt.org/) is an excellent organization and will make
good use of the funds raised.
To everyone who participates individually in the modified Spring Bird
Quests, would it be possible to incorporate the 3rd NYS Breeding Bird Atlas
into your birding if you are not already doing so? This could be done on
either a formal or a casual basis depending on the particular preserve's
relationship to the BBA survey block(s) involved. The resulting data would
likely inform future conservation decisions. If you already use the eBird
Mobile app, it's simply a matter of changing to the New York Breeding Bird
Atlas portal. (https://ebird.org/atlasny/about/submitting-data#changeportal)
Thank you for your consideration. Please feel free to email me with any
questions.

*March 2020 Updates*
Wow! We are only two months into the atlas and already 12 species have been
confirmed breeding
!
Bald Eagles have been confirmed breeding in *50* blocks, and Great Horned
Owls have now been reported 'singing' in over 100 blocks. Many thanks to
the 432 atlasers who have submitted nearly 6,000 checklists!

This month we focus on one of the three Atlas Essentials
:
atlas blocks.

*Knowing Your Location While Atlasing*

Atlas block boundaries are essential to successful atlasing. While you're
in the field, how can you keep track of where you are? If you see a Common
Raven carrying nesting material (CN) to a distant treetop, how can you tell
which atlas block the nest is in? Check out our tips and tricks to keep
track of block boundaries in the field
.

Viewing Block Data

Fledgling Eastern Screech-Owl by Greg Hottman/Macaulay Library

.
Breeding bird data are rolling in fast! As we head into spring, more and
more birds will start nesting (species like woodpeckers, corvids, and
owls). Whether you are simply curious or you want to focus your atlasing
efforts, you'll want to know what other people have reported in a block. Use
one of these three methods

to see what species have already been observed in a block.

*Priority vs Non-priority Blocks*

Priority blocks are where you should focus your atlasing: *if you have a
choice to atlas in a priority block or non-priority block, choose the
priority*! Don't worry—if your favorite birding spot is not in a priority
block, *every sighting still counts*!

*March Challenge: Dancing Woodcocks*
Each month from March to August will feature season-specific atlas
challenges. In March, one of our most spectacular dancers begins to
display: the American Woodcock

will soon be delighting at dusk with their twittering courtship displays! *In
March, every block where you report displaying woodcock (C) gives you one
chance to be NY BBA III Atlaser of the Month.* If you win, you’ll be
featured on the atlas homepage, and get some atlas gear! (Photo of *peenting

I'd say this requires volunteers to enter data for them. The Eaton Birding

[cayugabirds-l] NY BBA 3 has started

2020-01-01 Thread Dave Spier
The 3rd NY Breeding Bird Atlas officially started today, January 1, 2020!
We hope that you will join thousands of other birders in documenting the
state's breeding species over the next five years! New York is home to a
wonderful and diverse group of breeding birds, but it is a vast region, so
we will need your help! We encourage birders of all backgrounds, from new
birders to experienced Atlasers, to help document as many breeding birds as
possible.

The New York Breeding Bird Atlas III website (
https://ebird.org/atlasny/about) contains a lot of great information about
the Atlas, and we encourage you to explore the many resources on the site,
including a new handbook. As the breeding season of many species starts
later in the spring, there will be more Atlas training workshops and other
opportunities to learn about Atlas goals and how atlasing works. If you're
eager to get started right away in January, here are a few key points:

All of the data entry for the project will be via a dedicated eBird portal
for NY Breeding Bird Atlas III. eBird offers real-time data entry and
outputs, so you’ll be able to follow along with results throughout the
breeding season and across the entire project period.

For this Atlas, New York State has been divided into a GPS-based system of
5,710 blocks, each roughly 3.2 miles by 2.8 miles in size which is a change
from previous atlases.* (see https://ebird.org/atlasny/about/atlas-blocks
for details) From these new blocks covering the entire state, the Atlas
Team has selected a subset of priority blocks that are evenly distributed
to ensure broad coverage. To complete the Atlas, we need to adequately
survey all of the priority blocks, which make up 1/3 of all Atlas blocks.
Priority blocks contain many popular birding spots and great breeding
habitats in our region, and are where the focus should be. But if your
backyard or favorite birding destination does not fall within a priority
block, you are encouraged to submit your breeding observations for those
areas, too.

