In addition to Kim's posting, last evening Joann and I were able to relocate
the Eurasian Wigeon near the east end of Vandyne Spoor Road among Am. Wigeon
and Gadwall.  The pair of Red-headed woodpeckers has returned to May's point
in the dead trees east of the overlook. The exact tree pointed out by France
who had found the muck land Snowy Owl earlier. Beyond the owl to the SE a
wet spot on the muck lands had a group of Caspian Terns with 2 breeding
plumage Ruddy Turnstones. Carncross Road had good numbers of both
Yellowlegs, at least 6 Dunlin, a few Least Sandpipers and 2 beautiful
breeding plumage Black-bellied Plovers. We heard American Bittern and
Virginia rail form the marshes to the north of Carncross and were able to
see 3 of the Bitterns fly up briefly as we looked south from the Marten's

[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Lake Lesser Black-backed Gull,Finger lakes airport Snowy owl,Snow Geese everywhere

   An afternoon ride to the north end of Seneca and Cayuga Lakes produced a
beautiful breeding plumage Lesser black-backed Gull at Seneca Lake Park
along with a first year Iceland Gull. A Snowy Owl was along Martin Road in
Seneca Falls on the east side of the Finger Lakes airport. Cayuga Lake was
still mostly frozen off of Cayuga Lake Sate Park but everything north of
there was full of Redhead and other expected ducks. One dark morph
Rough-legged hawk was along route 318 at Black Brook Road. 

   The phenomenon of the afternoon was the huge numbers of Snow Geese
everywhere from Macedon to Seneca Falls most between route 21 to the west
and 89 to the east; both north and south of the thruway in many corn fields.
Several fields had flocks of at least 5000 and at least one had an estimated
1. Along the thruway whenever the sun came out large flocks could be
seen against the gray background moving to the west.  Another huge flock was
along Canandaigua Road north of Macedon Center and another at Yellow-mills
and Fox Roads south of Macedon. Mike and Joann Tetlow

[cayugabirds-l] Sodus Point Gyrfalcon and Peregrine

Dave Tetlow just called to tell me that at around 10  had an immature
Dark Gyrfalcon take off from the trees on the point, fly south over Grieg
Street and disappear to the back of the bay.  It is a very uniform
brown/tawny plumaged bird.  Also note that there is an immature Anatum
Peregrine Falcon in the area originally out on the ice visible from the
point.  A dark Snowy Owl is also there (on the old barge south of Grieg
street) along with a good collection of ducks. Mike Tetlow

Nice collection of waterfowl very close to the road in Sterling
Pond-Fairhaven beach SP. See ebird checklist below. Jill Church spotted a
dark Snowy Owl close to the road on the beach on the west spit of Little
Sodus Bay. Good numbers of Long-tailed ducks and WW Scoters in the outlet

Hi All:



With the search on for a new coordinator for Region 2 for the Waterfowl
Count I was asked to fill in for this year (due to short timeline) while
helping to look for a coordinator going forward. In looking at last year I
see that each of you helped out in at least one of the sectors last year,
some of you for many years.

 



The aim date for the count this year is Sunday, January 19, with the
usual January 18-26 as possibilities in case of really bad weather or
personal scheduling problems. Right now it looks like this year may see
little open water to cover.

 



Would you please get back to me with whether you are willing and able to
do a sector this year? John Boettcher and I will do our usual Irondequoit
Bay to Bear Creek. Fairly quick response would be much appreciated so that I
can work on new people for some areas if needed. It would also be worth
thinking about trying to include some one or others to try to build up a
base of people for future years. I will send out the usual list to be filled
in as soon as I hear from you. A notice has also been placed in the Little
Gull.



Recall that we now are the counters, the DEC is NOT doing a parallel
count. In the past the information has been used as part of waterfowl
population assessments.

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma area Sandhill Cranes, Bald Eagles, Snowy Owl finale

Joann and I made a late trip to Montezuma. The main pool drive was open
so we drove it hoping to find something white on one of the dozens of
muskrat houses with no luck. 1 No. Harrier hunted the marsh and the pair of
Bald Eagles were sitting together on the edge of woods near their nest.

