Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rufous Hummingbird Seneca Falls

2013-10-14 Thread Jody W Enck
Hi Dave,

Really cool bird. I have very limited experience with juveniles of western
hummingbirds, but I did learn this summer that many of the western species
(including for example, broad-tailed and calliope) can show rufous flanks. In
your pictures I do see hints of rufous on the rump, which I think would clinch
it as a Rufous Hummingbird. Maybe you or others could let the rest of us less
experienced folks know what aspects from your photos help to eliminate similar
species and narrow the identification to Rufous. This kind of learning
experience is cheaper for me than hopping a flight out west!

Thanks for posting you find.

[cayugabirds-l] Rufous Hummingbird on 1 November

2012-11-01 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Thanks to Marty and Mary Jean for their hospitality and the lovely young rufous
lady
that was present at 1400 today. This bird feeds on the clock! Besides using the
feeder it was hawking insects from the clothesline.

Went on to the Sheldrake area where we saw numerous Common Loon on the water,
the
first Buffleheads of the season and all the usual suspects including around 20
GC
Cormorants.

[cayugabirds-l] Rufous Hummingbird

2012-10-28 Thread Marty Schlabach
The Rufous Hummingbird continues to visit as do birders. I'm aware of birders
stopping by every day except perhaps one, since the ID was confirmed on 10/17,
including two parties yesterday and one today so far, in spite of the rain.

We've added a feeder on the south side of the house, which will be warmer when
the sun shines, and we can sit at the table watching it! Hardware store owner
thought we were a bit crazy buying a hummingbird feeder this time of the year.
The hummer had seemed to frequent shrubs on that side of the house as well,
which is another reason we added a feeder. Yesterday the hummer seemed to be
flycatching. It would perch in the shrub and it would fly up in the air a
short distance and then back to the shrub to perch. As I write, it is doing
the same thing from its perch on the clothesline and then occasionally
returning to the feeder. It was also observed flying up to the window, I'm
assuming it's looking for insects. I also saw it sipping from drops of water
on the feeder.

[cayugabirds-l] Rufous hummingbird still up in intelaken

2012-10-27 Thread Liisa Mobley
I stopped up at Marty's house at about 10:30 this morning. The rufous
hummingbird showed up two or three minutes after I got there. Came to the
feeder twice, second time spent a minute or so drinking from the feeder. Great
viewing!
Thanks, Marty, for letting us all stop by.
First time I've seen the bird in real life; I've done two paintings of (male)
rufouses, using skins from the Lab of O for reference- nice to finally see a
rufous in flight (and alive!).

[cayugabirds-l] rufous hummingbird- yes

2012-10-25 Thread Nancy W Dickinson
I topped off the gorgeous morning with a visit to Marty's porch, where I sat
from 11:20 to 11:50. To my surprise, the Rufous Hummingbird indeed came in at
15-minute intervals and gave me ample opportunity to study it. A very handsome
life bird, and a beautiful spot-- no wonder he likes it there! Seemed to be
perching in the apple tree between visits.

Thanks so much, Marty and Mary Jean!

[cayugabirds-l] Rufous Hummingbird and Montezuma Today Sept 22, 2012

2012-10-22 Thread david nicosia
First of all I would like to thank Marty Schlabach for his hospitality today!
Thanks
Renee DePrato and I stopped at Marty's on the way to Montezuma and we did as
Marty suggested...go in the backyard and wait by the picnic table. So we arrived
and before I was able to set up my scope and camera the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD
showed up!
I got some decent photos. What a great bird. Another lifer for me and also
Renee. This
has been the year of western vagrants!

My 4 best photos are here...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/davenicosia/sets/72157631832436766/

Then we went to Towpath Road and among the thousands of canada geese we finally
found 3
GREATER WHITE FRONTED GEESE in Knox-Marcellus Marsh way in the back. We had
only
1 SNOW GOOSE. There were also 11 SANDHILL CRANES. Some were vocalizing which was
cool. There were no unusual gulls that we found. We did have many fly over
AMERICAN PIPITS.

