[cayugabirds-l] Carolina wrens and D-E Juncos

[Therese O'Connor]

What a flurry of activity in my backyard ( Meadowlark Dr. near Sapsucker
woods) the last week. A pair of juncos are building a nest on my deck and a
pair of Carolina wrens apparently are building one way back in the yard.
Beaks full of grasses, etc. I've never heard so many different songs and
calls from the male wren--perched on my deck railing!

Interesting. Three weeks ago I received a "question" from ebird asking me
if I had "additional information" about a siting I had in Seattle in *2014!*
I wonder what took them so long to question my bird....strange.

Meredith,
Thank you for you dog "notes". I have seen many dogs in Sapsucker woods of
late, where the signs clearly state "no dogs". In this case, even if the
dogs are leashed, they shouldn't be there. The unleashed dog issue has
gotten worse in the past year or so based on my own walking experiences in
Monkey run and other local trails.

For what it's worth, at Mill Pond in Aurora/Union Springs today, we saw,
among the 20 or so Red Head Ducks, about 12 American Wigeons. We asked the
Audubon Center guy, Chris, who said, "yes they are still around much longer
than usual".
There were also Mallards and Hooded Mergansers.

We have also had these same birds eating our suet (with the exceptions of
chipping sparrows & siskins), but adding pileated woodpeckers, red-breasted
nuthatches. First time we've seen grackles at our feeders.

on our suet on Meadowlark Rd NE Ithaca for 2 days.

[cayugabirds-l] Northeast feeders Sapsucker woods rd.

[Therese O'Connor]

This morning 10 beautiful purple finches were at the feeders--5 males and 5
females. Two males were doing a bit of battle with their beaks. Also around
were 2 red-breasted woodpeckers--1 female and 1 male; several downy and
hairy woodpeckers and small clouds of Am goldfinches. The colors!

This morning a lovely little sharp-shinned hawk swooped upon my feeders
filled with titmice, chickadees, red and white nuthatches, but was
unsuccessful.  He waited on a near-by branch, but no little birds returned
to the feeders for a long while.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker fight to the finish

[Therese O'Connor]

Tonight we witnessed a 3-way Yellow bellied Sapsucker fight which may have
been territorial. Three sapsuckers landed on a telephone pole on Meadowlark
Rd just across the road where we were sitting on the stoop. A great
screeching and squaking fight ensued with three in a fight and two coming
out ok after  a few mintues. Then the 2 remaining fighters flew around and
around in circles at one point battling very close to the ground where my
cat across the road perked up to see what all the screeching ruckus was
about. The birds flew circles over us very close to our heads and all
around the neighbor hood. Eventually, they, or at least one, ended up on a
tree behind our house which is actually part of Sapsucker woods, and it
seems somewhat ruffled. The other bird disappeared. What an interesting
display of birds fighting.

practically my back yard.  It sounded like a cross between a Wood Thrush
and a Whip-poor- Will.  It was a deep, flute-like sound, repeating in
descending 7-8 notes, with a resonance that was really loud.   Could anyone
venture a guess as to what it might be?  It was near, flew far and called,
came closer and called--always the same song.

 We saw actual mating in an oak tree in my back yard which is very close to
Sapsucker woods. These birds have been coming to our suet feeder for

[cayugabirds-l] small hawk at Myers Park

[Therese O'Connor]

Does anyone know what kind of hawk is hanging around Myers park--creek
side? Yesterday, we saw a small (15-17") very dark brown- full striped
brown and white breast with brown tail having 3 white stripes underneath;
very dark brown crown. We thought it was either a juvenile or dark morph of
one of the smaller hawks.

[cayugabirds-l] Redpolls in Newfield, too.

Like Bill and Shirley,  we, too, had 2 redpolls at our feeder
today--feeding mostly on the ground-- with 6 junco; 2 house finch; 12
goldfinch; 2 tufted titmice; 2 nuthatches; about 6 chickadees and couple of
blue jays.

[cayugabirds-l] northern Cayuga lake

Hello all,
   In addition to the 2 "islands" of thousands of snow geese and thousands
of Cananda geese that everyone has seen just south of Cayuga State park, we
saw a identified 5 Am Black Ducks and about 40 Hooded Mergansers both male
and female.
What a fabulous area to watch so many water birds!

This IS  AMAZING –!!!

Structural engineer in action
Whether you’re a ‘bird person’ or not, this is stunning!!!  (and touching
too).
Not to detract from the sheer magic of it, but in practical terms, how MANY
trips would a bird have to make with that tiny little quantity of mud/clay
it could carry? (and how far from the nest is the source?)

If you take the construction of a “circular bowl” in your stride as
instinctive, how does the bird come up with the windbreak/entrance design
that shields the eggs/chicks from the elements and at what point in
fashioning the bowl do they start to construct it?