The partially melted Tschache pool ice drew a nice collection of 10 Bald
Eagles; some in the trees and some on the ice.

 Already close to sunset we made it to the route 31 muck lands where
Joann spotted 1 Snowy Owl among the swans at the west edge.  We didn't have
time to sort through the swans but had at least a couple close Trumpeters
among the Tundras.  We found only 1 Snow Goose.  The Sandhill Cranes made
counting them easy as the 23 flew from one part of the fields further toward
the SW corner.

 We went on to Vandyne Spoor Road (to check out more muskrat houses) and
were disappointed by how dark it was until Joann yelled look up the road.  A
Snowy Owl landed in the middle of the road in our headlights with a freshly
caught muskrat!! It lugged it off the road a ways and we left it in the dark
to enjoy its meal.  Mike Tetlow

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma White-faced and probable Glossy Ibis,Hudsonian Godwits, Brant

This evening Joann and I drove the Montezuma Wildlife drive. At 5:15 a
flock of at least 80 Brant flew south fairly low, east of the drive and
parallel to the river. 15 minutes later 17 Greater Yellowlegs followed the
same path.  A nice group of at least 300 Ring-necked Ducks were in the open
water on the main pool with 1 Redhead mixed in.

 We arrived at Benning Marsh where the Ibises were right along the
shoreline in the grassy edge amazingly undisturbed by the cars 30 feet away.
Not claiming to be experts on Ibis ID we pretty quickly agreed with Jay
McGowan's thoughts on one being White-faced and the other being Glossy. In
fact, if the sure White-faced wasn't there to influence the thought process
the other would certainly be called a Glossy by its field marks. For those

 Moving on to Knox-Marcellus Marsh at sunset things had changed a lot
since Doug Daniels' post from the morning.  We quickly found 2 Hudsonian
Godwits among the 40 Greater and 1 Lesser Yellowlegs along with 15 Dunlin.
The Snow Goose flock just got up and flew toward the potato fields so we
could not look for the Ross's Goose. The pelicans were there but "only" 7
Sandhill Cranes.  The Trumpeter Swan numbers had grown to10 and we watched
the dozen Great Egrets fly off toward Tschache pool.

[cayugabirds-l] Lake Road Sodus Golden Eagle, Pine Siskins. Montezuma area shorebirds, White Pelicans-no godwits.

This afternoon Joann and I walked some trails at Camp Beechwood on Lake
Road in Sodus. The highlight there was 2 Pine Siskins flying out of the tall
White Pines at the east entrance. Further east along Lake Road just west of
the village of Sodus Point an Eagle soaring with a Red-tailed Hawk held a
deeper dihedral and had a shorter head projection than the 2 Balds we had
already seen.  Locking the brakes we had a great look at a beautiful
immature Golden Eagle moving east.  At Sodus Point we had a Merlin fly up to
the Cottonwood tree at the parking lot and 3 Black-bellied Plovers on the
rocks on the inside of the east breakwall.

   Moving south along route 89 just south of the Montezuma Audubon Center on
the east side of the road is Colvin Marsh which held at least 24 Wilson's
Snipe and the following ebird list:

scanned Knox-Marcellus Marsh and the only shorebirds we picked out were
approximately 60 Greater Yellowlegs.  The 2 White Pelicans were still
present even as the Snow Goose flock is building up to a couple hundred.

