[ccp4bb] Postdoctoral Associate at Stony Brook University/Brookhaven National Laboratory - Structural Biology of Plant Stress Signaling
Stony Brook University/BNL has a Postdoc opening to work on the structural mechanisms of plant stress signaling controlled by a family of conserved cysteine proteases called metacaspase (MC). Structural, molecular and genetic approaches will be deployed to dissect the mechanistic basis of MC functions for two prototypical members Arabidopsis AtMC4 and AtMC9, each with distinct signaling pathways and regulatory properties. The results obtained are expected to identify novel strategies to improve plant stress tolerance through engineering of constructs or chemical modulators that can predictably modify these signaling pathways. Applicants should have a recent PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, plant biology or a closely related field, preferably with experience (but not required) in X-ray crystallography or single-particle cryo-EM. Ability to carry out protein expression and purification work is essential and an interactive personality is highly desirable. [ccp4bb] First call for Cryo-EM proposals at Brookhaven’s new Laboratory for BioMolecular Structure
Dear Community: The Laboratory for BioMolecular Structure (LBMS) <https://www.bnl.gov/cryo-em/> at Brookhaven National Laboratory is now accepting general research proposals through an open proposal process. This new, state-of-the-art research center offers scientists access to advanced cryo-electron microscopy <https://www.bnl.gov/cryo-em/instrumentation.php> (cryo-EM) for single particle analysis of proteins and macromolecular complexes, as well as cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) of cells and tissues. LBMS operates in two 6-month cycles and all electron microscope (EM) time is requested each cycle through the web-based Proposal Allocation, Safety, and Scheduling System (PASS) <https://pass.bnl.gov/> system. There are a number of modes of access for cryo-EMs at LBMS including General User, Rapid Access, and Block Allocation Groups that all follow a common life cycle that involves the following steps: proposal submission, feasibility evaluation, peer-review, allocation of EM time, scheduling, carrying out the work, and reporting the results. To start, you need to identify the type of proposal, the technique, and the microscope that fits your needs. For more details, see the LBMS User Guide <https://www.bnl.gov/cryo-em/userguide/>. *Given the uncertainties with onsite EM operations for the January – June (2021-1) cycle, all proposals must provide a remote access plan.* The deadline for proposals for the 2021-1 cycle at LBMS is *Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 11:59 pm New York time*. If you feel you may need help during the submission process, please create your proposal as early as possible. Please note the User Services Office <https://www.bnl.gov/ps/users/administration.php> will be available until 5:00 pm that day. For instructions on how to submit proposals, see the LBMS User Guide <https://www.bnl.gov/cryo-em/userguide/>. For questions regarding the LBMS facility, please contact Liguo Wang at lbms...@bnl.gov. We look forward to working with you during these exciting early years of LBMS operations! == Thanks for your attention! [ccp4bb] Brookhaven Lab’s Cryo-EM facility now open for COVID-19-related research
Dear Community: On July 29, Brookhaven National Laboratory opened its new cryo-electron microscopy center <https://www.bnl.gov/newsroom/news.php?a=117344>, the Laboratory for BioMolecular Structure (LBMS) <https://www.bnl.gov/cryo-em/>, with an initial focus on COVID-19-related research through an open proposal call <https://surveys.external.bnl.gov/n/RapidAccessProposal.aspx>. This state-of-the-art research center offers researchers access to advanced cryo-electron microscopes (cryo-EM) for single particle analysis of proteins and macromolecular complexes, as well as cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) of cells and tissues. LBMS currently has two cryo-electron microscopes—funded by NY State’s Empire State Development—and the facility has space for additional microscopes to enhance its capabilities in the future. In recognition of NY State’s partnership on the project and to bring the spirit of New York to the center, each laboratory room is associated with a different iconic New York State landmark. The facility is operated through funds from the US Department of Energy Biological and Environmental Sciences. Given the impact that cryo-EM has had in advancing COVID-19 research, the construction of LBMS was accelerated and is now open for COVID-19-related research two months ahead of schedule. Researchers working on non-proprietary COVID-19-related studies can request remote access to the instruments free of charge by submitting a COVID-19 Rapid Access proposal <https://surveys.external.bnl.gov/n/RapidAccessProposal.aspx>. For questions regarding the LBMS facility or the call for COVID-19 Rapid Access proposals, please contact Liguo Wang at lwa...@bnl.gov. == Thanks for your attention!
