[cayugabirds-l] Male Ruby-throated Hummingbird

2011-04-29 Thread Suzanne Henderson
At 5:45 PM today I watched a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird sit and partake of
fresh sugar-water from one of my Hummingbird feeders. The flying gems return!

I have had a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak since last Thursday(5/21), usually
dining on Safflower seeds. I have yet to hear or see a male RBGrosbeak.

Still have a few Pine Siskins, mixed in the company of beautiful
Am.Goldfinches.

Dave,
We are just off Besemer Rd, near Brooktondale! The feeder this bird used is
fairly obscure, so I believe this is a bird that has been here at least one
previous season. One year I had not yet put up a feeder at that location, and
an early returning hummer just hovered around the empty hook. I quickly moved a
feeder from a not so distant location to the empty hook, and within minutes a
h-bird was using it.

[cayugabirds-l] Female Baltimore Oriole

2011-05-03 Thread Suzanne Henderson
I know this is not the first Baltimore Oriole in the Basin, but she is the
first one I have had in my yard this season! At 6:00 PM today she was
consuming--with gusto-- sugar-water from a Hummingbird feeder. In previous
years male B.Orioles have arrived at the feeders before any females.

My first male RT Hummer arrived on 4/29, which I previously posted. Since 5/1,I
have at least a second male. I believe I also have a third male hummer, based
on the bird's behavior, which seems very uneasy, as he sometimes hovers
"nervously" while using a feeder, in comparison to the two birds I have
observed always sitting somewhat "leisurely"at a feeder for several minutes
while feeding on sugar water. Perhaps I will have to put up my third feeder
and see if I can account for 3 hummers at the same time.

Every year when they first return, the Baltimore Orioles compete with the
Hummingbirds for the "nectar", so I really should put up my third feeder.

I still have three Pine Siskins holding their own in the presence of about 15
Goldfinches. I have observed at least two pairs of Purple Finches, primarily
taking Safflower seed.

Suddenly my feeders have about 12 Pine Siskins and 8 Common Redpolls
voraciously feeding at three feeders, on Nyjer seed and Agway's Finch Delight
mix. I have not seen a Siskin or Redpoll at these feeders all winter, so I am
extremely surprised, and pleased to find them now.

Snow Goose(blue phase)

2009-08-22 Thread Suzanne Henderson
Sat afternoon -8/22- at Stewart Park was highlighted by the arrival of an adult
SNOW GOOSE in blue phase. Distinguished by his muffled call as he flew over me,
and landed in the water some distance east of me. He swam around a bit, and
worked his way west, climbed out of the water, and walked to the grassy area
just west of the tennis courts. He seemed to walk with a limp (on his right
side) but was a very speedy hiker. I do have photos if needed for
documentation.

Also of interest was a female Common Merganser, who spent a long time preening
(on a log just off shore),and then taking a nap, before swimming off North
toward the middle of the lake.

[cayugabirds-l] Fire at Montezuma

2010-04-04 Thread Suzanne Henderson
According to the Magee Fire Chief, it is estimated that more than 600 acres
have burned since about 4 AM Easter morning. The most probable cause is a
discarded cigarette! The refuge policy is to let the fire burn as long as it
does not threaten people or dwellings. News updates on CNYcental.com. Sad news
for a beautiful Sunday when Spring Migration is really on the uptick.

[cayugabirds-l] Finally a Hummer!

2010-05-06 Thread Suzanne Henderson
At 7AM today, a male RT Hummingbird was sitting on one of my H-bird
feeders...and just sipping...and sipping! Perfect way to start my day! I am
always anxious these little flying gems won't return; and I always worry even
more when I begin seeing so many other posts from folks with good sightings.