A new map overlay (https://lab.nynhp.org/bba/) allows you to search for
priority blocks near you and download detailed block maps. This is also
where you will be able to sign up for blocks. Anybody can atlas in any
Atlas block, so it is not necessary to sign up for a block. But if you are
especially interested in atlasing in a certain block, signing up is a great
way to indicate your interest and commitment in documenting the breeding
birds in that block.

Although the Atlas starts January 1, only a very small number of species,
particularly Great Horned Owl, might be demonstrating signs of breeding
behavior in the winter. If you head up to the North Country, you might
encounter Crossbills (Red and/or White-winged) singing or carrying twigs.
This great chart (
https://s3.amazonaws.com/is-ebird-wordpress-prod-s3/wp-content/uploads/sites/79/2019/11/Breeding-Guideline-Chart.pdf)
provides very detailed information about when species are breeding in New
York. In general, breeding codes should only be used for a species if the
species is in the "E" or "B" portion of its breeding calendar.

We realize that for some of you, either atlasing or using eBird will be
new, but don't worry – there are lots of resources to help you learn more!
The Atlas III website is a great place to start. If you have questions,
there's a facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/nybbadiscussion/
Working with Atlas Project Coordinator Julie Hart, a team of regional
coordinators will be coordinating Atlas activities across New York State.
Feel free to ask questions or message me.

Good Atlasing,
Dave Spier

(My thanks to Matt Medler for allowing me to customize his message.)

*If you helped with the 2nd atlas in 2000-2004, note that the new blocks
for the 3rd atlas have changed. Instead of the old 5X5 km square grid (with
numbers like 3176D), there is now a GPS-based system based on the USGS
7.5-minute (arc-minute) Quadrangle ("Quad") maps. Each is divided into six
blocks.

[cayugabirds-l] Fwd: MONTEZUMA RAPTOR SURVEY SUMMARY REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 22, 2017

2017-02-23 Thread Dave Spier
-- *Forwarded message* --
From: David Marsh

Subject: MONTEZUMA RAPTOR SURVEY SUMMARY REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 22, 2017
To: "David S. Marsh"

Hello Surveyors,

After seven surveys with temperatures in the 30’s one would expect winter
would soon descend on us. The 50 degree temperatures tonight, combined with
the presence of an amazing number of waterfowl, made the survey a spectacle
to witness. It was like being at the beach for surveyors, with very good
visibility and no wind as bonuses. For Raptors, the absence of snow cover
made it easier to hear and see prey. It was satisfying that we were able
to survey 19 sites, two more than last week, with 33 surveyors, the same
number as last week and one below the high mark for the season. A total of
99 Raptors were spotted, 16 higher than last week.

Four sites reported double digit sightings, Hidden Marsh-North (16), Main
Pool-North (14), Morgan Rd. (12), and Main Pool-South (10), with notable
numbers at Hidden Marsh-South (8), Route 31 Muck (7), Waugh (7), and
Sandhill Crane Unit (6). The Short-eared Owls (SEOW) were reported at
Hidden Marsh-North (5), Morgan Rd. (2), Main Pool-North (2), and Waugh (1).
The Main Pool area, collected the largest number of Northern Harriers
(NOHA), with Main Pool-North (8) and Main Pool-South (8) together
maintaining their reputation as the NOHA hangout. NOHA were also reported
at Hidden Marsh-North (3), Route 31 Muck (2), and one each at Hidden
Marsh-South, Carncross Rd., and the Sandhill Crane Unit. Bald Eagles (BAEA)
made an impressive showing at 12 of the total 19 sites, with reports of
birds sitting on some nests. Rough-legged Hawks (RLHA) continued their
unusually strong presence this season and sightings were only slightly
below last week. RLHAs were seen at Hidden Marsh-North (5), Morgan Rd. (2),
and one each at Hidden Marsh-South, Guy’s Marsh, Route 31 Muck, and U2
Fallow Field. Red-Tailed Hawk sightings were reported at 12 of the 19
sites. A Coopers Hawk (COHA) was reported, the first one seen since
November, and the first Peregrine Falcon (PEFA) of the season was spotted.

