I’m actually surprised that it took this long before the “sharks” started to
circle our historical objects looking for things like asbestos, arsenic, radium
and other “poisons” used in the making these machines.

Re: Living Computer Museum

2020-05-28 Thread corey cohen via cctalk
I manage the finance for the VCF Museum and our shows, which means I also deal
with our “artifact loans”. It is a lot of paperwork. Only “special” items
are worth the hassle.

As for museums closing… Its tough when you can’t have visitors who help pay for
the day to day operational costs with the admission price and many of those
visitors become potential sponsors.

For us at VCF, this isn’t so bad because we don’t take any regular admission
money from InfoAge (our parent museum) and are exclusively volunteers which
allows us to have a much lower overhead than traditional museums like LCM. VCF
is also an independent 501c3 charity which means there is a lot of help out
there to keep our doors open and we also planned for rainy days. I can tell
you that we had big plans for our shows this year, but so far two of those
shows (including one at LCM) had to be moved to virtual thanks to Covid-19 so
we are now in rainy day territory, but we actually planned for a monsoon, so we
will be fine.

Museums like LCM that aren’t quite a fully independent 501c3 charity yet (I
think they had plans for this before Covid) will have trouble as their parent
corporations look to save money. Hopefully LCM can make the transition and
spread their support base out to the public, who I think are very appreciative
of their mission.

Cheers,
Corey

Re: Nuke Redmond!

2019-10-07 Thread corey cohen via cctalk
Ok the original topic.

I think what screwed the guy selling the 25 cent computer disks is that
Microsoft, according to the article ,sells $25 replacement restore disks. So
technically he is counterfeiting a current Microsoft product, the physical
restore disk they sell. The whole argument that there were original disks
provided with the system or the software can be downloaded for free is
meaningless to the actual case. Not saying I agree with the law they got him
on as there should be some exceptions but facts are the facts. Btw. This was
the first version of the story I read that mentioned that Microsoft sold
replacement restore disks to computer refurbish shops themselves.

To put this in another way. You are allowed to make a personal backup your
own stuff. So for example I own a DVD of raiders of the lost ark, I’m allowed
to make a backup for myself. If I didn’t make a backup or lost the disk but
had the packaging/case, you can order replacement disks by contacting paramount
by providing your original packaging or damaged DVD. I have done this in the
past.

Now if I made a copy of Raiders for someone else or copied it off a free TV
transmission and sold DVDs of that, it would be a crime since there still is a
way to buy a replacement DVD or watch/DVR it on free TV when it happens to be
on.

Corey

Re: Photos from VCF West 2019

2019-08-06 Thread corey cohen via cctalk
That must have been photos from Saturday morning, by Saturday afternoon we had
to rearrange the Apple-1 cases because we had 14 at the show at once with a
minimum of 2 continually running and we were working on repairing some on the
table behind the one with Marco Boglione’s Apple-1 playing music. We got 4
more running and 1 we started but didn’t finish because we ran out of time.
We even had a few show up on Sunday that didn’t RSVP they were coming, so 17
unique Apple-1 computers, not counting the one in the CHM collection ,were on
the floor at one time or another over the weekend. It was so crazy I never
even powered mine up, though mine is usually shown running at VCF east so no
excitement having it run.

You also missed getting a picture of the AGC opened up. The guys who did the
restoration of operational one on Sunday opened up the AGC so you could see the
modules inside.

Re: Lots of Apple 1 computers @ VCF West

2019-07-08 Thread corey cohen via cctalk
The high price isn’t a Steve Jobs distortion field. The Apple-1 was
collectible in the 1980’s before Jobs became the one we all remember. The
Apple-1 was really the 1st collectible personal computer and it was produced in
very limited numbers for a very short time and was tied the grandparent to the
Apple II and all other Apple products.

As for the replicas being more reliable, only if they are built using modern
sockets with modern caps and TTL chips where possible. The original boards
still differ a lot from the replicas because the techniques used to make the
PCB boards are no longer used or legal due to environmental laws and the dying
art of how they made PCBs in the 70’s.

As for why a replica can cost so much, look at the prices for some of the items
on the Apple-1 like the ceramic 6502, the shift registers or RAM. They aren’t
expensive because they are on an Apple-1, but there are people who collect
those vintage chips also.

The documentation was confusing as I expected it to be clearer that they could

fine. FYI. I am using an XProfile emulating the widget but don’t want to keep
swapping CF cards or changing switches to select different “Stars”.
