[cayugabirds-l] Rusty blackbirds and Sapsuckers

2020-04-20 Thread Sdanskin
This evening after a long day of planning my distance learning lessons for the
week and enduring a google meet staff meeting with 71 participants, I got out
for a relaxing walk and some birding in Sapsucker Woods. Enjoyed listening to
and watching 6 Rusty Blackbirds foraging in the wetlands around the boardwalk
on Wilson Trail South and 3 Sapsuckers (1M, 2F) interacting in a tree on the
East Trail.

[cayugabirds-l] Rusty Blackbirds, Hermit Thrushes and Pine Warbler at Sapsucker Woods

2019-04-12 Thread Diane Morton
This morning Ken and I took at walk on the East Trail of Sapsucker Woods.
It was reasonably well protected from the wind, and we saw quite a few
birds. On the back (southwest) side of the trail we heard a cacaphony of
sound - coming from a flock of Rusty Blackbirds! We counted 44 of them,
both on the ground and at mid-level in the trees. This was the largest
group of Rusty Blackbirds we had ever seen (more than all the Rusty's we'd
seen in our lives). Very cool to hear and see.

Then a bit farther on the west portion of the trail we saw 3 Hermit
Thrushes. Later on the Wilson trail, we got a tip that there was a Pine
Warbler near the shiny heron sculpture opposite the feeder garden. It was
still there for us - foraging low for good looks.

[cayugabirds-l] Rusty Blackbirds at Sapsucker Woods

2019-03-16 Thread Diane Morton
On our beginner bird walk this morning we saw 12-20 Rusty blackbirds
associating with Red-winged Blackbirds, most recently seen near the Visitor
Center. Most of the Rusty Blackbirds were already in dark plumage, but the
yellow eyes were striking. Ken and Mark Chao, who we ran into there, were
able to get nice photos of one in nonbreeding plumage with its rusty
feathers showing well.

[cayugabirds-l] Rusty Blackbirds and other feeder birds

2017-03-12 Thread Andrew David Miller
Our feeders have been inundated this morning by large numbers of red-winged
blackbirds (40+), rusty blackbirds (20+) and two common grackles. The flock
has currently evacuated the premises leaving behind the usual group of house
finches, red-breasted and white-breasted nuthatch, goldfinches, chickadees,
red-bellied, downy, hairy woodpeckers, juncos, one American tree sparrow, and
our solitary fox sparrow who has been with us for the last three weeks. We
also have had a loose flock of robins (20+) around for the last few days eating
hawthorn berries as well as a small flock of cedar waxwings which is a local
flock that nests in the area.

[cayugabirds-l] Rusty Blackbirds in Sapsucker Woods

2016-03-31 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
On a lunchtime walk, we came across at least a dozen Rusty Blackbirds singing
away in trees along the East trail at the eastern edge of the refuge close to
the southeast corner of the trail. We saw 8 of them, but it sounded like there
were a whole lot more. There were also singing Phoebes in a couple of places on
the East trail. And there's still at least one Ring-necked Duck on the main
pond.

(For those directionally challenged like me, the East trail runs from Sapsucker
Woods Road toward the Lab's green barn, along the pond behind the barn and
through the woods to a pond with a shelter. The blackbirds were between the two
ponds off to the right, coming from the road. You could hear them well before
you could see them.)

[cayugabirds-l] Rusty Blackbirds @ SSW

2015-10-18 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
For this morning's bird walk, we had a flock of about a dozen rusty
blackbirds near Sherwood Platform, first foraging low by one of the small
ponds, then gathering in one of the trees. Also there were some
yellow-rumped warblers and ruby-crowned kinglets, and many white-throated
sparrows throughout. Closer to Owens Platform I heard a red-bellied-like
call which I vaguely recall concluding last year as being from a winter
wren, but didn't tracked it down. A cooper's hawk was seen a couple times
patrolling the back pond, which has lots of wood ducks including brilliant
males.

[cayugabirds-l] Rusty blackbirds, etc.

2015-03-28 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
Our SFO group spent the morning at Newman golf course walking towards Jetty
Woods, with the inlet hosting a good variety of waterfowl, including GW
teals, pintails, gadwalls, redhead, canvasback, etc. A lone BONAPARTE'S GULL
hung out cooperatively before flying right in front of us showing of its
upper wing patterns, while a group of about 5 male and 1 female buffleheads
put on a nice show of head-bobbing displays right in front of us.

A mockingbird flushed and flew across the inlet, but later returned, while
across the inlet at Cass Park could be spied a group of 3-4 crows with
green wing tags, which I told my group meant they were FISH CROWS. Is that
cheating? :-D (and more importantly, is that accurate, Kevin and Anne?)

On the nest could be scoped a GREAT HORNED OWL and one fluffy chick.

At the edge of Jetty Woods a flock of a dozen or so RUSTY BLACKBIRDS
foraged on the ground, while above a male kestrel perched to feed on an
unidentified small bird. Two great blue herons soared gracefully in the
breeze, one perching only briefly. The lower fall creek downstream from the
suspension bridge is frozen, but the upper part was open with nice flows of
ice pieces; here we added belted kingfisher to our list, as a variety of
woodpeckers vocalized and drummed and played around us.

We drove up to the Stewart Avenue bridge over Fall Creek, the cliffs glazed
with a hoary sheen, and the nest hosting a brooding red-tailed hawk sitting
cozily in the wind shadow. As we left a second redtail soared past being
harassed by two crows.