[cayugabirds-l] Large flock ofBlack-bellied Plovers, Wilson's phalarope Montezuma NWR Knox-Marsellus & Puddler Marshes3

  We spent quite some time searching through the huge numbers of Dunlin,
Semi-palmated Plovers and Peep at the Main Pool and the so called Kipp
Island field.(The refuge people call that Jackson South.) The only
highlights were 1 Short-billed Dowitcher, 1 Black-bellied Plover and 1 Ruddy
Turnstone flushed by a beautiful adult Peregrine Falcon on the main pool.
We had no luck finding the Ibis or the previously reported Phalarope.
   We decided to check Knox-Marcellus for ducks and found the only shorebird
in the NW corner and it was a Wilson's Phalarope.  A few minutes later
(around 4pm) a large flock of Black-bellied Plovers totaling at least 110
approached from the South, circled the marsh for a few minutes and continued
off to the North. A beautiful flock of black and white birds in perfect

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Glossy Ibis, White-rumped Sandpiper

Among the large number of Dunlin, Semipalmated Plovers and Least Sandpipers
on the main pool mudflats there were 5 Short-billed Dowitchers and 1
White-Rumped Sandpiper.  A Glossy Ibis flew in from the May's Point
direction circled the mudflats but did not land and flew off over the canal
to the NE.  We had no luck with the Wilson's Phalarope from the day before.

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Least Fly, Cerulean Warbler, Black Tern, Wilson's Phalarope

This afternoon at the Montezuma visitor center we had our FOY Least
Flycatcher and Cerulean Warbler. 2 Black Terns were hunting Tschache Pool.
Thanks to those who gave the info about the Wilson's Phalarope at Carncross
Road to Judy at the visitor center we spent more time searching through the
corn stalks and found this beautiful breeding female bird among a dozen
Lesser Yellowlegs. About 30 American Pipits and a Vesper Sparrow were
nearby. A larger flock of Yellowlegs that included a couple Greaters flew up
farther back and landed hidden in the corn stubble so hope the phalarope

about it and Jay McGowan and crew for getting us to the right spot. The last
we saw, it was by itself in the Red Cedars at the north end of East Lake
Street just before the gate between the last two lanes on the right.  Drive
in to just past the museum, turn right and go straight to just before the

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Cattle Egrets, Semi. Plovers, Co. Yellowthroat, Peregrines

  Today the 3 Cattle Egrets were still at the Goose Haven field on the east
side route 89 north of 5 and 20 but only visible from the very north end of
the field as they were behind the berm. 1 Common Yellowthroat was at the
Tschasche pool observation tower with GC Kinglets.  2 Semipalmated Plovers,
2 Greater yellowlegs and about 120 Dunlin were at Knox-Marcellus Marsh from
East Road.  The Snow Geese are finally building up to several hundred but
all were back at Puddler's and we did not go down Towpath Road to check for
Ross' Goose.

   On the way there a Peregrine Falcon was pursuing a Ring-billed gull over
the NYS Thruway near Manchester.  We saw 4 passes before they were out of
sight.  Another Peregrine hunted the ducks at Armitage Road with more
success. A third was in the dead trees at May's point.  Mike and Joann

[cayugabirds-l] RBA Montezuma Trip Highlights

Highlights from today's Montezuma trip included 2 American Golden Plovers, 2
Sanderlings, 2 Snipe and 2 Dunlin at the shorebird flats along the main pool
drive.  At Tschache pool playing a Chickadee mobbing tape in the east side
scrub drew out 2 Orange-crowned Warblers and 1 Wilson's Warbler.  From East
Road overlooking Knox-Marcellus Marsh there were 8 Sandhill Cranes, 1
Black-crowned Night Heron, 6 Snow Geese,(including 2 Blue Morph) and 5
Black-bellied Plovers. The American Avocet could be seen at Puddler's Marsh.
2 Peregrine Falcons flushed the few shorebirds there and later were joined
by a third swooping acrobatically through a cloud of Starlings in the

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Hudsonian Godwits

This afternoon around 4:30, 4 Hudsonian Godwits were at the Visitor Center
just west of the viewing deck.  These are presumably the same 4 that have
been reported at Puddler's Marsh as others had no luck with them there all
afternoon. I hope they stay as they were very close and a lot easier to get
to than down Towpath road.  The 1 American Avocet was still at Puddler's
marsh in the evening. A Peregrine Falcon flushed all of the hundred or so
shorebirds from Knox-Marcellus marsh in the evening.  They all flew south
and only a few yellowlegs returned in the next hour.  Mike Tetlow

