Robert,
If you have a thinet/cheaper connection via say a hub with thin-net and
10BaseT to your network that's just fine. The AUI port won't go any faster. 
If you don't then I have one of these on my VAX3100

(well I am pretty sure its one of those. I am in Spain at present and can't
check) which just goes straight into a normal switch/hub..

That's great!!, I'll get back to you directly.

I do have both SimH and Charon running but before I can think about
netbooting I will have to find a way to connect the 3100 to the network!
Thinnet only ATM as I don't know how to connect to the AUI yet.

Strictly though you may not need to use a physical drive. The way I do it
these days is to net boot off a SIMH machine.
