Re: [ccp4bb] X-ray crystallography defense questions

2022-06-14 Thread Nukri Sanishvili
Hi Jessica,
Your subject being membrane proteins, I might ask a question if your
conclusions and claims are commensurate with the data quality but as
Eleanor says, it really depends on what you are actually claiming and what
kind of data you have.
Cheers,
Nukri

[ccp4bb] Problem with restraint library in coot 0.9.8.3 (issue with ccp4 8.0?)

2022-06-14 Thread Zhen Gong
Hi,

I had problems with restraint library in coot 0.9.8.1 when I updated to CCP4
8.0. I could not do any real space refinements because of this problem.
Yesterday, I updated to CCP4 8.0.002 and coot was updated to 0.9.8.3EL. The
problem in restraint library was still not solved. Will re-installation of ccp4
be able to solve the problem? Many thanks in advance!

Best,
Zhen

Re: [ccp4bb] X-ray crystallography defense questions

2022-06-14 Thread Eleanor Dodson
Partly depends on what you have written! Faux pas would lead to a
question.. but I would probably concentrate on what the structure has told
you about your protein system. I would expect you to know a bit about the
strengths and limitations of the technique.

Re: [ccp4bb] X-ray crystallography defense questions

2022-06-14 Thread Klaus Futterer
Q1: who needs X-ray crystallography - we have cryoEM?

Q2: what's the phase problem and is it still a problem (after so many years)?

Subject: [ccp4bb] X-ray crystallography defense questions

Hello CCP4!

I am preparing for my PhD defense on X-ray crystallography of membrane proteins.

So my ask from you folks is: What X-ray crystallography questions would you ask
in a PhD defense?

All questions - easy, tough, tricky - are welcome.

Thank you kindly,

Jessica Besaw

[ccp4bb] Postdoctoral position available in Bethesda, MD, US

2022-06-14 Thread Pazgier, Marzena
A postdoctoral position is available immediately to participate in an
interdisciplinary research program in structural immunology in the
laboratory of Dr. Pazgier (https://www.usuhs.edu/node/68252) at the
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, MD.
Candidates are expected to work on ongoing research projects in structural
biology with the aim to understand the molecular basis of the adaptive
immune response to HIV-1 and Sars-Cov-2 and the ultimate goal to develop
new protein-based therapeutics and novel vaccine concepts. Strong research
interests and experience in molecular cloning, protein expression,
molecular interaction analysis, X-ray crystallography and/or Cryo-EM, as
well as outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills,
are required for this post. Candidates with an immunological background are
invited to apply.

Candidates need to be highly motivated individuals who enjoy working as
part of a dynamic, collaborative and multidisciplinary team. Preference
will be given to candidates with exceptionally strong experimental skills,
a strong record of peer-reviewed publications, and a demonstrated
commitment to basic and translational research. Qualified candidates should
have a doctorate in chemistry/biochemistry, microbiology, immunology or a
closely-related field. Candidates at any career stage are invited.

USU is in Bethesda, MD directly across the street from the NIH, and is
therefore part of an extraordinarily vibrant local biomedical research
community. Our research projects take advantage of recently established
Core facilities for Nextgen sequencing, Bioinformatics and Structural
Biology analyses. USU has a strongly collaborative environment, with weekly
Immunology data club and journal club meetings, as well as regular research
seminars featuring local and invited speakers.

Candidates should apply to the Henry M. Jackson Foundation:
http://careers.hjf.org submitting a CV plus names and contact information
for 3 references.

Note: you may also directly contact Dr. Pazgier directly,
marzena.pazg...@usuhs.edu.
