[cayugabirds-l] Cerulean Warbler

2014-05-08 Thread peter wiedmann
This morning, Rick Lightbody and I walked Sapsucker woods. Around the pond,
highlights included: BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, AM. REDSTART, WOOD THRUSH,
BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and BARRED OWL; mostly viewed in the birch tree part of the
trail.
We continued across the road to the boardwalk and saw a N. WATERTHRUSH, RED
EYED VIREO, and OVENBIRD.
Then to the power-line trail: we were chasing down a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER
when a CERULEAN WARBLER came into view (complete with white throat and dark
neck-band). From the far parking lot, it was at the far end of the power-line
trail, up in a big leaf aspen tree on the airport/rt 13 side of the trail.

[cayugabirds-l] SURF SCOTERS

2014-04-27 Thread peter wiedmann
Sunday, about 10 am, East Shore park, I spotted what I thought was a pair of
white-winged scoters far off shore to the north west. I noticed an oval white
spot on the back of the male's head. With the help of a birder from NW Pa., I
learned that they were SURF SCOTERS.

There were dozens of SWALLOWS ( n. rough-winged, tree, and barn) acrobatically
feeding just off shore in the steady northern wind. Two CASPIAN TERNS were
flying up the lake. Also seen: some DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, a few RING
BILLED GULLS. Otherwise, not much.
