[cayugabirds-l] West side of the lake field trip

2019-09-30 Thread Ken Haas
HI everyone!

Please join me, Ken Haas, on Sunday, October 6th, for a half-day field trip on
the west side of the lake. We'll meet at the Ithaca Children’s Garden at 8:00
am (near the big turtle) to car pool and will return around 12:30 pm. While
there, we’ll walk up the Black Diamond trail for a short distance, then car
pool to Allen H. Treman State Marine Park and the Hog Hole fields looking for
field, water and forest edge birds. We will be walking in wet grass so be sure
to wear proper footwear. From there it's a short distance to the upper end of
the Black Diamond trail above Taughannock Falls for a quick walk on the trail.
We may go other places, depending on available time and the inclination of the
group. Dress for the weather. Bring a snack and something to drink if you want.

I hope to see you there!

Ken

[cayugabirds-l] West side of the lake

2014-03-01 Thread Ann Mitchell
Dave Nutter and I went up the lake starting around 12:15. Our stops were the
Ithaca Marina (or boat club), Taughannock Park (north side) and Sheldrake. We
saw all ducks, except for Northern Shoveler and any teal. No rarities. Dave
found White-winged Scoters at Taughannock and Sheldrake. A single Ruddy Duck
was seen at Sheldrake. Of note, there were many gulls at the north end of
Taughannock plus one Red-necked Grebe that Dave viewed far north. One last
thing, at Taughannock we saw many Red-breasted Mergansers and also at
Sheldrake. Personally, I have never seen them in those numbers!

Dave, if I missed something, please post it. All athyas were in abundance.

Forgot to mention- we also saw 4 Bald Eagles at the Marina- two adults and two
juveniles. We saw the nest north of Glen Wood Pines, but no eagles present. My
hunch is that they were on the ice, but...
Good birding, Ann

Re: [cayugabirds-l] West side of Cayuga Lake, plus Montezuma area

2010-04-17 Thread Matthew Medler
I knew I'd forget something: a singing House Wren heard several times
in the Sheldrake area.

I spent the day today (17 April 2010) birding with Tim Lenz, Alberto
López, and Chris Wiley. We started at Stewart Park, then headed up the
west side of Cayuga Lake, and hit a few spots in the Montezuma area.
Despite the cold, windy conditions, and the occasional rain and sleet,
we had a nice day of birding. Here are some of the highlights:

1 Field Sparrow on the Swan Pen trail

Hundreds of migrant swallows flying north along the west side of the
lake; mostly Tree Swallows, but also a few Barn Swallows, N.
Rough-winged Swallows, and Purple Martins

3+ singing Pine Warblers in the Sheldrake area, singing from white pines
in two different yards; there were also 5+ Yellow-rumped Warblers in the
same area.

2 stunning Long-tailed Ducks and an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull at
Dean's Cove

1 Red-necked Grebe, ~25 Common Loons (on the water), and a few
Bonaparte's Gulls in Varick

4 Upland Sandpipers at the the Empire Days Fairgrounds in Seneca Falls

1 (early) Solitary Sandpiper at the entrance to Montezuma NWR

13 Lapland Longspurs, 15+ Horned Larks, and 1 Vesper Sparrow, Savannah
Mucklands

3 continuing American Golden-Plovers, 15 Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Lesser
Yellowlegs, 1 Dunlin (mostly in breeding plumage), and 60 Wilson's Snipe
at the end of Van Dyne Spoor Road. (The railroad crossing is open again.)

Good birding,
Matt Medler
