Motorola M88K books & user manuals (looking for)

2019-01-01 Thread Carlo Pisani via cctalk
hi
on DTB we are designing a RISC-ish CPU, code name "Arise-v2"(1).
We are using the MIPS R2K and the RISC-V as the reference.

In the end, it will be implemented in HDL -> FPGA.

The page on DTB is related to a software emulator (written in C) for
the whole system. CPU + RAM + ROM + UART, etc. so we can test and our
ISA more comfortably.

As a second reference, I'd like to consider the first Motorola RISC:
88K, which is very elegant and neat ISA; unfortunately, I have
difficulties at finding user manuals and books about it.

If someone wants to sell me a copy, it will be appreciated!

Thanks and happy new year!

p.s.
other interesting contributes about RISC-V and architectures, are on

so, already asked but i haven't yet got a clear answer
I have an xterm Tektronix xp217 for sale
it comes with *everything* you need to use it
- its original PSU, able to operate from 100-to-250V
- its original CD with the firmware (it's required a tftpboot server)

it's located in Italy
let me know if interested, your offer, and your location in order to
calculate the shipping cost

(I have discount with UPS)

we got one for the DTB website, and it was not nice ...

it's one of the reasons why we dropped the experimental-bay since if
it involves a little business then things go even worse

which problems do you have in the US? anything similar to GDPR? tell me

there is a dude in Virginia (US), telling me he can put emails and
confidential data (address, phone, etc) in public without any
authorization from the owner.

I don't know if he is legally allowed do it, but 5 months have already
passed without a fine for him ... whereas if you do it in Switzerland
or in Italy, you immediately get a legal threat, and/or a fine

p.s.
look at Facebook Europe vs Facebook US which of the two did get a fine?

besides, the GPDR and this new hipster legal stuff (in Europe) are now
making things even more complex, especially if a website is involved

our own technology. RFID at 125Khz. We already have a prototype. A
good occasion to play with analogic electronics and also a good
occasion to use ICC11 v6.5 on a HC11 board, and ICC11 was a good C
compiler in the 90s. (we are also supporting gcc-11, but it's ... not
so good)

yup, SunRay uses a smart-card, but it's not contactless, and it's a
true-smart card, whose protocol looks not so funny to play with
(except if you are paid for doing it). SmartCards are safer anyway

We want to use RFID Smartcard-shaped cards. The looks like a credit
card, but they have an RFID capsule inside. Therefore we only need a
coil to read it.

Simply, and funny.

Precisely! We neither have a CNC, nor a 3D printer, and we want to
recycle polycarbonate frames. We got a lot of industrial waste. It
would be a shame trashing them.

it can be done easily. Our boards run U-BOOT as firmware, and Linux as
the kernel.
On your RPI you just need to manage a custom kernel on a custom rootfs.

There is a Dude on the internet offering a small Indigo1 case with a
LinuxBoard inside.
It's a cool project. The case is 3D printed.

The only "tricky" part is setting the builder. We chose catalyst
because we also support Gentoo on MIPS4, MIPS32, HPPA2, PPCBE, thus
it's a "natural" choice, but there are also builders like Angstrom and
OpenWRT which allow you to have ucLibc and similar. We are using glibc
just for our convenience (since we already have a working and tested
glibc-profile)

Anyway, we'd like to have a nice WindowsManager. We are using "mwm"
which is super light and very classic (my Tektronix XP217 uses it),
but we are going to evaluate "fvwm": it seems it's light but offering
good "visual features"; we'd like to reconfigure it with the look&feel
of 4DWM (SGI IRIX) ...

maybe it's possible, who knows :D

the computer room is located 10 meters underground in a room which
looks like a mini bunker. But it's not relevant, it's just a name for
a website.

> And why the .xyz TLD? I don't know much about it
> but it always looks really sketchy to me.

When you put a server to the internet you have an IP and you want to
be reached by an URL you have to pay someone for the service. We found
a cheap service offering a domain, and the "xyz," is what they offered
for the lowest price possible (10 euro/year) since dot com and dot org
cost more money (50-100 or more).

