Directory of old computer collectors

2017-05-22 Thread steven stengel via cctalk
Hi,
In the past, I requested the email address and home city of old computer
collectors to a compile a list for my own purposes.
Over 120 people had responded, which is great! Now I want to make this list
PUBLIC with a Google map showing everyones location, email, and collecting
preferences.
Since I don't have anyone's explicit permission to publish their information, I
am now asking.
Please let me know if I may, or may not, place your information on the public
webpage.
Thanks-
Steven Stengelhttp://oldcomputers.net/

Regrading the previous message, the map would just show the city, not your
actually home address, which I do not have, but to be honest, anyone could find
it using the internet.

Regarding the previous message, all email will be obfuscated to foil scrapers.

I will post anything you want me to, just tell me.
email is not necessary, a link or website will do fine as well. The map is
intended to be a method to see who's where for assistance, trading, meet-ups,
etc. There's hundreds of people here, but few know where each other live, I
suppose.

You do get that this isn't cctalk, but one that people had already sent
contact info for.  I sent him revised publishable contact info for the
list.  I realize he probably made the request w/o 40 pages of consent
forms to read, but he seems to just be asking to allow him to publish
from that list, and a note here for anyone who didn't see it in their
email, since the respondents came from here.

thanks
jim

I want to format and use the floppy drives - I have the S-100 expansion and

I’ll make copies and return your disk if you have one.

Thanks-

Anyone live near Walnut Creek, CA?

2019-06-03 Thread steven stengel via cctalk
There's a weird Sord M23P (I think) from the early 80's at this elderly persons
house in Walnut Creek, CA - East of the bay.
She can't pack and ship it - it's too big and heavy. It was actually sent to
her by mistake, it was supposed to be sent to my house, 500 miles away.
It's nothing rare or valuable - you can actually have it if you go and pick it
up - I really just want it out of her house.
Let me know!
Steve

Shipping from Europe to USA

2019-08-22 Thread Steven Stengel via cctalk
How do I ship a 50 pound computer from Europe to the United States? Who has
good rates?
Thanks-
Steve

Update: Shipping 50 lb computer from Zell am See, Austria to CA.

2019-08-23 Thread steven stengel via cctalk
Well, I knew the computer, just not the city.

It's Zell am See, a small town in western Autria, far from everywhere it seems.

The computer is a Datapoint 2200 - 50lbs, 10x19x20 inches.

I want to get it shipped to Calfornia, where I live.

The cheapest option is to just use local Austria mail, but max dimensions are
60x60x100cm, or
23.5x23.5x40 inches. That would leave just 2-inches on each of two sides for
padding.

Best option - remove the plastic cover and mail it separately. Correct me if
I'm wrong, but the entire bottom of the computer seems to be a solid piece of
metal, like the Apple III = very strudy. The back is a giant metal heat sink.

I think it's do-able, do you?

Steve.

Update: Received my 50lb Datapoint 2200 computer from Austria via regular post.

2019-09-23 Thread steven stengel via cctalk
Found a Datapoint 2200 in Austria that I wanted - I asked seller Viktor to pack
it well, by wrapping it several times in big-bubble bubbewrap, until it was
just a giant cube of bubble wrap.

See pics here:
http://oldcomputers.net/box/

The cover was actually sent separately in another box so it didn't crushed by
the 50 pound system.

First, I have to rewire it from 220vac to 110vac.
Second - what to do about that screen?

2019-09-27 Thread steven stengel via cctalk

Sorry for top-post - it’s the yahoo app. So the purpose of the extra screen
layer is to prevent crt implosion?
How did you remove it?
It’s safe to remove it, as long as I don’t hit the screen with a hammer?
Thanks-Steve.

Lucky you, I would have driven over if had known about it ! Only a one-day
return trip for me

Be carefully : some parts on the big cooling block are directly connected to
mains.

> Second - what to do about that screen?

Repair / clean it of course. This is what I did to my DP1100 :

Before : ftp://ftp.dreesen.ch/Datapoint/Pictures/Console/CPU_before.jpg

During :
ftp://ftp.dreesen.ch/Datapoint/Pictures/Console/Pull_off_remaining_goo.jpg

Result  : ftp://ftp.dreesen.ch/Datapoint/Pictures/Console/CPU_after.jpg

.. and the full machine, in its orginal Datapoint desk :

Old Mac IICX to give away in Los Angeles/Orange County.

2021-05-24 Thread Steven Stengel via cctalk
Free Macintosh IICX in Orange County CA area. Sometimes it boots, often it
doesn’t (power supply issue?). Also HD has stiction issues. Also the tall
profile monitor has a very smeary image. Other than that, it’s great!
Everything is included - computer with cover, keyboard, mouse, monitor.

[cctalk] You have Apple Lisa 1 "twiggy" system to trade for my IBM 5100 Portable PC?

This seems like a good place to ask this question - I'd like an Apple Lisa 1
"twiggy" system for my collection, and can trade a working IBM 5100 Portable
PC. We'd probably have to meet in person to make the transaction. I'm in So CA.

[cctalk] Wanted: Apple III 5MB Profile HD driver file

2023-02-15 Thread steven stengel via cctalk
The title says it all - the Apple III has an external hard drive called the
Profile, but a driver has to be installed on the boot floppy - it won’t boot
from the HD. There were also 10MB Profiles, with a different driver file I’m
guessing.

I have the driver file for the 10MB, but it doesn't seem to work with my 5MB
drive. Please help if you can.
Thanks-
Steve.

[cctalk] Re: Wanted: Apple III 5MB Profile HD driver file

2023-02-15 Thread Steven Stengel via cctalk
Thanks Bill,
I actually got it working. All of the driver floppy disks had 10MB written in
them in pen, but they worked ok with the 5MB Profile. I also had to try a
different I/O card to get it working.