We continued to Stevenson Road where Bob had told us of the continuing
snipes, but along the way Bob called to say they were absent on his way
home. We went there anyways, and thankfully found at least two WINSON'S
SNIPES who flushed and flew more than they stayed put (probably
uncomfortable with the larger-than-usual group of spectators being so
close). Meanwhile a well-hidden Killdeer just sat quietly in the grass
behind the puddle, as many gulls gathered and flushed in the distance but
we were too cold to scan, though we added turkey vulture to our list.

Back at the lab, a/the red-tailed hawk flew across the pond carrying a
squirrel, to land on the near bank, but presently took off again and
dropped the squirrel half-way to a snag where it sat for some time before
flying off, never to reclaim its quarry in at least the next 30 minutes. I
wonder what spooked it? I wonder if redtails have a five second rule for
their food :-D.

A really good morning of birding in spite of the weather.

2010-12-10 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
Today, I saw 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at the bend of Sapsucker Woods Rd, near the
Lab's bird feeding garden -- apparently they were seen yesterday as well. Also
in that area was a flock of at least 50 HOUSE FINCHES (the largest flock I have
seen in several years), and about 10 WAXWINGS -- all Cedars.

Yesterday, a MERLIN perched briefly in a treetop on the north side of the Lab
building, and then flew off towards the airport. A flock of about 100 SNOW
BUNTINGS was near the intersection of Irish Settlement Rd and Rt. 13 yesterday
around 1 PM.

A FLICKER and a CAROLINA WREN visited the feeders at home this morning, but no
interesting sparrows.

[cayugabirds-l] Rusty Blackbirds, Fox Sparrows, no Red-headed Woodpecker

2009-10-26 Thread Dave Nutter
It wasn't until early this morning that Ann Mitchell I checked out Chris
Wood's
Red-headed Woodpecker spot in Monkey Run South. It was frosty, shady and
pretty quiet, but we did find several GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, DARK-
EYED JUNCOS and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and we heard a
BROWN CREEPER song among a few other expected birds. I returned
this afternoon and took a longer loop walk clockwise upstream along the pink
trail
(past Chris' original description and eBird map mark where there was indeed a
RUFFED GROUSE drumming), cutting across a meander on the red trail, more
of the pink trail to near where NYS 13 crosses Fall Creek, and returning on the
orange trail. Near where I first got on the red trail I found 3 FOX SPARROWS,
and
on the far end I found botrh RED-BREASTED and WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES.
On the return on the orange trail on a straight grassy right-of-way I found a
flock
of CEDAR WAXWINGS AMERICAN ROBINS eating fruits near where a stream
passed under in a culvert.

In the late morning Ann I walked in several short grassy or weedy fields in
the
Varna area and found very few sparrows. I must concur with Bill Evans that we
are probably 3 weeks late on such a quest. Next year! We did see a SAVANNAH
SPARROW and saw and heard several flying AMERICAN PIPITS near Stevenson
Road, and a immature WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW in the Freese Road gardens.
There were a couple SONG SPARROWS, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, and AMERICAN
GOLDFINCHES as well, but literally only a handful of birds at Freese Rd.

Near the entrance to the Cornell compost facility there were many blackbirds
feeding
in a corn field which has not been harvested. These included hundreds of
COMMON
GRACKLES and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, over a dozen BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRDS, and at least 5 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS. The EUROPEAN STARLINGS
at the Game Farm numbered in the thousands, and were fun to watch as they took
flight in lava-lamp-like blobs when an immature COOPER'S HAWK came by and tried
to pick one off. The intended victim led it out of our sight toward the woods.
 There
were at least 20 RED-TAILED HAWKS in the area, mainly the Game Farm and a
similar
number of TURKEY VULTURES, mainly the compost facility and fence posts on the
adjacent hill. There were hundreds of HERRING and RING-BILLED GULLS and at
least one FISH CROW (heard by Ann) and plenty of AMERICAN CROWS at the
compost or commuting.

In Frozen Ocean we had 3 SWAINSON'S THRUSHES, 4 BROWN CREEPERS, 1

Kevin ( all),

Some neat birds were found Saturday that didn't get posted on
Cayugabirds-L or texted to the rare bird alert but did get shared by
cell phone among several people in the field. There was a Sanderling
which Bob McGuire Gary Kohlenberg ( Stuart Krasnoff?) found at
Myers Point early this morning, and was later seen by at least Ann
Mitchell and myself. And there was an Orange-crowned Warbler which
Nate Senner found at Freese Road which was later seen by Gary
Kohlenberg and Ann Mitchell. Neither was a first of year
observation nor a bird which is unexpected, but both are tough basin
birds which few people have seen this year. Should such
observations be put on the RBA? Should observers ensure that such
observations get posted on Cayugabirds-L? I admit that when Ann
called me a second time saying she didn't know how to do an RBA, I
chose to look for the Orange-crowned Warbler during my limited
opportunity rather than spend the time typing out an RBA, but I told
her so and thought she was going to have someone else do it. As for
the Sanderling, I was driving for the first 45 minutes after I heard
about it, and I never was at my computer again till well after I saw
it, so I didn't realize it didn't get posted till mid afternoon. At
noon when I saw it I was about to text that it was still there, but
called Ann first because I knew Sanderling had been on her list of
missing species, and then I got distracted by looking for the Orange-
crowned Warbler until I had other obligations. Sorry about that.

see over the goldenrod. It made me think that sparrow-ing in the

the edge I needed to see the Henslow's sparrow I missed at Hog Hole.