We already pay for the electricity and we are not hosting any
advertising service, thus .. a cheap domain is what we consider "good"
for us.

What is really worrying is the number of spammers attacking the
server(1) and the fact that people are not seriously using a resource,
sometimes for the reason that we are obliged to declare the GPDR
agreement, or for the reason, we are not offering HTTPS.

Some of these guys are on facebook where they claim the platform is
even more difficult to be used for the purpose of discussing things
rather than ... watching a gallery of pics

And some of them still want a bazaar, sort of (person-to-person) way
to sell/buy/trade retro computer stuff, but then they only go to the
eBay, complaining that it's too expensive for both the seller and the
buyer (due to the money you have to give to eBay, I guess).

That's the time it was, funny and weird at the same time.

(1) this caused a few services to be dropped, e.g. we needed to drop
the MessageWall because it was bombarded by spam and trolling.
MessageWall was implemented in PHP by us and it was not so robust,
therefore we are now limiting the usage and offering a chat channel on
Discord which is more robust and managed by others.

2018-12-20 Thread Carlo Pisani via cctalk
> Can I ask why you are using the board that you are using?

several reasons; we also use a similar board for a NAS, but basically,
we like this board for the PCI bus, and for the JTAG

we happen to have a BDI1000 JTAG ICE with a valid license for
professional debugging software for the PPC/405, so it's really nice
for us

> Is this project to use something you have and make it useful? Or is it
> meant for others to be able to replicate?

dunno. For us it's useful, and it's a need since we really need three
LCDs connected to two nodes through a KVM in both dual screens and
Xinerama setup (it depends on the context). These two PowerPC nodes
are also connected to a Routerboard (bought yesterday), thus the whole
system is able to bootstrap, well balanced on its load, able to load
its services and it's also independent of everything else on the lan.

PowerPC boards are not able to bootstrap from a harddrive/pendrive
(the kernel's driver for the pATA chip is bugged and doesn't work, the
firmware is ... theoretically able to load a raw file from a

pATA device), they need to bootstrap from the lan, and the Routerboard
is able to provide a good tftpbootp server plus other services to
accomplish the task.

We are also developing a RFID card to unlock/lock the machine (still
experimental, and we are going to use an old 68HC11 board for this ...
it's 80s technology)

It's really a funny project made recycling old parts, and an old Apple
PowerMac chassis. We also really like manually making parts, without a
3D printer. If you look at parts for the PSU, they were manually made
by engraving the plastic! This is part of the fun :D

anyway, I believe the system can be replicated with modern technology,
say ... two or three RPIs in a modern case made by a 3D printer.

> If it's the latter, I'd think that a board that's inexpensive and easy

well, we have a job in avionics, where PPC boards are used. We bought
years ago a couple of boards from Newark and they were 1900 euro each,
plus fees and S/H (FeDex).

Two years ago, I sold the last "codename eBony" (PowerPC460) couple of
boards to a company in China for a super discount (500 euro
both/second hand, instead of 1600 each/brand new). The DHT-boards that
we are using are derived from a similar expensive board. There was a
company in 2001 who made them, but ... it's difficult to find one
nowadays. We had 2 little DTH boards in stock, and we decided to use
for a personal project since they are definitively EOL once and
forever and we don't want to support them in 2019.

Again, the RPI is the super cheap choice since it's easy to be found
(e.g. you can buy from RS, Mouser, et al), and it only costs around 30

RPI is USB driven, not a problem, modern keyboards and mouses are USB,
our is PS/2 but there are USB-to-PS/2 adapter for 5-10 Euro; The RPI
is not VGA, it's HDMI, but yet again it's not a problem, there are VGA
adapters (HDMI to VGA) for the RPI and VGA modules for the expansion
port. This can be evaluated.

For a classic design (the 90s and 2000s design), we want to use VGA
LCDs, VGA KVM, and PCI_VGA video adapters.

yup, we are alone. I have already posted on the Linux mail-list, still
no answer.
Not a problem, it simply requires more time.