This afternoon Joann and I decided to go to Montezuma. After driving the
main pool and finding water and quite a few shorebirds at Benning Marsh (but
nothing unusual)   Except for a bathing Merlin  We moved onto Towpath Road
and struck out on the Yellow-crowned Night Heron. Moving to East Road we
failed to find the Curlew Sandpiper or any phalaropes. We were, however
rewarded when Joann noticed a smaller white heron coming out of the purple
loosestrife. It lifted its head and jumped up onto the vegetation so we and
3 other observers could easily see all the field marks of an imm Little Blue
Heron. After a few minutes we watched it fly off to the north (Wayne County)
where we hope it spent the night with plans to return tomorrow.

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma, Knox-Marcellus Marsh

Expecting a few shorebirds lingering around Puddler's Marsh we were very
surprised to see extensive mudflats on the western edge of Knox-Marcellus
marsh.  Large numbers of herons, ducks and shorebirds viewed in perfect
evening light from East Road.  Someone also cut some openings for viewing
along Towpath Road so morning viewing should be pretty good before heat
shimmer.  In addition to the list below from there, the shorebird flats on
the wildlife drive had 1 Greater and 13 Lesser Yellowlegs plus 13 Least
Sandpipers.  The only Solitary sandpiper was in the swale in the right at
the start of the wildlife drive.

 This afternoon/evening Joann and I birded the Montezuma area.  Some
highlights include 2 White-rumped Sandpipers and 2 Semipalmated Plovers from
Benning Marsh.  10 Ruddy Ducks, 12 Redhead, 1 Black Duck, 1 Blue-winged
Teal, 11 Black Terns, 3 Green Herons, 1 Least Bittern and 1 Yellow-throated
Vireo calling constantly at Tschache pool. Puddler's Marsh still had 190
Semipalmated Sandpipers, 3 White-rumped Sandpipers, 3 Dunlin, 2 Ruddy
Turnstones, 4 Semipalmated Plovers, 24 Green-winged Teal, 2 Am. Wigeon, 2
Gadwall,  12 Northern Shovelers and 2 Trumpeter Swans.  Finishing at VanDyne
Spoor Road there were at least 5 Black-crowned Night Herons, 2 American
Bitterns, 6 Black Terns, Pied-billed Grebes with young and American Coot
with 6 babies.  The woods there had Veery, Wood Thrush, Scarlet Tanager,
Cerulean Warbler and Ovenbird and a Barred Owl that came right out to my
hooting at 7:30 and started a conversation with another and possibly a

[cayugabirds-l] Sodus Point- King Eider, Wolcott- Common Raven, Some Montezuma

Around 1pm today we had the/a female King Eider at the mouth of the outlet
at Sodus Bay right near a Red-necked Grebe.  There were still large numbers
of Long-tailed Ducks just visible through the fog.  Fishing boats flushed
the eider to the east side of the east pier and out of sight.  Further along
in our travels we had a Common Raven flying north along Route 89 two miles
south of Wolcott. Carncross Road in the Montezuma complex had 11 lingering
Snow Geese.  Morgan Road had 5 Trumpeter Swans plus 2 more along Savannah
Spring Lake Road. Knox Marcellus Marsh had 83 Common Mergansers and 28 Ruddy
Ducks.  Good numbers of Ring-necked ducks, GW Teal, No. Shoveler, Gadwall

[cayugabirds-l] Saturday Cayuga St Park, Lower lake road

Sorry for the late post but yesterday afternoon along Lower lake Road up to
Cayuga Lake State park there was a great waterfowl show.  1500+ Tundra
swans, 3000 Snow Geese(2 Blue), 2000 Canada geese, 1 Cackling Goose, 120
Pintail, 30 Am Wigeon, several Gadwall and Hooded Mergansers, 35 Common
Mergansers and plenty of Mallards and Blacks.  The swans were calling
constantly.  We looked hard for the Eurasian Wigeon previously reported
there with no luck.  I had read that the Bald Eagles were at mud lock but
didn't get that one was actually sitting on the nest already!

