[cayugabirds-l] fledgling mourning dove

2019-07-09 Thread Judith W. Jones
In the grass in my backyard being fed by a junco. It would open its
mouth and the junco stuffed something in it found in the grass, I
couldnt see what. Lasted at least a minute.  Is this common?

[cayugabirds-l] goose plight?

2015-04-17 Thread Judith W. Jones
We visited the Fall creek gorge by the Ithaca Falls the other day
midday. Sitting on the south side at stream level, I looked way up. On
the highest cliff, wedged at the very edge by a fallen tree etc, was a
Canada goose. Not sure it could get out of there - being checked out by
turkey vulture and redtailed hawk. Anything to be done?

[cayugabirds-l] Birding lake/Montezuma yesterday

2014-12-01 Thread Judith W. Jones
We also saw the pipits (2) along Wildlife Drive at Montezuma. Believe
the large white birds were Tundra swans, not snow geese (saw them fly,
no black wing tips etc. Many mixed duck groups , including the Mill Pond
in Union Springs, preponderance of Wigeons, and the notable and easily
seen raft just south of east shore sailing with maybe 30 ruddy ducks.
Very rewarding day.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Mystery Mallard - Stewart Park today

Check Sibley p 72 - has a picture under Black DuckxMallard Hybrid.

 Hi All,

I am reaching out to the odd duck (although this one isn't overly odd)

 Domestic? Call duck?

 Hybrid? If so with what?

The face struck me at first as gadwall, but none of the other features
seem to be there. Not much American Black Duck either...

Here is some digiscoped video and photos:

Had a treat yesterday. We stopped at a fishing spot just south of Chittenango

(6-8) flock of Bohemian Waxwings - gorgeous. My bird guides make this look
unusual. Been seen anywhere else around here? Judy

[cayugabirds-l] merg babies/re Elaina

2011-05-31 Thread Judith W. Jones
A week ago I watched, from the swan pen at SP, a mother common merg with 10
babies swim out from shore. 4 or 5 rode on her back, the rest in a line behind.
Every few minutes the mother would maneuver with a dip sideways so that the
most forward babies on her back would fall off and the rest would do moving up.
The family was maybe 30 yds offshore when another female merg flew in and
attacked the mother. Mother dumped babies and fought attacker off. Attacker
moved abt 4 yds away, flattened her head, and repeated the attack. This
sequence was repeated a dozen times after which the unsuccessful attacker
finally flew off. After every attack the babies resumed their lineup on the
mother's back. Does anyone have an explanation for the behavior of the
attacker? Did she want some of the babies? Judy

[cayugabirds-l] snipe

2011-01-18 Thread Judith W. Jones
My granddaughter and I flushed the snipe at 5:25 pm exactly where it had been
reported yesterday. In the small open area of the backwater from Fall Creek
just west of the main footbridge. If you park at SP and cross the two bridges,
turn slightly to your right and walk thru the hedge break. Scan the far
(south)side of the backwater , abt 15 yds to the small open water area.