Re: Project sonoko, x11 xterm home-made

2018-12-20 Thread Carlo Pisani via cctalk
The prototype (1) is already working; in the pic, there is a DHT board
with a Matrox Millennium video card, and a PCI-PS/2 card. The pic
shows a running windows manager on x11.
we are using a little PowerPC 405GP board, loaded with Linux and
xorg-x11. The processor's ISA is similar to a G3 CPU, but not exactly
equal. We had to create a specific toolchain for it.

The rootfs is derived from Gentoo/Linux by using Catalyst on QEMU/PPC.
It's neat enough, and the whole process is under control (we can
choose flags, and rebuild the whole accordingly)

Currently, the only problem we have is related to the kernel,
specifically to support DeviceTree and the 405 CPU which has a weird
address alignment, thus it wastes a lot of cycles in kernel space.

If someone has experience with this CPU, we are open to hints and tips.

Re: Portable terminals

2018-09-09 Thread Carlo Pisani via cctalk
we (at http://www.downthebunker.xyz) are developing a project that is
a portable vt100 in laptop shape.

done with modern components, essentially it's an FPGA + LVDS circuit
to drive the LCD
the chassis will be manufactured by laser-cutting plastic planes, then
assembled with glue.

it's not yet a public project since it's a personal team internal
work, but maybe ...

anyway, the firmware is barebone, with a simple OS that runs directly the VT100

why do you say that?
a vt100 terminal requires only a text VDU (video display unit) with
hw-scrolling support, and a piece of software to support the VT100
protocol (escape-codes decoded into action for the VDU).

in fact, my Digital VT200 comes with an ASIC chip for the VDU, while
the software side runs on an Intel 8051 MPU that directly interfaces
the keyboard, the VDU, and the serial line

this doesn't look complex

how good is the data reliability with CD ROM and DVD RAM?

2018-07-21 Thread Carlo Pisani via cctalk
hi
yesterday I was shocked by a couple of videos on Youtube where guys
pointed out their negative experiences with CD ROM and DVD RAM as
media for their own backup.

They complained their data completely lost after 5 years of storage in
CD ROMs, pointing out that their CDs were perfectly conserved and kept
clean without scratches, but all the data is gone lost since the media
is unreadable.

This is what they said in the video.

I have a lot of backup here stored in CDs, and I have recently bought
an SCSI DVDRAM unit to create new backups in caddies DVD-RAMs (of
4.2Gbyte each)

inside PIC32 there is a MIPS32-R2 core, but the toolchain is not OS-profiled
it's metal bare (without an OS, and in this case Linux requires a lot
of considerations)
besides, the C compiler and libraries (and also linker scripts) have

GCC Ada for Linux/MIPS/BE and Linux/HPPA2

hi
is there any chance someone has a working gcc-ada compiler? for
- Linux/MIPS (big endian, MIPS3, MIPS4 or MIPS32)
- Linux/HPPA2

I have successfully compiled gcc-ada for SGI_IRIX (MIPS4/BE)
but ... every attempt to create a cross-compiler(1) fails

on HPPA I have never seen an Ada compiler

XpressWare v8.1 or above (software for Tektronix X11 terminals)

2018-07-02 Thread Carlo Pisani via cctalk
hi,
In 1990s Tektronix produced digital video X terminal and introduced
X server software based on VxWorks v5 (Windriver). Later they
introduced a new line of terminals, at some point a company called NCD
bought the Tektronix X11-terminals division and started to produce
their own line, called NCD-terminals with a software called
"NCD-bridge"

Anyway, both the 200-series and the 400-series of the Tektronix X11
terminals boot from a directory on a server via NFS or TFTP, either
way, you need to create a directory for the terminal to boot from, and
install a number of files.

These files are provided as "Tektronix XpressWare version 8.0 (or
later)". The 200-series can bootstrap from v7 ( one of the member of
my team owns an original CD), but the 200-series needs the v8 or later
(we don't have).

