[cayugabirds-l] Common redpolls on Mt Pleasant

2021-01-18 Thread Eveline V. Ferretti
A lovely flock on Mount Pleasant this morning. Right by the road On the fields
approaching the Mineah intersection. They were in a calm and convivial state
(please excuse the anthropomorphism!), letting me get close enough —despite my
underpowered binocs & having my 95 lb dog in tow—to observe the beautiful
patterns of their wing & back feathers up close for the first time. A real
treat.

They have since flown and I could not relocate them, but it's worth a heads-up
to birders to check these trees and other redpoll natural foods, such as other
alder species, birches, plus weedy areas of fields. There are still a few
redpolls being seen occasionally in the fields along Mt Pleasant Rd but they
are nowhere near as consistent as they were there 2 years ago.

I will post some video when I get the chance to process it.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Redpolls, Corning, NY

2012-12-25 Thread Jeff Holbrook
To Those Interested,

Today was the first day I've seen Common Redpolls (CORE) at my feeders in
East Corning! We had at least 5! I really can't remember the last time I had
COREs at my feeders. Definitely pre-eBird! It has probably been since 1979
or 80! We've been having a lot of Pine Siskins (PISI) for at least a month
now, usually 20-30 at a time. They are fun to watch. Having the COREs here
today was a great Christmas present!

Kind Regards,

Jeff Holbrook

Our redpoll count just doubled from yesterday: we now have TWO. Ta Da!

About 17 siskins on niger feeders. When they left, the resident goldfinches
returned, about 18 of them. Hard to count 'em when they outnumber the
perches on the feeders.

The snow here (1 to2 inches) has made this a very birdy morning. We must
have been very good this year, to be so rewarded.

Hi all,

I checked out Bob McG's redpoll spot (below) this morning between 9:30 and
10:30 but saw no redpolls. Also cruised many of the residential roads in the

there either. Hope others have better luck later today.

Bob McGuire just called me to report a flock of 40 COMMON REDPOLLS (but no
Hoary Redpolls) in the birches in the triangle of land between North Triphammer
Road, Hillcrest Road, and Triphammer Terrace in the Town of Lansing. He thinks
they may be there awhile.

2012-12-08 Thread david nicosia
We are seeing lots of redpolls down here in the southern tier too.

It is interesting how first it was waves of siskins, then evening grosbeaks and
crossbills

and now redpolls! what's next? pine grosbeaks...

6 Common Redpolls at our feeders in Brooktondale this morning. All

[cayugabirds-l] Common Redpolls!

2011-01-02 Thread Marie P Read
Not a Snow Bunting to be seen on Mt Pleasant for yesterday's count, nor did I
see them today (yet), but I was consoled by having several gorgeous male Common
Redpolls at the feeder just now. Cool!

I'll reiterate Dave Nutter's plea that anyone seeing Snow Bunting (even just
one!) yesterday, should post because it was a species missed on the count
despite the huge number seen in recent days. (I last saw them 31 December in
late afternoon on Mt Pleasant)

[cayugabirds-l] Common Redpolls in Brooktondale

2010-12-29 Thread Sandy Podulka
8 Common Redpolls showed up today at our feeders in
Brooktondale---and on our Project FeederWatch day. And it's a good
thing, because all the other birds we've been watching all week seem
to have evaporated with the warmer weather.

We had a little excitement a few days ago when a Long-tailed Weasel
(in its white plumage with black tip to tail) showed up in our
shed. It was very curious and gave us great looks, even though my
husband had unknowingly dumped out its cache of 5 dead mice in a
bucket a few days previously, not realizing they belonged to someone.
It apparently accepted his apologetic offering of a couple of chunks
of suet in exchange.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Redpolls

2010-12-23 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
We were planning on driving out of state last night but circumstances
prevented our planned departure, luckily, because we were greeted this
morning with 2 Common Redpolls mixed in with the Goldfinches at our feeders
this morning. I hope they show up at everyone else's feeders as well, makes
a nice Christmas present.
Happy Holidays and Good Birding everyone,
 Jeff
