Re: [cayugabirds-l] Swans

2022-01-28 Thread Dave Nutter
Several more Tundra Swans flew in while I watched between noon & 1:40pm from a
sheltered vantage to the west. In addition to a family of 2 all-white adults &
5 grayish immatures who stayed close to each other almost between the docks,
there were eventually 10 more adults on the lake nearby. They all called and
gestured to one another briefly, but it seemed friendly. 17 was my high count.

[cayugabirds-l] Swans and cranes on armitage

2021-11-17 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Still 100+ mixed swans along Armitage road in the flooded fields, nice close
looks too. Tip: stay in your car (use your directional signals and pull to the
side of the road if you’re going to come to a stop) but they’re sensitive it
seems and as soon as a human shows themselves, the swans move back or fly off.

Several hundred (that I could see but likely
More) puddle ducks, dominated by mallards. 100+ gulls as well.

East of the flooded fields, before the Route 89 intersection, I spotted several
clumps of Sandhill cranes on either side of the road.

Good birding on my commute!

[cayugabirds-l] Swans galore on Armitage Road

2021-11-12 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Hi all,

First, Armitage Road reopened earlier this week! The amount of water that was
covering the road was incredible. With the overnight rain I was worried it
might bring it up again.

Second, the fields on either side are still VERY flooded, and this morning's
commute showed me 100+ swans, most on the south side of the road. Both Tundras
and Trumpeters. I was running late to work, so couldn't do a solid count, but
I'd guess 2/3 Trumpeters and 1/3 Tundras just based off vocalizations.

A nice mix of a few hundred ducks: Mallards, Pintail, Shovelers dominated the
group.

There was also an adult eagle sitting in the big tree that's on the berm next
to Clinton's Ditch (old Erie canal on the west end of the fields). There is a
nest near there, and during the winter I frequently see the pair sitting there.

Happy birding!

[cayugabirds-l] swans and larks

2021-02-02 Thread Linda Post Van Buskirk
Nice flock of about 15 swans, including several young ones, just off my
lakeshore, just north of the Aurora village line.

People looking for larks should try the Springport/Aurelius Townline road, and
Benham road, which tees off the Townline road. I see flocks of larks there
every day, and on some days, snow buntings. I have not seen any longspurs.

[cayugabirds-l] Swans etc

2019-11-23 Thread Laura Stenzler
There are many hundreds of Tundra swans very close to shore in calm water along
Lower Lake Road, north and south of Cayuga Lake State Park. It’s an amazing
sight. Also several groups of 20-30 hooded mergansers, some scaup, wigeon, rudy
ducks, redhead, gadwall, lots of mallards and of course lots of Canada geese.
The amazing thing is how close to shore they are and how calm the water is.

I was out shoveling this morning, heard a few swans call, and looked up to
see a flock of 20 TUNDRA SWANS right over the house. New Yard Bird. They
were headed NW toward the Big Lake. But I kept hearing them off and on for
the next 15 minutes. Apparently their leader got confused by heading out
this way. Anyway, they figured it out and passed over the house again low,
going SE.

[cayugabirds-l] SWANS and geese over Sapsucker Woods

2012-02-27 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
I'l surprised Jay McGowan didn't post this, but around noon, as the tens of
thousands of geese were passing over Mt. Sapsucker: on the slope above the
Fuller Wetlands, a group of 19 TUNDRA SWANS passed overhead in a flock of
geese. I believe these were my first ever at Sapsucker Woods. In the brief
period I watched, we had a single CACKLING GOOSE, and only 3 SNOW GEESE, plus a
flock of COMMON GRACKLES -- I'm sure Jay had much more.

[cayugabirds-l] Swans and Geese - Village of Cayuga and MNWR

2012-02-24 Thread William Roberts

I saw approximately 300-400 swans on Cayuga Lake near the Village of Cayuga
tonight; probably Tundras. Also thousands of Snow Geese and Canada Geese flew
over Montezuma at sunset ( 5:20 to 5:50 p.m. Snows were flying south on the
western side of Cayuga Lake and landing just off shore directly across from
Cayuga and slightly south. Flock after flock of Canadas were flying southeast
and crossing over the canal slightly north of the Visitor Center.
The swans were on the water gathered just north of the train trestle and
300-400 yards west and northwest of the Cayuga Marina, formerly the Agway
Plant. In addition droves, flock after flock, of blackbirds were migrating
through Montezuma from north to south directly over the parking lot adjacent to
the Visitors Center. It was too dark to make positive identifications but
shapes and flight patterns led me to believe that most were RwBs.
It was a great evening of birding.

[cayugabirds-l] Swans, ATSparrows, Horned Larks

2011-12-17 Thread Mark Miller
Around Montezuma this morning at sunrise, some C. Geese, 1 mature Bald Eagle, 1
male Hooded Merganser, couple N. Harriers Red-tailed hawks. Over to East
Rd/Potato shed lots of geese (Snow Canada) but no Snowy Owl. Gulls all over
this morning with some ducks (mostly Mallards). A pair of Horned Larks and
several Tree Sparrows between Van Dyne Spoor and Wright Rds. Up to Sodus Point
in the almost blizzard conditions, lots of Long-tails just in the bay, several
Horned Grebes, and few flocks of Mergansers (RB?). Visibility was very poor and
North wind kept most stuff in the bay.

[cayugabirds-l] Swans

2011-08-30 Thread Greg Ward
Did anyone see the three Swans in Montezuma on Sunday afternoon? My wife and
I drove through and spotted them in the pond between the drive and
interstate 90 at about 5pm. They seemed big, no yellow on the bill but the
head and neck had faint grayish streaking that sometimes looked rusty.

They could only be Tundra?

I did, and they were Trumpeter Swans. Although Tundra is by far the most
abundant swan in the winter, Trumpeters are the only swans that breed at the
refuge during the summer.

[cayugabirds-l] swans, pheasants, etc

2011-01-21 Thread CFSchmitt
Thanks to Bob McGuire's email earlier this week, yesterday afternoon we
could get the 4 pheasants on Rafferty/Dixon Rd., pecking around under the
cow's feet like barnyard chickens.
Two Mute Swans were close to shore just before the Lake Rd. bluffs,
courting a bit by nodding their heads and making the classic heart-shaped
silhouette as they faced each other. Lovely, really.
No luck with the Eared Grebe, but the Horned, plus many Red-breasted
Mergs, and all the others, had moved down south of Long Point and were just
offshore by our cottage.
