Here is my ebird checklist from yesterday to give people an idea how I came up with 400k: Lower Lake Rd., S of Cayuga Lake SP Mar 17, 2021 1:42 PM Traveling 1.60 miles 130 Minutes All birds reported? No Comments: Submitted from eBird for iOS, version 2.4.1 Build 2.4.35
400000 Snow Goose -- Estimated two ways. First, I used my odometer to determine the length of the flock along the road as 1.6 miles. Then I randomly counted one row of geese straight out which averaged 100. Figuring one row every 2 feet comes out to 422,400. Second, I used Google Earth to draw a closed area on the map that the flock occupied. This came out to 444,519 square meters. Using one bird per square meter to arrive at 444,519. Those densities may be high so I rounded down to 400,000. That being said there was another quite large raft in the middle of the lake that I did not work on.
