Re: [cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn this morning

2014-05-20 Thread Dave Nutter
Ann Mitchell & I were at the Hawthorns from 7:30 to 10:30am. We missed the
Philadelphia Vireos and Cape May Warbler, much to Ann's disappointment, and the
Magnolia Warblers, but we did hear and see CANADA WARBLER and see
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER and BAY-BREASTED WARBLER in the middle and hear (and
Ann saw) WILSON'S WARBLER in the south central hawthorns. We also heard a WOOD
THRUSH and saw a BROWN THRASHER among others.

The Yellow-bellied Flycatcher was silent and briefly seen but beautiful and
easy to ID: all yellowish green with more green above and more yellow below and
no gray/white anywhere nor any contrast at edges of throat. Even the complete
eye-ring and double wingbars were yellow instead of white.

[cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn this morning

2014-05-20 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
We were at Hawthorn from 8:00 until 9:30 this morning. The birds seemed
more active than when I was there last week, but we didn't find any new
species than others have reported in recent days. TENNESSEE WARBLERS and
GRAY CATBIRDS were singing everywhere pretty much the whole time we were
there.

Highlights included a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER often singing in the open on the
east edge near the northeast corner, several vocal and active BLACKPOLL
WARBLERS in the northeast and southwest corners; and two active and
somewhat vocal PHILADELPHIA WARBLERS readily visible in the Hawthorns near
the main path in the northeast corner. Two MAGNOLIA WARBLERS were very
vocal early on but more difficult to see as they seemed to stay on the
other side of dense leaves. I had a brief look at silent CAPE MAY WARBLER,
and we glimpsed at least one silent SWAINSON'S THRUSH.

[cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn this morning

2012-05-12 Thread Anne Marie Johnson

This morning Tim and I went to Hawthorn expecting to find little and
were pleasantly surprised. The numbers were low, but we found a nice
mix of warblers, all in the NE corner, mostly down the slope of the
ravine, and all singing persistently: Canada, Northern Parula
(2), Nashville, Tennessee, Common Yellowthroat, Magnolia (further
west along the ravine), and Yellow. We were able to get great
looks at all except the Yellow and Common Yellowthroat, which we
didn't try to track down. Further along the ravine we found a Black-throated
Green. Others we ran into said they found a Black-throated
Blue. We heard Wood Thrush, Least Flycatcher, and Red-eyed
Vireo but found no other thrushes, vireos, or flycatchers.

[cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn this morning

2011-05-21 Thread Nari Mistry

Gin & I birded in the hawthorn orchard this morning, starting at 7:30am.
Some of the notables:
--Tenessee warblers singing everywhere, finally got our sights on some
in the dense foliage. The best views I had was in the open at the south
edge of the woods, looking in from the field. (This is where there are
some reliably every year).

-- Blackpoll warblers, everywhere, lots singing. !0 in one big tree.
-- Canada warblers, heard several, saw one finally, in the company of
Bob McGuire, Dave Nutter, Susan Danskin, and others, near the middle.

-- Bay-breasted male & female, again near the south edge.
-- Magnolia male, near the south edge.
-- Blue-winged warbler
-- Willow flycatcher (heard)
-- Two Least flycatchers (heard)
-- etc.
Pleasant morning -- squish, squish...

[cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn this morning

2010-05-07 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
When I arrived at 8:00, the orchard was hopping, but I didn't come
across anything new. Interestingly, I heard no Black-throated Green
Warblers. Most of the activity was along the eastern edge today. Here
are the highlights:

Yellow-rumped Warblers--still lots of them
Northern Waterthrush
Nashville Warblers--at least 3
Tennessee Warblers--at least 2
Common Yellowthroats
Yellow Warblers
Northern Parulas (singing a variety of songs)--at least 2
Black-and-White Warbler--1
American Redstart--1
Magnolia Warbler--1
Black-throated Blue Warbler--1
Blackburnian Warbler--probable, heard only
Black-billed Cuckoo--called frequently over the hour I was there
Wood Thrush--sang once briefly