 

Up at Montezuma there were another 300 Tundra Swans on Knox Marcellus and 2
Trumpeter Swans alone on Tschache Pool. 4 No Harriers were visible from the

[cayugabirds-l] Fairhaven to Sodus Bay- Trumpeter Swan, King Eider

 Today Sterling pond in Fairhaven SP was mostly open with 4 Hooded
Mergansers and 6 Ring-necked Ducks being the highlights.  Just like the
pairs of Canada geese at just about every pond, iced over or not, 2
Trumpeter Swans were on a small pond at the corner of Larkin Road and
Cemetery road in Wolcott.

Large numbers of Redhead, Greater Scaup and White-winged Scoters were
spread out from Sodus Point to Eagle Island with lesser numbers of Long
Tailed Ducks, Common Mergansers, Lesser Scaup, Canvasback and Coot. 6
Gadwall were south of the Ridge Road bridge on the SE edge of the bay.  

Even though the scoters were all in the bay, the female King Eider was
still close in the outlet opposite the parking lot with the large
concentration of Long-tailed ducks.  At 4pm,  4 Common Loons that had been
scattered around the bay swam and dove their way out to the lake for the

Calling Brad Carlson to tell him of a female King Eider we found at
Sodus Point, he told us we were 2 hours behind the times.  It was against
the east breakwall right near the south end.  No Barrow's Goldeneye for us
today either.  A female Black Scoter was the only other special bird.  Most
of Friday's Greater Scaup and Redhead were gone and there were less Common
Goldeneye.

Good numbers of Goldeneye and Long-tailed Duck were at the Little Sodus
Bay Outlet with 3 Ring-necked Ducks being the highlight.  1 Northern Shrike

[cayugabirds-l] No Snowy Owl, MZ Tundra Swans, Cacking Goose

Joann and I didn't have any luck with the Snowy Owl at the Waterloo
Prem. Outlet late this morning.  We drove and scanned around the inside, the
outside service road and from the elevated thruway overpass on the road on
the west side.  We did not check the north/south roads.

From the main pool overlook at Montezuma we counted 800 sleeping Tundra
Swans. There were actually probably 20-30 more hidden behind each other.  1
Cackling Goose was among the 2000 Canada Geese, Mallards and Black Ducks. 1
adult Bald Eagle was out near the main pool nest tree now missing its nest.
3 Immature eagles sparred at the north end of the main pool. (The drive is
closed).  The pair of Eagles at the Route 89 Route 31 junction at the muck
lands were both on the nest working.  The muck lands were mostly frozen with
1 Canada goose. The only Snow Goose we saw was in the canal at May's point.

1 Rough-legged Hawk and 1 No.Harrier flew over the Van Dyne Spoor Road

[cayugabirds-l] No. Pintail, Seneca Lakes SP 12-27; SE Owl,Van Dyne Spoor Rd 12-26

There were 11 No. Pintail with Blacks and Mallards along the shoreline at
Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva today.  A nice group of about 60 Common
Goldeneye were offshore. Heavy waves, rain and constant diving prevented
study of a rounder headed female with a fairly extensive yellow tip to the
bill.  Probably a young female common but worth looking at in calmer water.

 

Yesterday at 5 pm a single Short-eared owl was feeding 100 yards east of the
woods on the north side of Van Dyne Spoor Road at Montezuma. 2 Great-horned
Owls called across the canal form the east end   - Mike Tetlow

[cayugabirds-l] Fairhaven SP,Sodus Point and Maxwell Creek Shorebirds

Today Dominic Sherony and I went in pursuit of Purple Sandpipers reported by
others at Fairhaven State Park and Sodus Point.  On the weekend 3 Purple
Sandpipers were reported by Chris Wood and Jessie Barry found along the
inside of the east jetty at Little Sodus Bay.  We were able to find 2 of
them. A first year Glaucous Gull was on the west pier. Good numbers of
lingering puddle ducks were in the park on Sterling pond listed in the ebird
report below. 