Over at Puddler's marsh there were more CANADA GEESE and in addition we had 17
DUNLIN,
1 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS. These guys had very thin
bills and a clear white line over their eyes and much more white on their
foreheads and face.
Their heads were also smaller.

Next stop after lunch was the Montezuma Visitor's center. We had one PECTORAL
SANDPIPER
and again there were many CANADA GEESE. I believe I found one CACKLING GOOSE.
I posted this picture...I have trouble with these guys so let me know if I am
wrong on this...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/davenicosia/8114081385/in/set-72157631832439392

Then along wildlife drive the highlight was a raft of Aythya ducks of all
normal species
that we see most of the birds were GREATER/LESSER SCAUP, next most common
were REDHEADS, then there were just a few CANVASBACK and a few RING-NECKED
DUCKS. I estimated about 350 ducks.

The Lesser Yellowlegs Unit had KILLDEER, 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, BLUE-WINGED
and GREEN-WINGED TEALs, NORTHERN SHOVELERS and NORTHERN PINTAILS.

There were many many CANADA GEESE at the new shorebird area but we were running
short on time and we did not see any different shorebirds.

At Benning Marsh...we had more of the same birds we had seen plus a WILSON'S
SNIPE.

Select photos of the trip can be found here...

[cayugabirds-l] RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD

2012-10-20 Thread Naomi Brewer
HI ALL -

I have been reading all your messages about Rufous Hummers.
I live on Wyers Point Road on Cayuga Lake about 1 mile north of Sheldrake
Point and about 3 + miles from my good friend, Marty Schlabach. On Sunday,
Sept. 16 , a beautiful day, I sat on the front porch with my binos and
enjoyed birds coming to the freshly cleaned Bird Bath -Cardinals washing up,
even a nuthatch family. Then coming from a clump of fall flowers was a
Hummingbird, flying slower than my usual hummers. It turned and I could see
the rusty side as it went for the bird bath. Got my Binoculars on it, by
then it was sitting on the edge of the bird bath. Its back was a dark green.
Then it flew up in a nearby Red Bud tree and I lost it under the leaves.

I studied my Bird book and thought it was a female Rufous
but did not report it as I wanted to be very sure. I had hoped it would
stick around but I haven't seen it since.

On Oct. 17th when I received Jay McGowan's message with the
good picture of the Rufous at Marty's house I knew that it was just like the
one at my house on Sept. 16th. It may be the same one.

I can now add it to my life list. !!!

Good Birding,

Naomi Brewer

...and the following 20-some. Here is our eBird checklist with a few notes
(more discussion probably to come on the age and sex of this bird, this is just
my impression so far):
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11818250

It was coming more frequently and being more cooperative than the bird in
Brooktondale at the beginning of October, although after reviewing photos, they
are very similar looking (right down to the single red spot in the gorget,
which admittedly is not a rare feature.) Not sure we got enough documentation
on the Brooktondale bird to be able to conclusively say they are or not the
same bird (distance involved makes it surprising, if not impossible, that they
could be). In any case, a beautiful bird that has been around (probably, at
least a hummingbird has been around Merty's house) since about October 3rd.

[cayugabirds-l] Rufous Hummingbird - Phoenix, NY (Oswego County)

2012-09-18 Thread Scott Haber
The Lab just received photos of a male Rufous Hummingbird visiting a feeder
in the yard of Anne Dillon Gray in Phoenix (Oswego County). The bird first
appeared on Sunday and Anne has confirmed that he is still present as of
this morning. Anne graciously gave us the go-ahead to post the news and can
be reached via email at: dupre...@gmail.com if you'd like to contact her
about arranging to visit her yard to see the bird, but she will be heading
out of town on Friday so it would be best to get in touch soon.

Best,
Scott