Unofficially, you might look for NCD, the Company who bought the
X-terminals division from Tektronix; they had (note the past tense)
some software in the form of patches, accessible by anonymous ftp.
There aren't any complete releases, but there were archives which
contains much that is useful to be found in the ftp, in particular
patches containing bits of version 8.1 of XpressWare; enough to form
the basis of a working installation.

Unfortunately, the archive is gone, no more available.

Let me know if you have the software or if you know where/how to find
it, otherwise, X11-terminals like X400 can't be functional.

Thanks

C3253A HP Envizex P-Series

2018-06-23 Thread Carlo Pisani via cctalk
(x11 terminal) C3253A HP Envizex P-Series

Up for sale is a X-Terminal made by Hewlett Packard in 1995.

Tested, in perfect working conditions!!!

cpu: i960 @ 33Mhz (it's the fastest available on Envizex v1)
ram: 48MB (builtin + 16+16+8, the first two sims need to be equal)
rom: none (sorry, It doesn't have any font-rom, it loads fonts from tftp/NFS)
vram: 2MB
lan: 10Mbps BASET RJ45 (it also comes with an AUI port on the back)
kb/mouse: common PS/2 (F12 is a special key, but Envizex works on
common keyboards, HIL keyboards are also supported)
Media: floppy 3.5",1.44MB
Software included!

It comes with all the documentation, configuration-scripts, and
startup for Linux (sorry, I don't have HPUXv10.20/v11, I can't
test/adapt scrips).

The machine is perfectly working, it supports the X Display Manager
Control Protocol (XDMCP), you just need to power on your hardwired
terminal and be greeted with a login prompt. This purpose is easy to
be accomplished on HP terminals, especially if you use NFS instead of
tftpboot.

HP-net-stations can boot using either Network File System or Trivial
FTP, with NFS being the preferred method it's simpler.

During the final phase of startup, the bootup screen disappears and
the X station loads bin/modules.ld, which tells what can be optionally
loaded (but not executed), and then starts the X session by executing
the application that was specified by the user on config/autoexec.cfg

It supports all of the following:

XDM login
VUE
CDE Lite (its panel appears similar to the one you can see on HPUX)
mwm (simple windows manager)
twm (simple windows manager)

If you see one of first three login screens in the above list, you
just need to enter your login account and password.

80 euro + s/h

Tektronix terminals, Tekxpress v8?

2018-06-20 Thread Carlo Pisani via cctalk
hi
I have a Tek XP400, and a Tek XP217. They are X11-terminals made in
1990s (thus unable to support GTK-v2)

anyway, the XP217 runs with TekXpress v7, I have a copy for my
tftp-boot server and the terminal is happy with it; whereas the XP400
says it needs a more recent software.

does anyone happen to have TekXpress v8, or NCD bridge v4?

M68020-PGA to M68EC020-PGA

2018-06-02 Thread Carlo Pisani via cctalk
hi
I am playing with an old Motorola board and I have a problem

As you well know, the 68020 is a 32-bit microprocessor from Motorola,
released in 1984. Motorola also manufactured MC68EC020 - embedded
version of the MC68020 CPU, housed in different packages than the
Motorola 68020 microprocessor, but even in the case of PGA package of
114-pin PGA, MC68020/PGA is not pin-to-pin compatible with
M68EC020/PGA

They both use 114-pin PGA package, but some pins are different, (Vcc
and gnd are placed differenly in the pinout), and you need an adapter!

My board's socket is designed for M68EC020, but I need to use a M68020
chip because only the goldcap version, i.e. MC68020RC33 114-pin
ceramic PGA, is available at 33Mhz.

Code: Select allCPU: MC68020 114-pin PGA [adapter] ---> socket:
MC68EC020 114-pin PGA

Do you happen to know *where* I can find an adaptor M68020-PGA to M68EC020 PGA?
Do you happen to have for sale?

here I am
Thanks!