Winter Raptor surveyors are treated to much more than spotting birds of
prey fighting the elements to stay alive in a challenging climate.
Montezuma is life on the large screen. Tonight we were treated to ducks and
geese flying against a blazing sunset, huge crowds of Snow Geese looking
for a nighttime roost at sunset, waves of Canada Geese calling, swarms of
newly arrived Ducks, Swans bringing dignified beauty to the skies, and a
couple of skunks , not flying, busily looking for food. The night belonged
to waterfowl, and spring was in the air.

Highlights from tonight’s survey were:

SEOW: 10 this week (TW) vs. 12 last week (LW).

NOHA: 24 TW vs. 20 LW.

BAEA: 28 TW vs. 14 LW.

RLHA: 11 TW vs. 12 LW.

RTHA: 21 TW vs. 22 LW.

The SEOW trend continues above the prior three seasons. The NOHA sightings
tonight were above those of the previous seven survey nights, the trend is
up, however, the cumulative sightings lag those of last season at this
point.

Survey hats were presented to five more surveyors for assisting with at
least 10 surveys this season in recognition of their significant
contributions. Those receiving hats are (left to right in the attached
photo): Greg Karl, Sarah Lyons, Kyle Gage, Pete Saracino, and Maggie
Passmore. A total of 17 surveyors have earned hats this season. Applause
please!

Jackie Bakker fueled us up with her very delicious brownies. Thank you
Jackie. I will bring cookies next week unless someone else volunteers to
bring some treats. The next Survey is scheduled for March 1st, meeting at
the Refuge Offices at 4:45 pm. If you are planning on helping with the
survey, please e-mail me no later than 6:00 pm on February 28. Thank you
all for your time and dedication.

Interesting coincidence; had about the same mix of birds [exc. House Finch
instead of purple and 1 white-throat instead of white-crown]. Without checking
the feeders, I walked out in the morning and scared a totally-unexpected flock
of 8 Eve. Grosbeaks, a species we haven't had at our house in years.

I posted a few photos from Montezuma [Thursday, 10/18] but I need help with a

[cayugabirds-l] woodcock photo [out of area]

2012-03-23 Thread Dave Spier
I've been so busy with eBird that I'm just getting around to posting a woodcock
photo from Assateague National Seashore, MD, on the Eaton club's Facebook
page: http://www.facebook.com/groups/eatonbirds/
Back on Feb. 21, when we selected and set up on a site, we had no idea there
was a woodcock in the campground or that it was the edge of his territory...

2011-10-12 Thread Dave Spier
The new schedule won't be out for some time, but in the past this event has
offered virtually non-stop birding from early-morning walks and bird banding to
evening owl prowls.  In between there were mid-morning and afternoon
birding field trips as well as an all-day Saturday trip.

2011-06-05 Thread Dave Spier

Eleven members of the Eaton Birding Society went to Seneca Meadows Wetlands
Preserve today. BOBOLINKS and SAVANNAH SPARROWS ruled the day, seeming to call
from everywhere. Fewer in number, but just as vocal, EASTERN MEADOWLARKS added
their voices to the morning concert. At the marshes to the south end of the
property we had AMERICAN BITTERN and LEAST BITTERN flying over and COMMON
MOORHEN calling from the cattails. PIED-BILLED GREBES were firmly entrenched in
every marsh on the property. A family of WOOD DUCKS were observed on the south
pond. A very pleasant day.

American Black Ducks. Once the most abundant fresh-water duck in eastern North

[cayugabirds-l] MNWR shorebird photos, 5/27/11

2011-05-27 Thread Dave Spier
So far, I posted one Whimbrel photo and the other shorebirds on
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dave_spier/
The Whimbrel photo also posted on http://montezumabirding.webs.com/news.htm but
I ran into a problem adding the associated shorebirds; they did go into the
Shorebirds photo album at the end of the series, though:
http://montezumabirding.webs.com/apps/photos/

My thanks to Jay McGowan for confirming the Black-belly and Semipalm ID's.

[cayugabirds-l] eagles at Black Creek

2011-01-27 Thread Dave Spier
There have been sporadic reports of Bald Eagles at Black Creek where it exits
the Montezuma Marshes west of Savannah, NY.  Yesterday (Jan. 26) there were 2
adults and one was dragging a large fish, probably a carp, across the ice.  It
left a reddish-pink stain on the ice next to a small strip of open water easily
visible from the Rt. 31 bridge just west of Messner Rd.  There's a photo at
