Re: [cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull at compost piles per Tim Lenz

2015-01-20 Thread bob mcguire
I just came from the compost piles w/probable Thayer’s Gull. Jay and I viewed
it from Stevenson Road (work going on at the piles). The bird was last seen on
the hillside east of the piles - no need to think about driving in.

Tim/Brad - why Thayer’s and not Iceland?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull at compost piles per Tim Lenz

2015-01-20 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi everyone,
In addition to the 1st cycle Thayer's, there was an adult Iceland Gull at the
compost piles this afternoon. Both took off for the lake at 3:45.
In the field, the two stood next to each for size and structure comparison. The
more Herring Gull-like robustness is nicely seen in photos posted to eBird from
Jay and Tim (links at end). I had somewhat distant looks at both in the scope,
and was not seeing very strong contrast on the primaries (again distance),
secondary bar, and tail, and was expressing these concerns to others in the
field. However the photos hint at a much stronger Thayer's candidate.
(The) adult Iceland was seen at Stewart Park around 4pm, on the ice in the
southeast corner. Tufted Duck was not thoroughly searched for, so no update on
that one.
