[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods migrants

[Brad Walker]

New migrants today included Indigo Bunting near the powerline cut,
Chestnut-sided Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler and a MOURNING WARBLER
that sang several phrases near the powerline cut. I was not able to locate
it.

Also, on Tuesday I had the Great Horned Owl getting mobbed by American
Crows near the East Trail map. The trees are beginning to leaf out so it's
getting harder to see into its roosting area.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods Migrants

There were several flocks of warblers around Sapsucker Woods today.
Highlights included a LINCOLN'S SPARROW singing near the north side of the
building, a male BAY-BREASTED WARBLER at the Sherwood Platform and a
WILSON'S WARBLER just east of the Sherwood Platform.

Hi all,

There were a few migrants in Sapsucker Woods, mostly around the Sherwood
Platform. There was a mixed flock of BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, RED-EYED
VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, HOUSE WREN and COMMON YELLOWTHROATS. There were also
a few BALTIMORE ORIOLES hanging around.

To add to Brad's tally:  there were two Northern Parulas, both singing, on
the Wilson Trail North just west of the Sherwood Platform at about 9:15AM.
A Blackburnian Warbler also sang a few times further east on the Wilson
Trail, just beyond the footbridge.

I've been watching the gull feeding frenzy the last several evenings. They
are definitely catching something.
I drive that way every day and cannot recall this happening before and
especially not so many days in a row. Anyone care to speculate on what they
are feeding so frenzily on?

All those gulls must surely be a challenge to the rowers as they hover over
their heads while they row and stir up whatever the gulls are after.

6:00 to 8:30. The Wilson Trail was quiet on the way out but had picked up

Hi all,

There was a little bit of activity on the Wilson Trail North this morning.
I found a mixed species flock at the Sherwood Platform that had two
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, and HOODED WARBLER.
There was also a MOURNING WARBLER on the inner trail before the footbridge.
The bird perched out in the open for several minutes and I managed to get
some crappy photos with my phone.

There were a few nice migrants moving around Sapsucker Woods this morning
on the Wilson Trail. Highlights for me were the aforementioned BAY-BREASTED
WARBLER, a TENNESSEE WARBLER, singing SWAINSON'S THRUSH and the return of
SCARLET TANAGERS and RED-EYED VIREOS to the western woods.

of Sapsucker Woods Road this morning, which included:

Nashville Warbler
Blue-winged Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler
Blue-headed Vireo
Common Yellowthroat


A Veery was also "veer-ing" on the east side.

Hi all,

There were some new arrivals at Sapsucker Woods this morning, the most
notable being: OVENBIRD singing along the west side of Sapsucker Woods
Road, a BLUE-HEADED VIREO singing in the same location, GRAY CATBIRD on the
Wilson Trail North, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT singing along the powerline cut
near the Fuller Wetlands, YELLOW WARBLER near the eastern powerline cut,
several singing EASTERN TOWHEES and HOUSE WRENS, and , although not a new
arrival, I heard the winnowing of a WILSON'S SNIPE near the entrance to the
Visitor's Lot.

Hi all,

There wasn't too much action on the Wilson Trail North today, but the
Sherwood Platform did have a singing/calling BROWN THRASHER and a
cooperative BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER foraging in the willows at eye level.

Slightly further west on the path was a group of three handsome
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.

The/A large group of RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was also present again just south of
the building, but they seem to be moving around a bit.

Hi all,

The south winds brought a few new birds to Sapsucker Woods including a
HERMIT THRUSH near the Swallow House, and EASTERN TOWHEE and BROWN THRASHER
on the Wilson Trail North. There didn't seem to be anything other than Song
Sparrow around the parking areas, but I didn't try too hard.

Brad Walker and I had a nice lunch-time skywatch from the hill at Sapsucker
Woods just now. Highlights were an adult GOLDEN EAGLE, 3 ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS, 3 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS (and Brad had another just before we went
out), several thousand Canada Geese (nowhere near the numbers yesterday,
though), 2 COOPER'S HAWKS, 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 5 CACKLING GEESE with a
small group of Canada Geese, 12 TUNDRA SWANS by themselves with 5 Canada
Geese trailing in the flock, 1 NORTHERN PINTAIL with a Mallard flock, 2
COMMON MERGANSERS heading north high overhead, about 17 KILLDEER flying by
in groups of 1-5, a GREAT BLUE HERON heading north, and my first 3 RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS of the year with a small blackbird flock over the middle staff
parking lot.

  I had a little flock this morning along Sapsucker Woods Road near the
"Frog Barn" (91 Sapsucker Woods Road) with Warbling, Philadelphia, and
Red-eyed vireos, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and a few warblers (Magnolia,
Blackpoll, Black-throated Green).

  There was a (the?) Prairie Warbler along the north side of the Lab of
Ornithology today a little before noon, foraging very low in small willows
and goldenrod. This is where I saw one on 22 August - I don't know what
would be more remarkable, that the same bird still is in the area, or that
two different individuals would pass in front of my office window in a
single season.

I ran into several large mixed flocks before and after work in
Sapsucker Woods today. This morning, the first flock was south of the
pond on Wilson Trail. Most of the 10+ warblers were two far and
obscured in the canopy, but I picked out one Blackburnian. Near the
intersection of Wilson and Severinghaus trails there was a cluster of
4+ Catharus thrushes, but I only identified 2 as Swainson's before
they moved off into the forest away from me. I found a much bigger
mixed flock along the north end of Wilson Trail in the flooded forest
between the trail and the building. Highlights from this flock:

Blue-headed Vireo -  2
Nashville Warbler -  1
Magnolia Warbler -  3
Chestnut-sided Warbler -  1
Blackpoll Warbler -  5
Black-throated Green Warbler -  1

>From 5 to 5:30pm, there was a very active mixed flock at the north end
