Re: [cayugabirds-l] Gyrfalcon update please

2018-01-19 Thread Nicholas Kachala
The reason that species are blocked and hidden as "sensitive" in eBird
could be from a multitude of reasons. In terms of the Gyrfalcon, it is a
bird at risk for capture and trade by falconers. Exposing the location of
such a prized species through public records could spell trouble for the
bird. Yes, this gives birders a disadvantage, but the hope is that it saves
birds from danger. Many endangered species, especially in Asia and South
America are blocked as sensitive to protect them from the illegal pet bird
trade.

I don’t fully understand how a Gyrfalcon in winter (in the Lower 48), or
any falcon in winter for that matter, is considered a “sensitive species”
such that it gets blocked by eBird.

Snowy Owls actually make more sense to block over a Gyrfalcon, any day. Way
too much stress is put on them, at least for those which show up closer to
more densely populated cities.

Any thoughts on changing Gyrfalcon in eBird? Reasons?

Thanks!

Sincerely,
Chris
