[cayugabirds-l] Little Blue Heron, Yates Co.

2021-07-20 Thread Jay McGowan
Reuben just called to give a heads-up that an egret initially reported as a
possible Snowy was refound last night and is reported to be an immature
LITTLE BLUE HERON. It's been seen across from the East View Mennonite
Church off Lakemont-Himrod Road, across from the Beardsley Road
intersection. Not sure exactly what the visibility is like, but worth
checking out if you're in the area.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Little Blue Heron vs Snowy Egret

Nice find and nice photo, Dave! The diagnostic narrow gray edge to the primary
tips showing on the far wing is gorgeous. Either species is new for the Cayuga
Lake Basin this year.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Little Blue Heron (imm) OOB

2020-08-10 Thread Jay McGowan
Thanks for posting this, John and Sue. This bird was first reported on
August 6th by Dorothy Dunlap, who mentioned first seeing it the previous
day and posted identifiable photos. I went the next morning and was able to
scope it from the viewpoint at the south end, and got some better looks by
boat. It seems to frequent the north end of that pond, often disappearing
behind the trees into the northeast corner. Here's my checklist with some
pictures:

[cayugabirds-l] Little Blue Heron vs Snowy Egret

2020-08-10 Thread Dave K
After a look at this Mornings pics, I think the bird reported as a Snowy Egret
is actually a Little Blue Heron. Dark wingtips, green legs with same color
feet, pink bill, green lores.

[cayugabirds-l] Little Blue Heron (imm) OOB

2020-08-09 Thread khmo
Ed Gates called this AM to report having seen a LBHE last evening at the
old Hanson's gravel and cement plant pond at the intersection of Rte
79/227. He left a note there and a Jared ? added the bird present this
AM, although it was not there at 0900

We went down at 1120 and found a white heron in the very far back
situated just NE of the N batch of Cattails. Without a scope it was a
small white heron. Called Ed who confirmed having scoped it and had
positive ID.

This pond is NOT in the Cayuga Lake Basin by a very short distance.

[cayugabirds-l] Little Blue Heron (Thursday), Willet and Buff-breasted today

2015-08-21 Thread Jay McGowan
A juvenile LITTLE BLUE HERON was photographed by Bob Washburn on the main
pool halfway up the first section of the Wildlife Drive at Montezuma. We
have not refound it so far this morning, but we did find a WESTERN WILLET
foraging with yellowlegs and dowitchers in the southern section of Larue's
Lagoon near the beginning of the Wildlife Drive and a BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER in the second pond along the thruway on the last section of the
drive.

[cayugabirds-l] Little Blue Heron - Monday night

2013-07-23 Thread tigger64
Stakeout of the new Great Egret roost 500 yards south of Van Dyne Spoor Rd,
MNWR, started at 7:30pm with 20 birds. Another ~20 flew in between 8:00-8:15
(these presumably from Knox-Marsellus). At 8:28pm Jim Tarolli spotted the juv.
Little Blue flying in. It was the last bird of the day and marginally visible
once landed. One really needs to see it fly in and hopefully perch atop the
brush (or at least where it lands). It was coming from the south or southwest
which could mean anywhere in the main MNWR complex.

2013-07-22 Thread Kenneth V. Rosenberg
Dave Wheeler was of course the third birder from Syarcuse I met last evening at
East Road. I watched 28 Great Egrets head north from Knox-Marcellus to roost
somewhere -- I guess you guys found the roost. Now the question is, did we miss
the LBHE among the egrets at East Road?

Nice Find!

[cayugabirds-l] Little Blue Heron Franklin's Gull

2010-09-08 Thread Leona Lauster
I looked for the Franklin's Gull for a couple hours from the towpath on this
cloudy afternoon with no luck. Then as I was leaving the sun came out so I
decided to check Knox-Marcellus from East Road and found it. I first noticed
it flying along with shorebirds that got up. I followed it with my scope and
when it landed I could see the dark cheeks.
The Little Blue Heron was at May's Point Pool this afternoon at 3:50 pm. It
was straight out from the viewing platform and then it flew to the right and
landed along the far edge. I did not see the Glossy Ibis today.