At Sodus Point on Sunday the Purple Sandpiper count on the bay side of the
east jetty was 5 in the morning, found by Dominic; then 7 in the afternoon
with the addition of 1 Sanderling and 1 Dunlin by Jay McGowan.  Monday, Dave
Tetlow found 9 Purple Sandpipers and 1 Dunlin.  Today Dominic and I found
those 9 Purple Sandpipers, the Dunlin and the Sanderling plus the birds in
the ebird list below.

At Maxwell Creek as viewed from the east shore we found 5 killdeer where
Dave had found 10 previously.

Other highlights were 1 Northern. Shrike and 3 Red-winged Blackbirds along
route 104A near Fairhaven and 2 Common Grackles along route 350 in Walworth.

[cayugabirds-l] SodusBay-Montezuma, Knox Marcellus Purple Martin

 Joann and I birded Sodus Point down to Montezuma this afternoon.  3
Brant on the beach was the only highlight at Sodus Point.  Several groups of
Pied-billed Grebes were scattered around the bay.  A nice flock of 25 Coot
were at the south end of the bay near the Ridge Road Bridge.

 

 We also saw the Hudsonian Godwit at the Montezuma Visitor Center around
3pm.  A Merlin attempted to catch Goldfinches there as well.  3 Wilson's
Snipe and 2 Lesser Yellowlegs were at Benning Marsh as a small mudflat is
developing there. Ring-necks, Pintail, Wigeon and Gadwall numbers are up on
the main pool, but bad light discouraged a Eurasian Wigeon hunt.  Only 3
Great Egrets were left at May's Point.  Dave Wheeler reported a Stilt
Sandpiper and Dunlin at Puddler's Marsh along with the Avocet. 

 At 5pm a group of about 30 Tree Swallows over Knox-Marcellus Marsh
included 1 Barn Swallow and were joined briefly by a presumed female Purple
Martin which flew off high to the SE.  (We don't know the other Martin
species so experts be alert (although everything about it looked like a
Purple Martin).  A probable Bank Swallow did a quick flip that looked to
show the neck band but glided away without a wing beat to be sure.   Mike

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Avocet +, Sodus Point RuddyTturnstones+

This afternoon Joann and I did a Sodus Point, Montezuma loop.

   At Sodus Point only a few Caspian Terns remain on the pier although
500+ DC Cormorants lined the east breakwall. The beach was empty but the
small area of rocks on the south side of the breakwall had 3 Ruddy
Turnstones, 1 Black-bellied Plover, 5 Sanderlings, 1 Semi Plover, 1 Semi
Sandpiper, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Common Merganser and 2 American Pipits.

  Knox-Marcellus Marsh is higher than last weekend with 2 Black-bellied
Plovers up to their chests taking baths. 2 Sandhill Cranes were out in the
smartweed.  Most of last week's Green-winged Teal seemed to be at May's
Point.

  As noted previously the Am. Avocet was at Puddler's marsh.  HOWEVER,
without dike access it was nearly impossible to see.  It was in the far NW
cove of Puddler's near the breakwall and on the south mud edge only visible
from the last opening before the turnaround on Towpath Road. 8 Black-bellied
Plovers flew in and landed nearby and we never saw them again.  The most
interesting bird there was among the 7 Snow Geese and was an apparent
intergrade adult White and Blue Morph.  The plumage was similar to an adult
Blue Ross' Goose but more extensive white in the body and darker in the
wings.  A plumage I have never seen.

 Very few birds at Larue's lagoon and the water is high again at Benning
Marsh so no shorebirds there. A Peregrine was in a dead tree at North Spring
Pool.   May's Point pool had the largest number of shorebirds, mostly
Pectoral and Least sandpipers with the highlight being 1 Stilt Sandpiper.

