[cayugabirds-l] Coopers Plains Black Vultures
Hi All. Just saw 4 Black Vultures over a field along NY 415 on the east side of Cooper’s Plains, Steuben County. They were east of the intersection of 415 and Main Street; they then flew south to the ridge line on the south side of the Cohocton River. [cayugabirds-l] Coopers Hawk.
Just now a Cooper's Hawk flew across the window at less than 10 feet away! Looks like a day of the raptors. About an hour ago the Red-tailed was scaring away hordes of starlings that were in front of the green houses on Tower road. They flew in nice patterns as the hawk mingled among them. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Coopers Hawk.
I always look up in the big old cherry tree behind my house when I leave each morning, still missing the flock of Crows that used to frequent my yard, until they got chased away by another flock. This is where they used to perch, waiting for me to put peanuts out for them. A new flock, probably the ones that chased them, is starting to get used to my yard now, and when I came out I was thrilled to see two Crows up there. No wait, one Crow at the very top and slightly below and to the left, a Coopers Hawk. Both were completely silent and still. Facing each other and so close. I watched for a minute and then ran in to get a camera. Too late. I wish I would have just stayed and watched. Interesting dual. [cayugabirds-l] Coopers hawk
Several days before Xmas, a friend of ours brought over the remains of a deer torso he had shot. We threw it on top of a large brushpile in the yard to keep the coyotes from dragging it off. So far it has been a boon to our 4 YARD CROWS who have spent some of their daytime activities pulling strips of meat and chiseling off hunks of suet which they then eat or stash in the neighborhood. Today Susie excitedly called my attention to very large COOPERS HAWK perched on the carcass and biting off suet chunks. It fed for about 10 minutes. It was the largest of this species that either one of us remembers seeing; it appeared the size of a red-tailed hawk. Susie got a picture of it as it flew off which shows why they can move so fast-the amount of extended wing surface appears to dwarf the rest of the bird. [cayugabirds-l] Coopers and Red-tailed Hawks—overall attack success rates?
New Year's Greetings! Similar to Nancy Cusumano's report, a Coopers Hawk(s) has also been stalking my feeder birds on and off lately. I live across from the CU agriculture fields on Hanshaw Road with the greater Sapsucker Woods—Briarwood and the Sapsucker Woods Sanctuary— behind our house. Excellent mixed-hawk habitat. I've seen a Coopers Hawk swoop by our feeder area between 1-2:30 pm this past Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday. We've had mild lake-effect snow for over a week, and the hawk only visits during the brief periods of calm. It's effective at instantly scaring the large flock of finches and other resident cardinals, chickadees, juncos, jays, etc., but I don't think it's caught anything. Also on Sunday afternoon, a Red-tailed Hawk was prancing around the deep snow, hunting rodents in the backyard feeder area. It appeared that the hawk could hear the creatures scurrying beneath the snow's surface but it could not get a talon on one. These sightings made me wonder how successful Coopers and Red-tails are at winter hunting? What is their attack success rate (effort:kill ratios)? I found a 2003 article entitled *HUNTING BEHAVIOR AND DIET OF COOPER'S HAWKS: AN URBAN VIEW OF THE SMALL-BIRD-IN-WINTER PARADIG* by Timothy C. Roth II and Steven L. Lima. The Condor 105(3):474-483. 2003. http://www.bioone.org/doi/abs/10.1650/7219?cookieSet=1prevSearch=journalCode=cond Of the eight Cooper's Hawks (7 female, 1 male) radio-tracked during the winters of 1999–2001, Roth and Lima observed 179 attacks, 35 of which were successful, for an overall attack success rate of 20%. What's the rate in other COHA populations? In Red-tails? Other hawks? I've got to run but I'll search Google and the BNA later. Does anyone know of relevant studies? I haven't examined this topic before. Best of Birding in 2010! [cayugabirds-l] Coopers
Sunday a little after 4pm, I was on Seneca St. at Rte 13 waitng for the red light to change. On the NE corner there is a house with some large yew bushes (or other evergreens). On top of one of the yews there was a COOPERS HAWK trying to get at something inside the bush. The light changed so I don't know the ending, but it was interesting to see the hawk hard at work right next to all that traffic.