This afternoon Puddler's marsh was mostly the same as has been reported
except 1 molting adult Black-bellied Plover.

 

At the visitor center around 3:30 the 6 Least and 2 Semipalmated Sandpipers
were suddenly joined by (counting by tens) 350 Least and 300 Semipalmated
Sandpipers plus a few Pectorals. I could not believe that after scanning
these birds carefully I couldn't find even a possible Western or Baird's.
It would have been nice to at least see Dave Wheeler's bird which by
posture, molt and bill looks like a Western to me (but I'm terrible with
photos).  I saw my first obvious fresh juvenile Lesser Yellowlegs today.

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma this evening Wilson's and Red-necked Phalaropes at Puddlers, Great Egrets at Mays' Point

Thanks to Gary Chapin's report of a Red-necked Phalarope at Puddler's
Marsh at the end of Towpath Road we went to check it out this evening from 6
til 8 pm.  Most

of the birds were in the most distant eastern portion.  Joann found the
hoped for Phalarope; the only thing is that this one was a Juvenile Wilson's
Phalarope.  After searching through the 800ish Lesser Yellowlegs, 25 Greater
Yellowlegs, 15 Stilt Sandpipers, 1 Semi-palmated Plover, 30 Killdeer, 30
Pectoral Sandpiper, 20 Semi-palmated Sandpipers, 300ish Least Sandpipers, 10
Spotted Sandpipers, 1 Baird's Sandpiper and 1 Short-billed Dowitcher she
found the molting adult Red-necked Phalarope.  Only 2 Black Terns were on
the flats and 8 Immature Bald Eagles harassed the gulls and Caspian Terns.
We heard Sandhill Cranes call form far to the west beyond Knox-Marcellus but
never found them.

 Earlier, totaling between the Visitor Center pond and the shorebird
flats along the drive there were 53 Lesser Yellowlegs, 15 Greater
Yellowlegs, 3 Solitary Sandpipers and 2 Snipe (in the taller grass at the
shorebird flats).  Caspian Terns dive bombed an adult bald Eagle protecting
the 2 Juveniles at the visitor center.  Only a couple Purple martins
remained around the houses there.

 Ending at May's Point after sunset 25 Great Egrets had gathered tight
together in the deeper water in the middle of the eastern end of the pool.
Even with much flapping and strutting we could not see and wing tags.  Mike

Herons until they totaled over 120.

In addition to the above the Clay-colored Sparrow was singing on and off at
King Road even at 4pm.

 

They have flooded the visitor center pool and it already attracted 30
Killdeer, 1 Solitary Sand., 12 lesser and I Greater Yellowlegs last evening.

 

Even though all 21 Great Egrets were in the air at once no wing tags were
visible.

Comments: Silent on arrival except calling BG Gnatcatcher and Veery.
Softly whistling Screech Owl drew responses in turn from the Ba

[cayugabirds-l] Presumed Glossy Ibis Montezuma fly over

 This evening Joann and I visited Montezuma.  The main pool was very
high with very few birds, however, as we drove parallel to the Thruway
opposite May's Point pool Joann picked out a dark Ibis in flight.  We
watched the bird for 10 minutes circling over May's Point then heading
toward East road then circling back and almost landing 2-3 times.  It
continued to circle but then flew out over Tschache Pool and disappeared
along the tree line to the NW.  When we got to Tschache we saw the high
water and no shoreline habitat so it either landed way out in the back or
continued on.  Only a slight dull greenish tinge could be seen on the back
and it was always too far to see any face markings.  I would assume Glossy
Ibis especially with the South winds early last week and the Snowy Egrets
being reported along the lake plain.  I don't know if that assumption is
correct.  We ran up to Armitage Road and drove around the flooded closed
road sign to get down to the fields.  There was some muddy shoreline but no
ibis only a small flyby flock of Lesser Yellowlegs.

 We were surprised by the number of Bonaparte's Gulls on the far edge of
Tschache, probably 50 and a similar number later at Carncross Road where
there were still great numbers of puddle ducks and 2 American Bitterns
calling on the north side of the road.

 Mays' Point and Knox-Marcellus Marsh each had at least 40 Ruddy Ducks
and each had a pair of Trumpeter Swans.  The only other shorebirds were 2
Greater Yellowlegs at Carncross Road where there were 3 more Trumpeter

[cayugabirds-l] FW: Osprey- Knox-Marcellus Marsh

  Yesterday afternoon, while scanning the large numbers of No.Pintail
and Canada Geese at Knox-Marcellus marsh from East Road at Montezuma Joann
picked out an Osprey soaring directly above us then off to the SE.  2 Tree
swallows and a pair of Wood Ducks were there also.  At around 4:30 all the
Snow Geese at the rte. 31 muck lands lifted off and about 5000 (basically 10
groups of 500) flew west over us leaving probably 10-15M landing back on the
muck lands. We couldn't see any smaller geese or White-fronted but there
were about 40 "Blue" Geese mixed in.  

 Large numbers of waterfowl especially Ring-necked Ducks were on the
Northern Complex flooded areas and ponds.  

 Up at the East Bay Marsh Unit along East Bay Road in Huron there were 5
Great Blue Herons working on their nests.  First day of spring!!  Mike and

 p.s. extensive mudflats developing on Tschache Pool with 1 killdeer ( I
don't know why they are drawing it down).

[cayugabirds-l] Mud Lock Bald Eagles ? Old Montezuma. Canandaigua Barrow's Goldeney

On Friday we stopped by the Mud Lock Eagles nest and could not see any
head on the nest or an Eagle in any nearby trees.  Hopefully it was just
sitting very low in the nest. Has anyone had better luck or have they
failed?  We also have not seen any adults near the nest north of the Rtes 89
and 31 junctions.  Our Montezuma observations Friday were about the same as
everyone has reported except for a total of 7 Rough-legged Hawks (4 over
Main Pool and May's Point and 3 in the Morgan/Carncross Road area).  There
were a total of 15 Bald Eagles on the ice at Tschache Pool alone.

 While I'm typing I might as well mention that there has been a male
Barrow's Goldeneye( previously reported by others on Genesee Birds) at Deep
Run Park on the east side of Canandaigua Lake which was still there today.
It was not easy to see as it was diving regularly and among a large raft of
commoner ducks but once located it gave great views.  A lifer for 3 other

Highlights that Joann and I found covering those areas today are as follows:

 

-Tundra Swans: 8 Sodus Bay, 34 Savannah Spring Lake Rd at Van Dyne Spoor
Rd., 108 Knox-Marcellus Marsh and at least 2000 at the north end of  Cayuga
lake

   Mostly on the ice north of the railroad. (counted to 200 in one
binocular view and moved 21 views wide.).  We would have loved to have the
time to do a scope count!

-Trumpeter Swan:  2 Savannah Spring Lake Road on the ice at the usual spot
east of Van Dyne Spoor and west of Morgan Road.

-No. Pintail: 3 Sodus Bay

- Am. Widgeon: 22 Sodus Bay, 40 North end Cayuga Lake

-Gadwall: 6 Sodus Bay

-Lesser Scaup: 16 Sodus Bay

-Canvasback: 60 Sodus Bay, 150+ North end of Cayuga Lake

-all above were mixed in with several hundred Greater Scaup and Redheads at
both locations.Bald Eagles: 2 No. Montezuma complex, 9 on ice at Tsache
pool, 3 adults - -Bald Eagles: 2 No. Montezuma complex, 9 on ice at Tsache
pool, 3 adults from refuge visitor center, 1 on nest at mud lock, 1adult
over NYS Thruway just W of Geneva exit.

-Rough-legged hawk: 1 Van Dyne Spoor Road. 2  from refuge visitor center.

-new nest on the very low utility pole at the very end of Van Dyne Spoor
appears to be constructed by the nearby Red-tailed Hawk(unless we just
didn't notice it in the fall
